The US Armed Forces, the world's largest gas consumer. The cost of that gas transferred during this video is more than the average American will make in his lifetime.
@shooteraod Well, it holds just over 51,000 gallons, at a rate of about 700 gallons per minute. Not a fast process my friend....I was on a C-5 from Anchorage to Kadena, and we in-flight refueled. Quite an amazing experience.
@SgtWitt Wow...thanks for the info. So what you are saying is that the C-5 takes on roughfully 331,500 pounds of fuel and burns 4550 per minute...or is it per hour? If it is per minute, then it has enough fuel to stay in the air about 72 minutes...per hour, it can stay up for 7.2 hours using the rate of fuel (jet A) weighs 6.5 pounds per gallon with is basically the same as oil. No offense, but I think you meant to say that the C-5 burns 700 gallons (4550 pounds) per hour.
@shooteraod What I was stating, was that the tanker was pumping fuel into it at a rate of about 700 gallons per minute, since you asked how long it would take. The C-5 can hold about 330,000 pounds of fuel, yes..HOWEVER, in my years in the Air Force, I have only seen a C-5 fully fueled only 1 time. A C-5 can stay in flight for about 12-14 hours, depending on its cargo load, and other variables. They are not topped off very regularly.
@SgtWitt ohhhhh...my bad...sorry. You are transferring gast to the C-5 at 700 gallons per minute. I misunderstood what you said...went and read it again and then...the lights came on...sorry. Still...thats pretty cool. I would give almost anything to be up there when you guys were refuelling to watch...or get in the way. Thanks for serving and doing your part. If you ever get to Fort Worth...let me know and I will buy dinner.
@shooteraod It was definitely something to always remember. It was also pretty neat cruising at 44,000 feet. I'm reserves now, but seriously considering going active again. You live in Fort Worth? I live in Tyler.
@SgtWitt Awww...cool beans...we are neighbors..lolol. Do a GOOGLE search using the name "MotorsbyShooter" and you can email me from there. All my other info is on my web site. I cant tell you how many times I have flown into Pounds Field. Years ago, we use to go there just for "the" hamburger...something like 12 inches big...one burger would feed 4 people. I am also 6 miles out almost on the runway centerline for NAS (Carlswell) air base. They fly over my house daily and I love it.
@kalahiki808 The c-5 may be ugly, but it more than does the job. Nothing else outside of the AN-225 hauls more cargo, and the USAF have over 100 of them compared to just 1 An-225 and that's mostly for civilian cargo.
The hard part with large aircraft is the bowwave, you have to strong arm the boom at least on the KC-135. I refueled a C-5 for an hour doing practice hook ups it wore me out. That was in 1975 I retired in 80
@3ISAMAGICNUMBR, I'm just joking! I'm not that person who comes to here just to insult others! You should have showed some respect! I bet it irritated you so much! I’m really sorry I didn't mean it, and I can understand why you used a pencil sharpener as an example. It is nightmare when you find that a pencil can do its job! Don’t worry, I can help you to find a good doctor to help you do your job or you might use the refuel plan if you work on it to make her happy!
My dad flies C-17's, he makes air refueling look so damn easy. All slight movements of the stick, and watching the lights under the belly, he is an expert!
@AaronWallace Interesting. What year was that? About this video...I was going to say, "Where do we get such men?" My appologies to your aunt Cindy. Thank her for her service, for me. Where do we get such men and women?
I learned from the Miramar Air show that the KC-135 can pump out 12,000 gallons per hour. It can refuel one C-5, two B2 bombers or 16 fighter jets from one tank.

I think it's alittle bit of all that you mentioned. Think about the very thought of something the sheer size of a C-5, loaded with an Abrams tank, along with some other equipment, being able to conquer the very physics and be flyable.
What super-human powers would you enjoy? None? I think not. What if you could fly like an eagle? Or, perhaps you would prefer to just be a human. Wanting, aspiring to see more. Certainly, you might climb a mountain, but think about what you might feel soaring above the mountains not like a bird...but like a god!
I don't know how they could find a C-5 that was flyable long enough to be able to refuel.
Funny how you could always tell a C-5 mission: Oops, the mission has slipped back 2 hours, then it's slipped back 4 hours, next thing you know, the mission has been scrubbed because the C-5 is sitting at Ramstein broke down.
I wish they made all airplanes to be as relibale as the KC-135 has been.
Ummm, no I'm not. For the 30 days that we were in Turkey, we never plugged a singles C-5 that was supposed to be a receiver. C-17's were always 100% though. Go figure.
Well in all the time I spent on C-5's, there was my share of breakdowns and on-time flights....I would have to say the on-time flights out numbered the break downs....the thing I realized was once you got a C-5 out on a mission and moving, she flew great....its whenever there was an extended down time that things seemed to go wrong. Were you flying out of Incirlik?
Yep, spent my share of time at the lick. The C-5 is an outstanding airplane. It, like the C-141 has been a victim of politics.
The C-141 was ignored to have a reason to purchase the C-5, and the same happened with the C-5 to be able to purchase the C-17. I think it would have been cheaper for them to retool the assembly lines to start making more C-141's and C-5's with the updated avionics (I know they put glass cockpits into the C-5's, and even the C-141's) and re-engine the 141 with CFM-56's
I think they actually did a study that showed they could purchase a C-5 and a C-130 for the price of one C-17...oh well....it was a sad day when the 141 retired.....that was a workhorse!!!!
Actually, he's not exaggerating all that much. This was the only C-5 that got off the ground the entire week that we were TDY. Although, as they're transitioning to the Guard having the C-5s, they're meeting mission more and more here lately. We baby our planes in the Guard. Why do we enjoy flying and being in the sky? Is that the space, the feeling of freedom, the blue colour...etc. What are aeroplanes so attractive for us? Is the the speed, the shape, the power, the technology...etc.
