I loved watching this man on Saturdays when I was growing up in the '70's. He was so talented, so funny, and he talked EXACTLY like my German grandmother.
"i shave my wife's back with a rusty tuna can! sheets of skin fall off like papyrus that i sign my divorce settlement on!!" This guy isn't nearly as psychotic as Patton Oswald make him out to be, i still wouldn't want to meet him in person tho..
We need more people like Bill Alexander. There was nothing phony about him. Those who came after him always put me to sleep. He was BY FAR the best ever on the tube.
I miss this guy.....he was ALWAYS so positive and could laugh at himself. I think his early life as a prisoner by the Nazis really shaped his mindset. I think that's why he talks about power so much .."the power is in your hands.." not someone else's...his basic teaching was:do what makes you happy and do not let anyone stop yo from happiness...whatever makes you that way.."
He wasn't a prisoner of the Nazis. He was from East Prussia, was drafted into the German army as a young man and eventually wound up as a POW of the Americans. After the war he moved to Canada.
Thanks for posting my great friend and mentor Bill Alexander.I have a lot of his shows. If you go to my tv series in here under my name you can contact me through my website. I actually have a video of Bill on the Johnny Carson show..Alexander Certified Instructor.
Bill wasn't always so hyper on some episodes though, especially back in the mid 80's when he would do still-life paintings instead of the usual landscape scenes, IIRC Alexander would always be so calm when he did those and by 1991 or so, Alexander's age caught up to him and he became more mellower.
Although by 1988, when Alexander's show transferred production from SoCal to Oregon, he went to doing landscape paintings only.
LOL, I can imagine he would say something exactly like that! I never saw him though, but I loved watching Bob Ross do his thing when I was a kid. He was really cool.
An true classic! Who could forget Bill's catchphrases such as "Fire it in there!!!!!" or the famous "MIGHTY BRUSH!" or "You have to have dark in order to have light!"
I kinda forgot he used to sing "Everything's Going my Way!" or some variation of it on many of his episodes.
This is Bill at his best, although around 1991 or so as he got up there in age, he wasn't as fun to watch.
The episode is from the 1989-90 series he did along side protege Lowell Speers

Bill Alexander > Bob Ross
While I watched both of them growing up, I've came to realize Bill is 10x better than Bob.
Bill, on some of his episodes painted stuff like still lifes, florals and buildings in more detail.

Man, this guy has PASSION for painting! It's funny that this guy is Bob Ross' mentor because Bob Ross is so mellow.
They should have based the shows on similar names and called this one "The Passion of Painting".

In 1991 he would have been about 75 years old. It's great that was still painting at that age.
