if you a club dj or backin up an mc on stage(which is rare now) thats cool. cuz bringing in 1,000 records is a pain in the ass. but DJ BATTLES? that aint HIP HOP to me, even though todays so-called tablist use nuthin but that annoying techno crap in the DMC that NOBODY knows.
uh mixing was still part of DMC until the mid 90's! but when all those wack ass BATTLE BREAK RECORDS flooded the sets! it got boring and uncreative to ME!!! i like PTRIX,SHORTKUT and Craze sets, but using SERATO???? live???? in a BATTLE!! makes no sense!! your not a "dj" and i know alot you newbie idiots will differ! but that shit requires noooooooooooo skill!! the whole level of using a known record died when Dmc allowed that shit! all i hear is rhythmless noises and that corny techno shit!
@ozulu45 i can see your point, cause although Serato is the new thing, the fact that they gotta go back and click on a song or make a playlist lightweight puts scratch DJs in a square 1 kinda place. but I will have to admit, if DJs can make anything creative with any kind of technology available to them and make it theres, then I give them respect in any battle.
@Coatl360 no cool with the push button dj's with pre-made techo mixes! anybody can do that! a little kid can do that shit! oh iam sorry it's called DJ HERO!
The 1986 DMC championships was at the Hippodrome not the Albert Hall, I was there, Cheese had by far the biggest crowd reaction and ripped it up doing stuff that only the US Djs were doing at the time. He did quite a bit of the set at Fresh 86 as well.
DMC launch the ONLINE DJ CHAMPIONSHIP on Feb 3rd. The DJ worlds most creative journey! Any DJ any age can enter and there are no equipment limitations! Vist DMC DJ Online .com for more information!
yo thanks for putting this up, it brought back mad memories cause I know Cheese personally from these days. I want to do a movie on dude life he inspired a lot of kats musically and in other ways that would make a good movie. Im one of those dude he inspired. Him and Fat Cat. Looked up to them boys, made me do what I do. If yall ever see this, its E, red Alfa romeo, Black Jeep?, Wado we use to trade cars?
Not only did Cheese introduce scratch routines to the DMC, but take a look at the turntable/mixer setup. He was cuttin back and forth between records with the tables set up "record player" style and a gigantic mixer set to the side. Dude looked like he was guarding Michael Jordan when he was scratching on the far turntable. Ha ha. They should make today's DJ's work on the same setup, Cheese's setup makes it that much more difficult to execute. Amazing!
@goods59 some of the mixing aspect needs to be in todays DMC! all these guys do is use pre-mixed battlebreak records, and scratch off rhythm!! it really horrible! now they allowed serato up there?? they need to just close Dmc down! the last 5 year have been awful! i will never waste my money on one of those dmc tapes again!!
I was there when DJ cheese won and believe me he was not a popular winner, because as was said at the time ,this was a mixing competition not a scratching competition,Maybe the mixes sound dated now but our job as DJs then was to get people on the dance floor.
it was new for the DMC! not in the dj battle world! NEW MUSIC SEMINAR BATTLES date back to 1981! from WHIZ KID TO EAZY G ROCKWELL! check JAZZY JEFf and TONY G in the 86 seminar. This is slow compared to them cats of the same year!
Oh dear...I just found Mr Voorns' mix on YouTube. Nothing wrong with the mix, but there's a few sour grapes in the comments from the man himself. How sad.
A lot of controversy when he won this - he beat Orlando Vroon and Chad Jackson to win this. They did straight mixes and nobody in the UK was used to Cheese's kind of 'mixing'. I didn't like it at first and Cheese got panned by radio DJ Robbie Vincent. DJ James Hamilton was one of the judges and stated in his Record Mirror column that Cheese was simply way ahead of time and deserved to win. I've still got all the 1986 DMC contest mixes on tape and they sound pretty awful now - except Cheese.
and if my memory is correct chad jackson was giving it loads giving out about all the scratching and (check out chad in the 1987 championships) but when cheese was asked why he won did he not say "because my hands were the fastest"
If you listen to some of the mixes back then they were not bad.... Orlando voorns mix was good. And there was a guy from denmark cannot remember his name any ideas?
@jahovia11 - fair comment, they were good at the time. It's just that Cheeses' set has stood the test of time fairly well, whereas the runners up haven't. Not sure who the Danish guy was - Orlando was from Holland I think.
BTW - I'm not even much of a fan of scratching/turntablism! Personally prefer mixes, but this set by Cheese always stuck in my mind as it really changed the whole DMC thing.
Only people from the DMC weren't use to seeing this style of cuttin' and scratchin', but hip hop heads new about this from time. UK dee jays like Cutmaster Swifrt, DJ Pogo, Imperial Mixer, Cosmic Jam, DJ Streets Ahead, Sweetmix Junior, etc were all not far from this standard.
Nice to hear this again, I had a copy of this on audio tape. Cheese was way ahead of his time, he pioneered the way the championships are today. He was not afraid to be different, respect due.
dam all the catalogs i had from DMC back in the early 90's never had this video!! dam dude you got one on us older cats. i didnt think this was video taped
I'm always telling people how i was part of hiphop history i djed with cheese threw out nj during this period and no joke i was good or just as better than this and if cheese was honest he would admit it but he doesnt have to hes the best as far as im concerned big ups to my cousin rich he know's dj row from freehold ask about me inthese circles.
thanks so much for posting this. DJ cheese has been one of my fav's..just from record..never seen him live! FIrst DJ battle i was in in 1991..a dude from toronto copped this routine, minus the handcuffs.. now I'm pissed as he plagurized Cheese..Everyone else had original routines..I must admit, I have never liked the Hand Cuff Gimmick, slows down the flow and is cumbersome, he is much more innovative without a gimmick.
He 3een thru alot and I'm glad to see he doing him again.

I've always wondered what the original track was for "It's Time" as he mixed into his set, early on. Can someone please help me with this?

@RABBI2717
Yeah, but that was only common sense from Chad. From this point onwards, the DMC changed, so it was pointless sticking to just straight mixing.
