@wisewarrior7 Both are great. I like Riddick better, buy it depends on my mood too. Sometimes I watch 1 or the other, while sometimes I watch both, back to back. I have no idea why movie critics have such a hard on for giving low rates/scores to Riddick. It is 1 of my favorite films. I love it. I love the CGI, & photography, especially on the different planets. I can't wait for the 3rd movies to come out. I read they are working on it & will start filming in Egypt.

His eyes were NEVER shined, that was a lie he told people so no one would know he's Furyan, because the Lord Martial wanted all Furyan males killed. If you watch TCoR you'll see the "dogs" in the prison in "Creamatorya" (or something like that) have the same eyes, that's because the "dogs" and Riddick are from the same planet.

It's never stated that the dogs or the eyeshine itself originate from Furya. The dogs eyes are similar, but the director's commentary states it's a mere genetic concidence.

There are differing stories on whether his eyes were shined or not. EFBB states that a voice unlocked it, and it was something he'd always had inside him. But Riddick himself sates they were shined, though it could be simple embellishment on his part.

Besides, Riddick didn't know he was Furyan until COTR.

Lets not forget the first thing we learn about Riddick is that he is some master killer/criminal already caught and already on his way to a slam... I'd say at the age of 35 or so.. Riddick himself when caught with the dogs in TCOR "It's an animal thing." The dogs knew Riddick was from their planet.. That's why Riddick shows them his eyes when one of the dogs finds him. To show the dogs they have a deeper connection.

He blocked it out when he was a child(Furya massacre) because the event traumatized him too deeply. In Pitch Black he states that he thought his mother tried to stangle him with his umbilical and left him in a trash can.

He later removes that mental block and discovers the truth, sometime into COR.(At least that's my thoughts.)

I believe he simply meant it to refer to himself as an animal, not that they were from the same place. The dogs mightve simply recognized his eyes.

@PGMX11 If I am not mistaken, it was mentioned in the DC cut of The Chronicles of Riddick or DC cut of Pitch Black. It wasn't by a doctor for a pack of Kool's. It has something to do w/a vision he had while in slam similar to the one he had in Riddick. A woman from his home world of Fury gave him the shined eyes after filling him in a bit of info on how he came to be - left in the trash w/his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck to die. Not 100%, maybe 85% that it was in commentary on DC movie

The fact that the first movie took place on a practically unknown world which gave a sense of abandonment and hopelessness which added greatly to the theme of the movie. The second movie takes place in civilization of Riddicks universe, and it addes an interesting sense of depth to the entire universe because of the drastic change in scenery.

We're whining because the movie tanked at the box office, which diminishes the likelihood of another successful film. The fans remember the failures and studios are less inclined to bankroll a film they feel might not draw in the audience. Making changes is fine but not when it changes the entire complexion of your character. Look at Dark Knight, Nolan made some changes but he kept the essence of the character, its world and history pure. Thats how you do it

I preferred Chronicles of Riddick. It developed a much better atmosphere and felt very original, Pitch Black felt like it was stealing all of it's concepts from the Alien series.

Pitch Black is a classic. The Character of Riddick is scripted (and acted) to perfection. The whole point of Riddick in this film is that you're never really sure if he's a good guy or a bad guy, it's always left amigious.

The sequel is dissapointing because it strips away the original mystery surrounding Riddick, and he becomes more of a token anti hero.

This is NOT a prequel for all of those getting confused. "Into Pitch Black" takes place AFTER the movie "Pitch Black" when a police officer is assigned to find out what happened to the survivors, including Riddick, of the crash.

he was found almost strangled to death as a baby. He tell the story. His parents were dead. His entire race had been wiped out. Imagine growing up with nobody to love you or show u how to love. Riddick lacks care and emotion for everyone except Jack. It shows the lack of affection he received as a child. Kids tend to block out the worse in their lives. The way some young rape victims wouldn't remember a rape at age 20. you pretend it never happens until you convince your mind it didn't.
