@baudilus: Coltrane came up with the Giant Steps changes as a technical exercise. He didn't intend for this song to be artful in the first place, so I think that to push ones self to the limits with this particular song fulfills its original intent. While my comment does prove the point of your comment, I think that it's a bit tasteless of you to post an obviously negative comment on a video that so clearly demonstrates three artists deep devotion to their respective crafts.
Strange and off-putting. The only reason you could tell there was a structure was that all three were playing the same noise. Difficulty for difficulty's sake is not music, IMO. This wasn't musical at all.
@drkey88 me either. ppl always tryna play over Giant Steps and dont even know what the song is about so they play a bunch of nothin over it. Giant Steps aint easy but it aint the definition of jazz. Coltrane has many other tunes way harder like 26-2
Gentlemen that was an execellent display of musicianship and great arrangement. We need more music and I will be part of the movement to play instruments not computers.
why dont you post a reply then and show them how a bass is "supposed" to sound. IF not, then this clip CLEARLY speaks for itself and is awesome! Sounds like jealousy!!
it's not about the way it's "supposed" to sound. it's about how the individual wants there instrument to sound. i don't like the tone of the bass and thats my opinion. but i like the song and the way they have arranged it
I feel ya on that NOTE (LOL)!! There will ALWAYS be haters amongst us huh??? Yeah, why don't YOU post YOUR low/mellow sound "PattenDevin"??? So that others can determine whether your sound is great or disgusting?
the drummer was never behind and this was more than a jazz interpretation of Giant Steps this shows you what church musicians do every Sunday..take a song and add some "stank"!! It aint for every "trained" musician out there but its for me!!lol...I would love to see the negative critics on this video to prove ONE point of criticism with some proof other than a comment with no backing..A.K.A. HATIN' lol
Reggie your gift is God anointed I wish just for a 1 hour lesson, I have cr5 ken smith bass, you can see me playing on youtube untc1, any pointers will be well appreciated.
@Bozorius Throughout the history of great music, jazz, funk etc, you get this effect of one guy laying back and the other playing on top of the beat. It creates a tension that is a creative choice. It takes a highly developed sense of *internalized time* to be able to do this and make it work. These guys make it work.
So your observation is incorrect. It's not "bad swing".
@paulvienneau Yes, this is the beauty of music, everyone can have different feelings, that was my personal feeling and a criticism to the contemporary jazz attitude: too much
very nice reggie , im a bassist in london and my dear friend colin who is a hare krishna devotee pointed me in your direction . great playing on this giant steps ... but i like the clips in the park more !!! thanks for the music , mike .
are you kidding me? this 'isn't' dissonant. This is the definition of dissonance...in fact i think thats a catchier name for the song. Please don't misconstrue this as an attack on their technical ability - I just think this in most places its too 'out there'
Hi everyone! We are so excited to hear all of the great feedback on the video clip. And to all of you wonderful jazz purest please don't be offended. We're just some music loving, college educated, church boys who love and respect jazz greats like yourself. Stay tuned for more. Blessings.
Just shows me that jazz isn't for everyone, its obvious they are all incredibly talented musicians but that just sounded unbelievably dissonant to me. am i listening wrong?
I don't think it is dissonant, but I guess it depends on the listener. However, there is a lot of intellect and emotion tied into this. There are different ways to approach this tune. Coltrane did it his way and everyone else has theirs. This version in particular stems from Michel Camilo. What is being done here are just chord substitutions and playing over them. I hope this helps!
I promised that I would put this on here Reggie so here it goes doc! Goodnight! The doors of the church are open! Favor IS fair and the anointing can only do what you just did!!!
It's great to see one of my greatest bass influences on the tube. This solo is killing and I love this arrangement of Giant Steps. Also if you guys haven't already, check out his CD with Gospel Park. It is off the chain. Although the whole CD is great I'm wearing out Giant Steps, Awesome God, and his live solo cut Somewhere Over the Sea. It's making me shed on not only my bass chops but my writing and melodic chops as well. GET the CD if you don't have it. You will NOT be disappointed!!!

at its best music should be fun, even w/ mistakes.

in any case i had fun playing this & i admit i was the weakest link lol.

SaltRok123 2 years ago
i dont think they take what you say as an attack because honestly, it is hard to take what u say seriously.
the song was written by John Coltrane and the arrangement was done by Michel Camilo, you can refer to it on his Spirit of the Moment record
this video is an interpretation of that arrangement
it would be presumptuous to call Michel Camilo dissonant without cause
mock the musicians, but dont mock the arrangement, that is silly
