It doesn't make sense to sparkle, aren't they faster than humans? So fast that they can snap their neck without the human even realizing anything. @LiveLaughLove8489 I think the reason they sparkle is because the whole series was based off of a dream that Meyer had (I'm kind of ashamed I know that. Not exactly a big twilight fan). It was the "meadow scene" or whatever that she dreamed about, and that's the part that he first sparkles in. So, maybe it was a detail that she liked or something. Or, at least, that's my guess. But hey, maybe some chicks dig sparkles?

Imagine this: if a human were to catch a (Meyer-universe) vampire off guard in the sunlight, and said vampire quickly took off running, throwing light ("sparkling") in all directions for a brief moment before disappearing--the only way to make sense of what you just saw would be to determine it caught fire/exploded into a puff of dust.
