True the wrong notes are barely noticable unless you really know what you are listening to, You have an impressive ear and must know the piece well to catch it. Her musicality is wonderful in any case nad I greatly enjoy her.
. Here, in the Wu performance, is the perfect example of how “getting all the right notes” in a competent performance fares with a transcendent, *living presence* (i.e., alive!) one that happens to have a few stray ‘wrong notes.’
However, she does not approach the distinctive, immensely individual pianism of Bozhanov in the same work, nor does anyone else I’ve heard. In his version, the opening fanfare’s *resounding* chords introducing the waltz theme is a hint of the Aurora Borealis of soundscapes and the atomically rhythmic timings to come.
Evgeny Bozhanov played it wonderfully. Another performance that I think "got it" was by Jean-Yvs Thibaudet. Di Wu isn't a bad pianist, but she was outclassed quite a bit in this Van Cliburn.
This performance while quite brilliant is too hectic sounding and rushed. Also, she totally misses the whole big agogics in the main waltz theme. This is a MUST for this piece to make it truly effective
Absolutely lacks expressiveness...when you listen to Evgeni Bozhanov its completely more uplifting. Does not even sound like the same song....he is better plain and simple
The technique is quite fantastic, but I can't help but feel the performance is a tad mechanical and lacks expressiveness, especially after listening to Evgeni Bozhanov's version of the same piece in the same competition, in his final recital.
I think the problem with this piece - and the reason it is not among my favourites - is that it is very difficult to do a lot with the basic waltz theme itself (a problem I have when accompanying the sung version from the opera) - it won't take much rubato. I thought she did an excellent job with the poetic middle section, and the ending was really exciting.

"Janicezany, I agree!! Say, are you a pianist?"
Yes, or was. Haven't played (anything of substance) in about 10 years now. [But I did play quite a few items of Bozhanov's literature.]

Di Wu plays this piece VERY well. According to long-established standards.
A very competent and ‘clean’ technique that covers the special attraction of this Liszt transcription with verve.

Quaigaman:
She was way better than Evgeni [Bozhanov].
I don't like to point out blatant inaccuracies but here it must be done: Bozhanov was TONS better than her (OK - just a couple).

@janicezany She played better than evgeni at this song but, he is a better player! Thats what I meant!
