Johnny Flynn's new album has an interpretation of this song. Not a cover, mind you, just a personal response to the sometimes inaudible words of an old 78. It's also rather lovely, though I would recommend the solo version. Much more delicate.
nice. I recently undertook the exercise of trying to transcribe the words to this song. I also challenged my parents, who grew up in Alabama. There's some totally unintelligible stuff in there. After a couple of weeks with a few lines still not settled, I gave in and did the search, saw the thread from a couple years ago, it led me here. I enjoy your version. thanks.
Excellent version - made me think of doing a cover myself, but I don't think I'd get away with the line "Some say that John the baptist was nothing but a jew...".
we probably play it all wrong. I got to hold the 78 a little while ago & listen to it played on a victrola... a very physical experience. I totally forgot to listen with the part of my brain that figures shit out!
This is just a lovely cover.

Good work.

@HerTeaLeaves33 - thanks! Is Johnny Flynn really working from Taggart's recording? I'd like to hear it!

Sounds a bit too much like Eric Cartman...
