  • @fungirlslim

    Hi

How can you play guitar with your thumb?

By listening and watching Wes Montgomery perhaps?

    :-) Bob

  • Thanks for posting! Saw them in Cork in 1991.

  • Anyone else remember Andy Mackintosh's Lipslide perform this in the Goat House pub, South Norwood, mid 80's?

  • @StixH I remember hearing them on Night Owls years ago. Is he still playing?

  • Thanks so much for posting this.

I have to say I preferred Dick on a more straight- ahead Jazz gig, but it's lovely to see him again.

I miss being able to see him again more than I can say.

  • Wonderful

  • Class track written by Alan Gorrie of AWB

  • Thats a phenomenal bit of music, diabolical dress sense and the poor drummer gets no footage despite a nice groove. Amazing to hear such a sound coming from an unlikely looking combo. I bought the album when it came out just for this track, and its brilliant even now.

  • Thanks for this footage Bob!!

  • Groovy

  • I played this in a jazz/funk band I was in in the early 80s. the guitar player wrote out the parts. But I never heard the original version before. (a) It's brilliant and (b) I reckon we made a pretty good fist of it!

  • Brings stuff back to me too - I used to see Dick at the The Bull (Barnes) nearly every Sunday lunchtime while I was growing up - my dad was a jazzer . I'm nearly an oap now and he's still my starting point when I listen to a sax.

  • When was that mate? I used to go there and also when he used to play at the Half Moon up the road in putney. Tuesday nights if I recall. It was late 70's / early 80's when I used to go.. Happy memories. Where you around at the time when he had Tessa Niles signing with them? That was awesome!

  • Aah memories!! I used to do some sound work at various gigs like the Half Moon in Putney for the band Paz (which would often feature both Dick & Jim, also percussionist Chris Fletcher and Neil Wilkinson on drums). Great stuff, and god bless ya Dick Morrisey - and Dick Crouch of Paz.

  • OMG this really brings back some great memories.

Jim is playing on my album 'Waiting on you' .

Dick Morrisey my guru! RIP - Mike Parlett

  • Keep coming back to this. Amazing stuff from exceptional talent.

  • I of course agree with what has been said about Morrissey-Mullen, but I loved him blowing straight ahead Jazz.

He was always soulful and used to swing like crazy.

    Loved him, and miss him.

  • I recently found clips of Dick and Jim. Dick being a lifelong friend to the family, in later years when we met up again, the little girl who once sat on his knee was now selling his tapes and LP's at the gigs with her Father Divs, (nickname) for some 4 years. Always down the Half moon putney, best nights of my life and have NEVER got anywhere near to anything else in the past. Now live in the States Too many happy and sad memories. Miss Jim and Dick especially. Thanks for posting.

  • Brilliant. The bass player on this clip is Robin Clayton, with whom I have recently had the pleasure of playing. It's taken from an Oscar Peterson-hosted programme shot in Edinburgh. Robin told me that he was pleased to get the gig - they flew him up to Scotland and back to London for the session. He assumed all footage was lost and was surprised when I gave him a grainy old copy on DVD. Apparently his kids rip the p*ss out of him mercilessly as he is not quite as svelte as he used to be!

  • hey thanks for posting this - great to see Jim back in the day!

  • argh brings back so many memories tuesday nights half moon Putney .wish i could go back . one of the best bands live ever .. imho also seen them at burford bridge hotel dorking and white hart ripley ...... fantastic Dick is missed Jim is great and john critichson is the best... a big fan

  • That album 'Life on The Wire' was excellent. Tony Beard's drumming on the studio version of Brazil Nut was amazing. Saw him play with MM, Critch, McKenzie, Kenyon and Chris Fletcher. That was the best version but there were lots of other great musos who did their apprenticeship with Jim and Dick. Neal Wilkinson was another great drummer.

  • Saw Noel sing the most amazing version of "I can't let go". Does anyone know if it was ever recorded? Would love to get a copy.

  • Recall seeing Jim first with "Kokomo" at Chalk Farm Roundhouse (1975 i think) Unique guitarist..alot like a fast version of Eric Gale. Morrissey/Mullens version of "Dreams So Real" (by Carla Bley) was absolutely wonderful. Shame it isn't available on CD. Thanks for this superb film!

  • Just found this post so not sure if you can still get the CD but a compilation was released a couple of years ago called 'Everything Must Change' includes 'song for carla' and 'dreams so real'....hope you can find it....

  • @sjmorrissey Many thanks! I shall search for it. I still have the vinyl but no record player. Are you related to Dick Morrissey? (excuse me for asking)

  • Great to see Dick immortalised on film. The most underrated sax player who deserves so much more recognition than he received. Some of the best gigs I've witnessed - and I've seen most of the greats. Jim's also a genius in my eyes.

  • An evening spent watching Morrissey Mullen was always extra special. Gigs at the Half Moon Putney, Bull & Gate Kentish Town and others are fondly remembered. John Critchenson was often on keys and I remember Tony Beard on drums plus John McKenzie on bass from the Life On The Wire period (the last 2 are not on this vid), and of course the great Carol Kenyon on vocals. I have recently put together a jazz/funk band with definite MM feel in mind. Thanks to MM for some great music. RIP Dick.

  • Sorry thought 1st post hadnt gone on

  • Hi great post. I remember seeing noel singing with them in the pub behind the oval brilliant. Ha Ha Flicks I remember that place!! Am I completely wrong or did I see them play at the Avenue in Gillingham?

  • Hi

really enjoyed 1985/6 period saw them with noel in pub behind the oval excellent!!Ha Ha Flicks remember that place!! Am I dreaming or did I ever see them play at the avenue in Gillingham Kent&?

    Great video post

  • If I remember rightly, flicks burnt down the very night the band played ? Some showstopper !

half monn in Putney were the best gigs...RIP Dick.

  • M/M top band. For a couple of IF vids do a search on 'forgotten roads'. Incredible Terry Smith solo.

My thoughts on the UK media are unprintable.

  • Go on... try. You'll feel better. I print mine all the time. You'd be amazed how many people will say they totally agree with you

    Bob

  • Thanks, Bob. Now stop time-wasting and post some more Dick videos!

    Regards, Del.

  • Hey Del

Sorry - I've posted all the material I've got :(

    Bob

  • Memories. FLICKS at Dartford!

  • Thanks Bobjazz .

That brought back some great great memories .

  • I remember going to a concert in 1971 to see "If". I was with my first real "love" and they played sunday sad. I bought an album at the venue and have admired Dicks work throughout his career. last time i saw him was in a north wales jazz club withjim mullen in about 1988. A wonderful man who had time to speak with his fans. My obsession with jazz/rock/funk is entirely his fault. a sad loss to the music world

  • Totally agree. I saw a 3 line ad in the MM noting the words 'Morrisey', 'electronic', 'rock'. At the time I was a Tang Dream fan - the nearest to what I wanted to do. Saw the band at the Torrington pub in Finchley. We were knocked out. Like standing in the middle of a whirlwind! The complex arrangements and soloing were incredible. Followed them whenever possible. Definitely the world's best jazz rock band. Blows the *rse off the Yanks. Crime of the century the pr*ts in the meediahh ignored IF.

  • Thanks Bobjazz...They were a great band. R.I.P. Dick

  • brilliant.
