  • I like the part when Reggie played the bass.

  • Go head Reggie I hear you!!!

  • omg this ridiculous

  • 8 people mad that they not good as reggie young

  • @baudilus: Coltrane came up with the Giant Steps changes as a technical exercise. He didn't intend for this song to be artful in the first place, so I think that to push ones self to the limits with this particular song fulfills its original intent. While my comment does prove the point of your comment, I think that it's a bit tasteless of you to post an obviously negative comment on a video that so clearly demonstrates three artists deep devotion to their respective crafts.

  • Oh Lawd! unbelievable

  • Oh Lawd!

  • I'm ready to trash my bass after seeing this clip.

  • I hated it until 0:34.

  • alright.. so the song is called "giant steps" right??

to me it sounds more like HYPERACTIVE BABY steps!!!

not a hate comment. i think this is awesome!!!

  • eh....ok ..... I wish I could play half this way one day ....but I ain't black ....... I don't stand a damn chance! lol

  • did this really happen?

  • strange! cool!

  • Strange and off-putting. The only reason you could tell there was a structure was that all three were playing the same noise. Difficulty for difficulty's sake is not music, IMO. This wasn't musical at all.

  • Reggie you killed that bass. After watching this clip, I think that I will retire..

  • Cool.

  • ..cup of tea (darn enter key..)

  • not my

  • I'm now going to shed....for the next 10 hours...

    Good night!

  • Great music Reggie been grooving off your music for a long time.

  • Y'all know that's not how 'Coltrane' is spelled...

  • Musicians have high facilities, but I don't hear anyone playing the changes, or outlining them in their solo.

  • @drkey88 me either. ppl always tryna play over Giant Steps and dont even know what the song is about so they play a bunch of nothin over it. Giant Steps aint easy but it aint the definition of jazz. Coltrane has many other tunes way harder like 26-2

  • @drkey88 agreed

  • Comment removed

  • I dont mean to cast the first stone but

idont think anyone really outlined the changes on their solo. THey are amazing players though

  • UNREAL!!!! WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I need air!!!

  • You guys are ridiculous lol!

  • that was ridiculous....

  • are u freakin kidding me? THis is SICCCCCKKKKKKK.. OMGoodness..

  • omg the chords Reggie did at the end were amazing, the degree of difficulty is crazy

  • Great!

  • rubbish man crappy bass tone stiff as fuck!!!!! rated G for gawdawfull

  • @CMDJazzBass Ya just Mad you dont have the Smith sound...Lol!!!!!! God bless ya...

  • @CMDJazzBass just cause that tone isnt for you, dosent mean its not for someone else!

  • im so confused??? i cannt understand this music?? call me ignorant but please explain.

  • beautiful smith!

  • i know kyle scott where is he now wow.

  • i know kyle scott too...he is me lol and he is probably in the same place u last saw him lol

    but who is this

  • Gentlemen that was an execellent display of musicianship and great arrangement. We need more music and I will be part of the movement to play instruments not computers.

  • Hi Reggie,

What are the combination of woods your BT smith basses have?

  • Comment removed

  • and that's why you ain't on this clip!!!

  • why dont you post a reply then and show them how a bass is "supposed" to sound. IF not, then this clip CLEARLY speaks for itself and is awesome! Sounds like jealousy!!

  • it's not about the way it's "supposed" to sound. it's about how the individual wants there instrument to sound. i don't like the tone of the bass and thats my opinion. but i like the song and the way they have arranged it

  • I feel ya on that NOTE (LOL)!! There will ALWAYS be haters amongst us huh??? Yeah, why don't YOU post YOUR low/mellow sound "PattenDevin"??? So that others can determine whether your sound is great or disgusting?

  • cant afford the bass I have a schecter silletto studio bass in a 5 and a six string

  • is this even swinging?

  • yo, that was hot.

  • Love it.

Only improvement would be an MTD...

    But thats just my opinion

  • I purchased Gospel Park and it's worth it !!!!!

  • and, uh, art?

    duh.

The Last Supper? The Sistine Chapel? David, the Pieta, and a thousand other exapmles?

don't just discount religion entirely. It's a pretty significant cultural force, whether you're religious or not.

  • Dude it was a joke.

It's kind of dumb of you to take that statement literally.

  • if you dislike it soo much why do you keep on coming back!!! Boy people with nooooo life

  • Haha! i seriously didn't even remember what i said to begin with....

    and dislike what?... forget it...

  • the drummer was never behind and this was more than a jazz interpretation of Giant Steps this shows you what church musicians do every Sunday..take a song and add some "stank"!! It aint for every "trained" musician out there but its for me!!lol...I would love to see the negative critics on this video to prove ONE point of criticism with some proof other than a comment with no backing..A.K.A. HATIN' lol

  • OOOOHHHH BEAST!! baa

  • w/ the good comes the bad, unfortunately a name neva follows the bad lol.

at its best music should be fun, even w/ mistakes.

when we start to worry 2 much about who is rite, who is wrong, what is rite, & what is wrong...we cant really have fun w/ music.

in any case i had fun playing this & i admit i was the weakest link lol.

in any case, have fun listening and discussing

  • Reggie your gift is God anointed I wish just for a 1 hour lesson, I have cr5 ken smith bass, you can see me playing on youtube untc1, any pointers will be well appreciated.

  • Great technique, but the walking line is rhythmically imprecise, the drummer plays forward and the bass plays back...bad swing

  • @Bozorius Throughout the history of great music, jazz, funk etc, you get this effect of one guy laying back and the other playing on top of the beat. It creates a tension that is a creative choice. It takes a highly developed sense of *internalized time* to be able to do this and make it work. These guys make it work.

So your observation is incorrect. It's not "bad swing".

    It's *good music*.

  • @paulvienneau Yes, this is the beauty of music, everyone can have different feelings, that was my personal feeling and a criticism to the contemporary jazz attitude: too much

    technique and few inpiration

  • @Bozorius Very >ahem< original of you.

Self-styled critics have been making the same tired criticism of jazz music from the beginning.

  • Did Reggie play some for James Hall?

  • yeah he actually played on 5 albums for James Hall

  • very nice reggie , im a bassist in london and my dear friend colin who is a hare krishna devotee pointed me in your direction . great playing on this giant steps ... but i like the clips in the park more !!! thanks for the music , mike .

  • Hotness. Im so glad I came up on this clip. My only complaint..TOO SHORT! LOL God bless yall.

  • THATS SICK. I love this arrangement. All of you guys covered this song really well!

  • This is very sick. Good work guys.

  • WOW!!!!!! Diggin this clip!!!!

  • this is nasty....OMG>..too sick

  • are you kidding me? this 'isn't' dissonant. This is the definition of dissonance...in fact i think thats a catchier name for the song. Please don't misconstrue this as an attack on their technical ability - I just think this in most places its too 'out there'

  • i dont think they take what you say as an attack because honestly, it is hard to take what u say seriously.

the song was written by John Coltrane and the arrangement was done by Michel Camilo, you can refer to it on his Spirit of the Moment record

this video is an interpretation of that arrangement

it would be presumptuous to call Michel Camilo dissonant without cause

mock the musicians, but dont mock the arrangement, that is silly

  • Hi everyone! We are so excited to hear all of the great feedback on the video clip. And to all of you wonderful jazz purest please don't be offended. We're just some music loving, college educated, church boys who love and respect jazz greats like yourself. Stay tuned for more. Blessings.

  • Could not find at one point where the drummer dragged. Please post a video to show how it is done.

  • lol

  • GREAT!

  • Just shows me that jazz isn't for everyone, its obvious they are all incredibly talented musicians but that just sounded unbelievably dissonant to me. am i listening wrong?

  • maybe its the way they structured the chords changes

  • The way we structured the chords is inspired by Michel Camilo's version.

  • man this was awesome

  • I don't think it is dissonant, but I guess it depends on the listener. However, there is a lot of intellect and emotion tied into this. There are different ways to approach this tune. Coltrane did it his way and everyone else has theirs. This version in particular stems from Michel Camilo. What is being done here are just chord substitutions and playing over them. I hope this helps!

  • I agree and the drummer is dragging a bit. They are talented and their is flavor but its not authentic. No offense.

  • I'm curious to know how this is not authentic.

  • im an avid jazz listener... they are not jazz musicians..lol. TALENTED AS HECK THO!! and the degree of difficulty is way up there..

  • Fantastic! Love the arrangement!

  • crazy

  • that was disgustingly awesome.

  • I screamed when Reggie did the guitar chords....OMG!!!

  • Das My Boi

  • That was mean!!! Gotta love jazz

  • It's great to see one of my greatest bass influences on the tube. This solo is killing and I love this arrangement of Giant Steps. Also if you guys haven't already, check out his CD with Gospel Park. It is off the chain. Although the whole CD is great I'm wearing out Giant Steps, Awesome God, and his live solo cut Somewhere Over the Sea. It's making me shed on not only my bass chops but my writing and melodic chops as well. GET the CD if you don't have it. You will NOT be disappointed!!!
