@kaylasturner yeah - I would like to deco the walls, but the landlord has strick rules - no holes except in narrow band of wood that connects wall to ceiling. I've seen other folks get around it with stuff on string and sticky tack to adhere posters... I'm still thinking... :)
Definitely put some plants there. Plants are good for so many reasons. Like not only for decorating but also psychologically seen it makes you feel happier or something (read that somewhere). Some plants smell nice and can help to clean the air a little. Just make sure that you are well informed about what kind of plants you can put in that spot because I don't think it would get much sunlight there.
@kayanomae oddly enough, one of my students knows a sumo stable master, and she got me a bunch of sumo stuff during the winter break - was such a nice surprise. So now I have a cool SUMO calendar hanging out there until I can decide what to put there. Trying to stay warm, but very cold this week - don't want to move from under my kotatsu! :)
1. Put giant catalogue desk that has tons of hot Geisha catalogues and hot girls dating catalogues and eventually choose 2-3 and narrow down to 1 and I mean marry her!
2. Put some mini gym thing and yoga mattress there and at least once a day do some push ups, easy leg and back stretching excersizes. So after 1 year you'll feel very happy.
Put in a table (could be homemade) for temporary work space, projects, quests and/or floral or decoration arrangement along with some recreation/exercise mats and/or dumb bells, ropes, treadmill etc.
i think you've got the right idea with bookshelves. Since it's sort of an entryway type area, go with something visually appealing? I mean first thing when you walk in the front door, you've got something pleasing or calming when you come in? Like a small bowl fountain. I think they might make those that work with batteries and last a while. Or even some scent diffusers. I used them in my college dorm because we couldn't have any kind of candle. Just dip the reed in the oil and you're all set.
Actually, if you have moved back to Japan by yourself and are living alone in that apartment, maybe leaving the space empty would be cool. I have unused, empty space in my house and it is easy to keep clean and also makes the place seem bigger. Sometimes, not utilizing every nook and cranny could be a good decorating tip. But, what do I know? lol Welcome back to Japan.
@DreamAcademyJapan yep - back in Japan, working at a university and living alone. It's true, it sure is easy to clean than space. :) But I think I need something there to keep my stuff in... I'm still deciding, and getting lots of good suggestions from the folks here. Cheers.
I would think a good use of the space would be a multi use space. In the sense, to have it a place to put you wallet, coat and other things you walk in with and need to grab on the way out, coat hanging, and book storage. This is my visual thought - the top half would have pegs to hang coats - under that a flat surface to place wallet and such, and the bottom half for storage of books. Just a thought :)
btw it could be nice to have waterfall wall fountain, it's relaxing to hear the water and for the summer maybe it can make the room a little not to hot /watch?v=4kX2MJwd8Cw, just maybe :D
A suit of samurai armor would be so choice for that space. I once homestayed with a family that had a yoroi armor set on display in their home (no joke). That was awesome...no home is complete without one.
what about a small electric fireplace that has a top that you can use like a shelf for those keys, wallet, and whatnot and make that space warmer. or what about a fish tank! or maybe a plant... or a grandfather clock or a wall mirror to check yourself out it... just spitballing ideas
@mcjangles fish tank would be super cool - but lord knows if fish could survive in the arctic conditions and sweatbox that space is in the winter and summer, and no outlets for pump, etc. heater is not a bad idea, but I'm rarely out there...
I think book shelf too... I read plants.. and I thought the same thing.. but it gets hot in the summer.. and then cold.. unless the plants were fake. =\ But then they're not as nice. Maybe a small tree since they seem ok with both hot and cold and might add a nice sent to the room.
I like the book shelves idea. I would do floating book shelves, for the fact that you can make it creative looking and functional at the same time. Or I would add a full length mirror (towards the bottom) and shelves for hair brush, lint roller, etc up on top. OR (see the girl in me coming out) half mirror in the middle, a small corner table for your things, and shelves up on top. Well good luck.
Maybe a small table to put your keys etc. on, and a bookcase?
When you mentioned your Blu-Ray player, it made me wonder: is Blu-Ray the norm in Japan? (As I'm sure you know, back in the US DVDs are way more common because they cost about half as much- but maybe Japan would be different because perhaps Japanese people would prefer the sharper graphics and not mind paying more- just like how Germans don't mind paying more for high-performance cars.)
@ThatOtherTom nope - it's still relatively new and not mainstream - many rental DVD shops only get select titles on Blu ray, and then it might be one or two BRs to every 10 DVD copies.
A room you can't use, too hot/cold, no electrics- this just screams aesthetics. I'd go for a few fake plants, maybe a traditional japanese scroll with some sort of koan on it, and if you really want to go crazy a small shrine type thing. Of course you're going to need somewhere to put your stuff when you get home (as you said). In any case good luck.
@TiramisuHappy had a stationary bike for a year (belonged to people that moved back and retook their stuff) - never used it once... I hate exercising... :P
@bratfun wouldn't that be cool - but I'm transitioning to digital... won't be long before I have a Kindle fire or iPad and then I'll hardly buy any proper comics anymore
I think that either a bookshelf or plant would be the way to go with that space. It seems like if you put something that is too big there it would get in the way of your doors and walkway.
@TheTraveler12 dryers are expensive - both to buy and operate, so most Japanese homes do without. You can get one machine that does both, but good ones start above $1000 and I've heard aren't so great at the drying part.
@myargonauts yea.. thats what i was trying to say. the dryer/washer all in one. didn't word it properly. so they dont do a good job of drying? well that sucks. lol.
Hello and Good evening I like the idea of the two tall/small book cases that you can do but since you are used to the desk being there what about a semi circle table small one of course, that way it doesn't go out too much into the way and you can place the daily essentials on the small table.
Bookshelf with books of course but add some memory related stuff this would be really nice.. while I'm writing this comment you just said bookshelf...
I would suggest using it primarily as a storage area, if it's not really comfortable as a living space. This way you can get all your non daily use items out of the way. Kinda rare to have extra room in a Japanese apartment, maybee you could rent out space to your neighbours for their stuff !
Why wouldn`t the room where the laundry machines go be the laundry room? You can`t hang up your clothes outside to dry all of the time even if you have a veranda/balcony.
Jason Jason you need a wife! Why do we Americans always think we need to put stuff in empty spaces. Sumo and star Wars blow up figures would make a good conversation piece
You should checkout nissen.co.jp for furniture. They have good prices and free or cheap shipping from what I remember. I ordered a TV stand from them before that was much cheaper than what I could find at the local store.
A single, tall bookcase. You can use one of the shelves for your bills, wallet and such. If you're going to block the floor space, use all the vertical space. And a bookcase will be shallower than a desk, so it won't get in the way so much. But go tall.
if you can mount anything on that wall how about a small hook set to hang you keys on, or a nice indoor plant something green that will bright up that space
@tiggergirl06 draconian rules by my landlord prevent me from hanging almost anything on the walls - I can only put pins, etc in the small strip of wood that trims between wall and ceiling.
That is a nice clear open space. Do to the uncomfortable environment during Winter and Summer, a piece of furniture wouldn't be smart since you probably wouldn't be speading more than a hot minute in that area; IMO. Maybe just put some decor there. For example, a statue, huge plant, painting; a nice coat rack or any combination of those. It seems to me people delivering something to you or you passing by it quickly would be the only time that space would really be utilized. BTW, nice space.
Shelving? Coat rack? Second kotatsu? Posters? Paintings? Hang something to dry your laundry since you wont have a dryer? I think it depends on how you want to use the space. Is it going to be for utility, or is it going to be for storage? I don't really think you need anything there. You might need an open space at one point later on. Plus, maybe because the table that was there is gone now you feel like you have to replace it with something because its weird not having it now?

You could get a colorful rug maybe red, or something warm to lay in front of the doors to your bedroom. Bookshelves would be nice, in my house I had a nook about that big I got a couple of small bookshelves, or a small table. My wife and I put some very creative art pieces small ones locally made or DIY, or maybe one from just a store, to add a little more color and pop to your apartment, I don't know if you can paint your walls or not but you could do that too.
You could also hang up a favorite painting, poster, or maybe a picture of something that has meaning to you. This could all be done on a budget if you shop smart. I know that my wife and I are one a strict budget but we made our room look fantastic and it cost us less than 1,000 dollars. Remember there is nothing wrong with old used furniture or objects it adds character to your home.
Coat rack? Shoe rack? Poster of Freddy Mercury to greet you every time you come back from work? (Although I am not quite sure about how you feel towards Queen)
