in response to thediceman's comment , it may have been 'good old american rock n roll' that influenced the beatles and stones , animals etc but it was good black americans that sung it and it took the british bringing it back to america in the sixties to make you lot realise it !!!!
@charliebrockett I do love Larry Williams original~ but being a guitar player--I do prefer the Beat boys guitar heavy version a little more...just a little...
I love it when these 'educated opinions' state how "most Beatle fans know....blahblah etc" How does anyone say that rubbish?? How tf do they know what "most" are thinking?
There are some rock and roll songs that have great instrumental beginnings, such as Justine by Don & Dewey or Good Golly Miss Molly by Little Richard. But Slow Down by Larry Williams has to rank right up at the top. What a great start to a song!
Glad you posted this with the cool 45 shots. I came to know this song through a great cover done by the band 'Zebra' in 1983. I wanted to hear the original credited to Larry Williams.
The Beatles and the Stones were never shy about acknowledging their musical roots. In Keith Richards' autobiography "Life", he states that in the early days of the Stones it was their mission to bring American blues and R&B to England. At that time he never imagined the Stones would last longer than 2-3 years. In their own way, the Beatles dis the same with their early records.
Not many know that SLOW DOWN was a Larry Williams song way before the Beatles did it (Goes to show ya who influanced them ) Good old American Rock and Roll
@thediceman711 I think it is pretty obvious because nor Matchbox nor Slow down from single do not sound like Beatles original recording, not speaking that it says on the cover.
@thediceman711 Most Beatles fans know that Slow Down was not written by the Beatles. It was not a big hit for them and mostly constituted filler material. Also Larry Williams was not a major influence on the Beatles.
Brilliant song.I doubt many would have even heard of it if it wasn't for the Beatles version.

@MrBEB123 Well they also covered Bad Boy and Dizzy Miss Lizzy. I think he was a significant influence. Or at least on John Lennon he was

@Keleborzik John Lennon also covered Larry's 'Boney Maronie', but I prefer the originals of all 4 songs...

right. beatles stole it from black american singers, and re-did it, changing it just enough so that white kids would like it.
