wow, i'm going to start learning to play the alto sax after christmas, i hope i get as good as this! I'm setting myself a target - be able to play like this in less than a year, hopefully even less than half a year.

It's incredibly hard, i heard... :/ I know the basics of reading sax music, and I preety much know my theory.

@Reetyrose Not to be a downer, but even though Kenny G isn't regarded as the top in the saxophone world, he's still been playing for 40 years, which isn't something you can exactly build up to in anywhere close to a year. However, best of luck on the sax! It's a wonderful instrument, and I love every gig I play, most of all, have fun!

@drumstyx6464 Actually you find that the higher up the ladder you go the more people say hes good. I have a friend who was pretty much near the top before settling down for a teaching job who went as far as to say he was the best. though im pretty sure hes not a big fan of his music. (cant say his name or ill prob in trouble lol) alot of people say hes bad cause they dont like his music but that really has nothing to do with it. if you listen to the technique its hard to say that he cant play.

@DrewYTS I certainly wouldn't go as far as to name him the best. I reluctantly admit that smooth jazz is actually something I'd like to get into, but it takes far more work to play bebop or straight ahead jazz. His technique is actually recognizably improper; playing from the side of his mouth, but that's not really the issue, as he can clearly play and sound good. He's a decent player who got lucky, he's just extremely arrogant, which is why people may tend to badmouth him.

@DrewYTS actually thats completely untrue. he has MAJOR tuning issues, especially on soprano. in terms of his improvisation - I have jazz students with much more expanded vocabularly. all Kenny G does is play "psuedo blusey shit" to quote Pat Metheny! Im sorry but messing around with a pentonic scale for 24 bars is NOT jazz improvisation.

@dontevenstartme Lol no no i know he cant improvise and is out of tune. Im just talking technique. Im not sure if youre a sax player or not but if so than youll know what im talking about. he flies throught teh stuff eh plays almost effortlessly (sp?) im not talking about recordings either. when it comes to interval jumps and such theres rarely a pause or a note that doesnt speak. A down to middle D for example, or mid to low E. Imo hes more suited for classical than jazz. Tech wise at least
