  • Gangstarr – "Check The Technique"

I was seriously just about to crazy trying to think of who sampled this!

  • I need this song on sheet music for an entire band, cant find it anywhere, any ideas???

  • @annaburge try learning it by ear ??

  • A better chart than it has the right to be, thanks to Mr. Wilson. Listen closely for the French horn lines.

  • Love this album. Saw Gerald Wilson and His Orchestra at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach back in 1968. Brings back a lot of good memories, Jazz at that time was HOT, saw lots of acts at the Lighthouse at that time. Chico Hamilton, Gabor Szabo, Bobby Hutcherson to name a few. Could you play the song titled "Down Here On The Ground" was on this album as well. Thanks.

  • Kuntye West is a part of the problem either way you put it.

  • Hip hop this...hip hop that...whatever man...does anyone realize that gerald wilson is a piece of our musical heritage ? Composer, arranger, trumpeteer playing with the greats like Benny Carter, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. He wrote arrangements for Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Julie London, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Carter, Lionel Hampton, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Nancy Wilson, and others. He's still alive @ 92 ! Hail brother Wilson !!!!

  • @btinsley1 I would not know about this heritage if it weren't for my favorite producers keeping this alive. The radio certainly doesn't and I'm not blessed with omniscience. Just saying.

  • @bobbygnosis: Yes, I understand that because of your point of reference. But do you understand my position that our once-rich musical heritage is no longer original? Hardly anyone sings, plays an instrument, nor has the skill to write lyrics that aren't vulgar, degrading, or condoning violence. I'm not saying hip hop is totally a bad thing, of course not, but today's rap is on the sinister side and "piggybacking" samples and beats for both leads to our collective dumbing-down....just sayin

  • @btinsley1 I both agree and disagree. Everything is derivative in art. Soul is a branch of jazz is a branch of big band is a branch of orchestral is a branch of chamber and so on. As new technologies are introduced new variations on how to make and organize sounds arise. Truth be told the early 60's is my favorite period of jazz and there is nothing like it these days. I agree with you that the quality of music does seem to have degraded slightly.

But there are still diamonds in the rough.

  • @bobbygnosis: That's an accurate analogy of there being "diamonds in the rough".Problem is, there are too many of them. Whatever happened to turning on the radio & hearing a "highly polished diamond". Sorry for the mixed methaphor, but the message is clear: We have departed the commonplace notion of fine instrumentation, songwriting & unmolested singing (no electronics to hide incompetence/inability). At the rate we're going, we'll be reduced to moans and grunts in 25 years....and it'll sell

  • @btinsley1 I think you're right. But there have always been hacks. As long as there are humans there will be hacks. I've found that there is some good music being made / produced if you can find it. I'm lucky to have a friend who actively searches for good music so I'm exposed to both old and new music that is good. This is pure luck on my part; there is some good music being made. And yes, that friend is a DJ. And no he does not listen to the radio.

Take heart. There is goodness if you look.

  • @bobbygnosis: That's my whole problem with our musical state of affairs, one has to LOOK for it. True, there have always been hacks, but not as prevalent in the last 30 years.Hacks are a part of the accepted musical experience. that should have never started, but the kids didn't know any better & took to heart the mansions, hoes, guns, cars and bling, all the while the tub of the musical black experience was steadily being drained. I know...I saw it gradually take place. image over substance

  • @btinsley1 I must admit - I blame consumerism. The only music I find of any interest was not made, designed or built for sale. It was written by someone who just liked a cool tune. The last couple decades has been very rough not only on music, but on art in general. However, this is a two-way street. You have to look much harder to find the good stuff - and when you do it's sheer bliss.

Don't let Jay-Z get you down. He'll be Flock o' Seagulls in no time.

Good music is like a gem. Cherish it.

  • @bobbygnosis my thoughts exactly. 100% correct

  • Gooooooood music is so hard to come by ! great tune 'man'

  • I'm actually here because of hip hop.

But no, really, this song is super rad. I've had this going through my head for years, but I never knew the song or the band playing so it was always a question-mark in my head. Someone was nice enough to identify the song name for me and now I get to listen to this till my ears bleed.

    Cheers to good music!

  • pete rock is a legend

  • I saw him several times at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, CA. One time I was making a sales call on a customer in LA that happened to be across from an elementary school. As I walked down the sidewalk I passed a Thunderbird parked at the curb and it was Gerald Wilson in the driver's seat. I stopped and said "do you know you look just like Gerald Wilson?" He laughed and I had a long chat with him until his daughter came and got in the car. Very nice gentleman and a real thrill for me.

  • This is so great! I have the album, but my old turntable is shot. I was only dreaming when I searched it and there it is. Fabulous stilll after all these years

  • ♥ ♥

  • A straightforward yet great chart. The album cover also strikes me----captures the optimism of a young Gerald Wilson, his band, the California feel, and the times. Very very nice.

  • Amazing track
