I did some checking and found out that these guys who want to do the space jump have been working on the idea for 7 years but keep chickening out... They want to use a gas ballon gondola to get to 130 thousand feet and get out but have not figured out the suit that will work yet.
"How on Earth do you avoid missing the Earth from there?"
You don't miss. You can't avoid hitting it other than slowing down before impact. Hence the parachute, but if you burn up on the way in the parachute is of little value.
"You can't avoid hitting it other than slowing down before impact."
Bingo! Out of the mouths of babes. Go read up on simple orbital mechanics, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy while you're at it. You appear to be culturally deprived.
Obviously not as famous of joke as you wish it to be.
You would be surprised at how many folks think that you can actually miss the earth from 130,000 feet.
My only negativity on this project is in our current technolgy. At least in the non-military free market. We don't have the technology for the suit yet. Plain and simple.
"Obviously not as famous of joke as you wish it to be."
Radio show turned into best seller books turned into TV show turned into Hollywood movie. It's quite well known, especially to Sci-Fi fans; although I can't honestly say I "wish" anything of it.
I do the same but as you can not release the bleeders I keep them and eat em... Most catch and release types release all fish caught and most of those die. Not fare. I grew up in a foster home with a game warden for a father. I have witnessed this action hundreds and hundreds of times. Countless really.
I grew up fishing with the Catskill fathers of catch and release. You'll find their books on your library's shelf, or maybe your own.
Artificial flies, every barb and point dressed with my own hands, I can't remember the last time I had anything but a clean, shallow lip hook. I know about lactic buildup and shock.
I don't just haul 'em and chuck 'em like the boat and Bud crowd.
An orbit, however, is, -by definition-, throwing yourself at the ground and missing, because of your tangential velocity.
This will be the problem with their plan to jump from orbit. Before imApact they will need to slow down, because if they don't they will overshoot the Earth; and miss it.
Amusing as always. Since you often do that thing with the pistols and onomatopoeia you should take up shooting if you don't already do. It's a blast (no pun intended)
Google "Highest Skydive" for all the details of past sydiving jumps from space. In my opinion the first test dummy will melt on re-entry if no gondola is used.
I meant to say gondola, not gongola... In the above video response I am the guy on the left in the light blue jumpsuit. Just so you know that I know what I'm talking about.
Skydiving in space LOL... Now I've heard everything. Actually it has already been done. From a gongola beheath a gas balloon. The only way to keep from burning up on re-entry is to stay in the gondola, cut the gondola away from the balloon then wait till you re-enter to get out of that.
Wow. Space diving... Maybe somebody didn't understand the physics of the shuttle tiles very well? Even if you stayed in one peice it would be a single burnt husk peice.
I'd watch it on ESPN 2 though... right up there with syncronized swimming with sharks...
OMG OMG OMG! Where did that horrid poster at :30 come from? Was it those eeevool people at move on dot org? ; ) It sure is an eye opener, that much is certain. "Let's feast on babies together." Holeee crap!
Already been skydiving... from 14,000 feet. It was awesome. I'm a bit of a space nerd, growing up in the Aerospace industry... so why not? i'd just out of a perfectly good space ship.
They need to re-introduce that bill on January 19, 2009

This is very Important for you to know.
70% of the prison population are former foster care kids... Make the Child protective System look like it needs an over haul...Look at top videos:
Search: Youtube: ( Foster Care Funding ) then ( CPS Corruption ) then ( drugging children ) then ( Conspiracy of silence )

What if they throw themselves at the ground - and miss?
IsaacBickerstaffEsq 4 years ago
"and miss?"
Gravity won't allow that. It's the law ya know...
mobiltec 4 years ago
Well, I guess I'd better build a satelitte shield on my roof to protect me until the Earth plunges into the Sun then.
Although that idea would certainly eliminate one of the key problems with their long range plans, i.e.:
How on Earth do you avoid missing the Earth from there?

Are you talking to me? Cuz if you are, you are out of your league...

Yes I am. No I'm not.

OK... Tell me where I am deprived of culture and what the heck does culture have to do with the laws of gravity and orbital mechanics?
mobiltec 4 years ago
You took my initial post seriously. It is a famous quote from a humorous social satire work disguised as science fiction.
I short, it is a joke.
Q: How do you fly?
A: Throw yourself at the ground and miss

Perhaps it's not quite as well known as "42."

I teach freshman physics. You might be surprised how much it takes to surprise me these days. Standards are slipping.

Now there's a funny picture. One which I have seen many times unfortunately. I'll be getting some fishing videos up shortly I hope.

You play with gravity your way, I play with it mine.
Other than that we appear to be rather similar. Although I fish catch and release and prefer Old Timey to Bluegrass.

I think you should extend the Shout-Out segment of your show. Maybe make a whole 'nother video each day of Shout-Outs. Call it 'After Oprah.'
