John Petrucci tore the hell out of the guitar line, I'll give him that. But what the fuck was Sherinian thinking with the synths, which are what makes this song beautiful? The opening sounds like he's playing circus music, not one of the greatest rock instrumentals of all time. LaBrie flubs the lyrics (WAS BORN TO grow and die, not IS GONNA grow and die), and the bass is nowhere to be heard compared to the original (especially when this is Myung playing).
Wonderful...Dream theater are something else..Music from Elton John, before he sold out and became an establishment pawn..'Goodbye Yellow-Brick Road was a superb album though
God, I ADORE these guys. Amazing for a guy in his thirties fo still be able to feel such love, in identification and not out of a feeling of separation, now.

I love Zep, I love Queen,
But I've never cried harder from the beauty of a song before.

Okay - maybe you're a purist and consider yourself like the first fall of snow. Your crap doesn't stink? So no one can do any song cover like the original, huh? Maybe not....but this was my first time hearing this. I think it's great! It's not a "perfect" cover - who wants that? If so, just listen to the original! It even gets better with "Love lies..". My absolute favorite Elton John song... and I can honestly say, this cover was so fantastic. This is my first time hearing Dream Theater (I know, how can I like metal and not know of them?), and I'm very impressed.
I'm a huge pre 78 EJ fan and this is my favorite absolute favorte song. so i was curious to hear DT's version. I thought i'd get about 1 min in and move on. (DT can sometimes overcomplicate some songs IMO) They were terrific here. I thought LeBrie was great too. He put his own touch on some parts, but that's okay. Heck even Elton can't sing it like that anymore.
@Fiefypants james really has his ups and downs yeah, but both times ive heard him live, he was great ( oslo 2007 and 2009). what would you say his best live performance was? amazing on score..

And what does "can be just a decent singer" mean, does it mean "he is only decent" or "hes good" WHAT DOES IT EVEN MEAN!?
@StricknSTW Uh, do your homework before spreading lies. Elton wrote NONE of his lyrics, Bernie wrote ALL of his lyrics for him. Now that is the end of that discussion.
@1gdfjf Bernie did not write them all. Elton greatly modified the lyrics to Daniel and Holiday Inn, also John wrote the lyrics to Heres to Next Time, Come Back Baby, Ego, Flintstone Baby, with help. He wrote Dont Go Breaking My Heart and Hard Luck Story, almost all by himself. And Lucy in the Sky With diamonds was written by the Beatles, not Bernie, and it was an Elton John Number 1. So I think its you without the homework,
I hate to say it, but this version is better than any live recorded version I've heard by Elton John & Band. (As I remember, the live version from Elton's 1980 tour was excellent though. ) Excellent job here by Dream theater.

I always had Change of Seasons for a while, didn't really listen to the covers, but I heard this on my mp3 player while stuck in traffic on a bus. Bloody amazing!
I have loved this song as long as I can remember. I could never imagine anyone ever covering this classic and doing such a wonderful job at it. When I first heard this version played by Dream Theatre, I cried. I loved it so much. I hoped that sir Elton loves it. I know I did.
Oddly enough...even though as fuckingly awesome as this is...it somehow doesn't sound as hard as Elton John and his band doing it. Honestly, listen to the version on the live album Here and There. And, it's only piano, bass, drums and guitar!
Dream Theater is a great band. And they're not trying to be better than Elton.
Who is the greatest idiot, the one that says Dream Theater plays better than Elton John (what the hell, this just CANNOT be compared) or the one that thinks a cover must sound exactly the same as the original version? No one will never sound like Elton John, face it. If you like Elton's version better, go listen to it. BTW, Dream Theater's version is particularly interesting.

i dont understand where these guys get off covering an epic tune such as this? who the hell is dream theatre anyway? didnt they fall by the wayside with metal in the early 90'sthey really should stick to there bread and butter and play pull me under goddamit they r not nearly as good as elton john he is a musician and these guys just play as fast as they can but it is a pretty good cover
are you an ass? they are as good as elton and they can cover anyone they want to...they are not claiming to be better than him. they just like the song and wanted to play it. ever think of that? fool.
This is an EP! Not a CD.. and why they play it is because they like this song too, maybe. And they play it better than Elton John. And second off, Dream Theater doesn't just play fast. You haven't heard them, so you can't say whatever you want. You are so wrong.. listen to Lines in The Sand, I Walk Beside You, Scarred.. that's some "more regular" songs with no speed parts.
What the FUCK?! You have the nerve to actually criticize GOOD music, and ironically, call yourself "goodmusic", and slag off some of the most talented musicians in the rock world today?! This is an amazing song, and it may not be Elton, but it is still a great cover. You are taking up some valuable real estate on this earth - do everyone a favour, and exit this world or just come back when you have a clue! I'd HATE to see what you classified as good music... People like you disgust me...
AJAJAJAJ you know DREAM THEATER???? 23 years of carrear, exelent music, 4 of the most respt musicians in te world. the faggot here is you, or well elotn john.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
even though elton johns gay hes better then these fuckin fags all they did was butcher a good song. 23 years and havent heard more then 10 songs by them really good musicians. lol how longs elton john been going? you fucking faggot your a loser man no friends go kill yourself and cut your wrist to this bullshit.
thats your argument?? GOD, you go to the school??? if the dream theater's music is to hard to you bto understund it, or to heavy for your fag ears, well is beacuse you are a fag who listen another fag =) you see how simple i wrote it for you =). good luck please study more, and try to be a men and no a fag who thinks that the good music is how much the songd are played in a radio sation or mtv =)
Without knocking the Chairman of the club that gave the world Tony Currie, have always thought this song is separated from the rest of Elton John's songs by a wide chasm, with me on this side!
That intro is tough to cover, it was done so uniquely in the studio (Elton used a guest keyboardist and a rare synth). Just try finding a decent cover on YouTube. Even Elton rolls the tape for the intro live. Plus, Elton's band always speeds this one up way too fast. I think Dream Theater did a very commendable job here.
I also prefer Elton's original, but this is a good (if rather by-the-books) cover, and an interesting choice of a cover for a band like Dream Theater.
Dont have the same impact at start like Elton John has. The Synth Organ the you very 1st hear sounds horrid. But as the track get going its sounds ok.
Ok I have to say this is the first time I've heard this song from another band other then Sir Elton John and I have to say it doesn't even compare. The band for Elton John played the beginning faster, I really hate how the singer sings this. Sorry but even the band sucked, the only band member that was good was the dummer, just everything else seems out of tune.
WOW!! Nothing can touch the original, but damn, this comes close.

You should hear this in full stereo such as on a progressive rock stream through noise-cancelling headphones -- too wicked cool for words.

I have loved this song as long as I can remember. I could never imagine anyone ever covering this classic and doing such a wonderful job at it. When I first heard this version played by Dream Theatre, I cried. I loved it so much. I hoped that sir Elton loves it. I know I did.

This is definately one of the best covers I've ever heard. They even make it sound like a DT song from the Kevin Moore era.

Atmospheric and evocative. Listening to KM's later work in Chroma Key, this cover seems like a tribute to a strong influence.
iTitus 2 years ago
Oddly enough...even though as fuckingly awesome as this is...it somehow doesn't sound as hard as Elton John and his band doing it. Honestly, listen to the version on the live album Here and There. And, it's only piano, bass, drums and guitar!

Elton John is an phenomenal musician.
BTW, Dream Theater's version is particularly interesting.

i dont understand where these guys get off covering an epic tune such as this? who the hell is dream theatre anyway? didnt they fall by the wayside with metal in the early 90'sthey really should stick to there bread and butter and play pull me under goddamit they r not nearly as good as elton john he is a musician and these guys just play as fast as they can but it is a pretty good cover
semicrayze 2 years ago
are you an ass? they are as good as elton and they can cover anyone they want to...they are not claiming to be better than him. they just like the song and wanted to play it. ever think of that? fool.
szeigler11 2 years ago 5
They play it well. Elton and Bernie would be flattered, I'm sure.
gasmmusic 2 years ago 4
This is an EP! Not a CD.. and why they play it is because they like this song too, maybe. And they play it better than Elton John. And second off, Dream Theater doesn't just play fast. You haven't heard them, so you can't say whatever you want. You are so wrong.. listen to Lines in The Sand, I Walk Beside You, Scarred.. that's some "more regular" songs with no speed parts.
Trumavarium 2 years ago
Man I love this song. Never actually ever heard it from Elton John. But I think the cover will do!

Well, I gotta give credit to Elton for the original but the excitement and reverence Dream Theater give this song is inspiring.

People like you disgust me...

goodmusic57 2 years ago
thats your argument??

I think Dream Theater did a very commendable job here.

i think john's solo is full of sadness. original is always a masterpiece but DT perfects it other way

I also prefer Elton's original, but this is a good (if rather by-the-books) cover, and an interesting choice of a cover for a band like Dream Theater.

not the best start with the synth organ but like always Dream Theater makes the best songs. and then makes good songs Great

sorry but the more i listen to this version i hate it. Vocals are so bad.

Dont have the same impact at start like Elton John has. The Synth Organ the you very 1st hear sounds horrid. But as the track get going its sounds ok.
kippafish 3 years ago
i think it would sound good if the keyboard player upgraded his patch to something modern. it sorta spoils it.
davzy0001 3 years ago
the keyboard player also left the band 9 years ago. 4 years after this was recorded.

Ok I have to say this is the first time I've heard this song from another band other then Sir Elton John and I have to say it doesn't even compare. The band for Elton John played the beginning faster, I really hate how the singer sings this. Sorry but even the band sucked, the only band member that was good was the dummer, just everything else seems out of tune.
screwu050391 3 years ago
you seriously going to compare the technicality of dream theater to Elton John? are you joking?
Elton john's song is the original so props to him, but just because you don't like this version doesn't mean the band sucks
