@ Freyja1133 -- True, that might have been their more immediate source (as I hear by listening to "Starlight"). Halloween III probably took the melody from "London Bridge," though other folk songs may share the melody of "London Bridge." But London Bridge falling down certainly matches the idea of the Walls of Jericho coming down also, so maybe they had both in mind.

it was weird what happened to Helloween. i bought this album when it came out, it was ground breaking and very highly thought of by my metal thrashing bretherin, but then it all changed.

i saw them in London for the keeper of the 7 keys tour, new singer ( who was very good by the way ) but the sound had changed, almost commercial.

it was a shame, i like this Helloween.

in my opinion, keeper was a very commercial sounding album compared to jericho. its also a lot slower and is missing the edginess of jericho.

@NefariousDreary that beginning riff is allllll thrash, but helloween sums up to be a power metal band, if you like labeling bands like that. 1984-metallica, trapped under ice(thrash) same riff, 1982-exodus impaler(thrash with kirk hammet demo) same riff, and helloweeen utilized it beautifully here as well as metallica and exodus.

Nope.. the melodic part, makes it melodic. the music's speed says thrash.. kai's voice here has a thrash-punk type of singing. typical power metal stuff are the keepers albums, running wild music, gamma ray, stratovarious, blind guardian.. those bands never played something like walls of jericho.

this is such a fucking great album, one of the best album in the heavy metal genre in the 80s.. but its not typical power metal music, sorry

@beaffteki guess what, alot of those bands' speed say thrash.......It's not typical but it still is power metal. The same goes for There is no such thing as melodic thrash. Such features only make power metal other wise all those bands you named could be called melodic thrash, especially Blind Gurardian. Never played something like Walls of Jericho? Have you not heard Blind Guardian's first album? In fact, a great majority of Blind Guardian's music is like Walls of Jericho.

@NefariousDreary Kai sings clearly all the time in this album, where as in Gamma Ray, he tends to use gruffness alot more often and he still has a punky sound in his singing. And yes, a good amount Running Wild does sound like Walls of Jericho. Just imagine Kai's voice instead, singing something like Riding the Storm. Thrash is more of a dark sound. Walls of Jericho's sound is too glorious and melodic to be thrash. You should check out Helloween's newest album 7 sinners. It's heavy as this one.

@kenneedee Funny. It was the opposite for me. Maiden helped me discover tons of other metal bands, from Black Sabbath to Helloween to Dream Theater.

Maiden's no longer my favorite band, but they deserve tons of credit for introducing me to the world of metal. It's no lie to call them one of the definitive metal bands, I guess. :3

Niece´s little child got a toy ball that talks and plays some melodies when you touch it. One of the melodies is that traditional (from england i guess?) i first heard on walls of jericho. So i got some gusto and grab out the CD from the shelf, one of the first CDs i bought in the late 80´s.
