As physicists are narrowing down the field for the non/discovery of the Higgs Boson, new documentaries are needed to keep pace with what we've learned. I was looking for a video just like this one to post on Facebook to help spread the word. I must say, this is an excellent video, and I am very disappointed in PBS and Discovery for not picking it up. Let us know when this will be available for general home retail purchase, please - I want to see it in it’s entirety.
@Typho0n86 look don't you get the News where you live I was not on about neutrinos travelling a micro of a second faster than light.I was on about the news from CERN on Dec it was all over the news in the U.K and the rest of the European channels.You must be American and I feel for you with your rubbish biased news channels which are more about the presenters than actual news(fuck I hate that Bill O'Reilly,but that's another story)This is the piece I was on about; bbc higgs boson dec 13 2011
@justgold76 Aus im from, and I do hate Bill O'Reilly too :P But i dont agree with this Higgs boson so thats probably why i havnt seen the news; "Scientists in Geneva may have glimpsed elusive Higgs boson particle" - nothing solid in that news report. Gravity is a property of spacetime, not a particle. Before it was built I thought they caculated that the LHC was spose to reach those energys to detect the Higgs, but now u say its not enough, it will never be enough cause it dont exist!!!
I've bought dozens of paperbacks concerning Quantum Mechanics and the Standard Model and Cosmolgy. The books, Facts and Mysteries in Elementary Particle Physics by Martinus Veltman is one of the best because I finished it and felt like I understood the basic outline of thr Standard Model. It's astonishing just how complicated protons and neutrons are! It's amazing that our universe is such a life-friendly place where we don't have to think about Schrodinger's equation.

@justgold76 The LHC was not just built for the higgs. I wouldnt call it blowing money, it is progress and can test other theories. Their physics is wrong. Whats wrong with the bends in space that Realivity describes?
@Typho0n86 how strange to reply to my sarcastic reply 4 months ago, especially when we've just had exciting news out of CERN last week.cant say for sure yet but by the end of next year your dad,Stephen Hawking and yourself will be probably taking about it non stop.
@justgold76 Yeah I didn’t reply because I didn’t know u replied. & u didn’t answer my question "What’s wrong with the bends in space that Relativity describes?" I hate when people don’t answer questions and reply, yeah the LHC might have worked out that neutrinos can travel faster than light, still doesn’t mean that that Higgs exists
Never going to find the Higgs particle because it does NOT exist. If it did exist then black holes would trap them and the black hole would not have any gravitational pull. :S LOL
@Typho0n86 The higgs boson is the force carrier for mass. Black holes are points in spacetime where sufficient mass is concentrated to the point where spacetime falls in upon itself. Gravitation is the phenomenon in which physical bodies attract with a force proportional to their mass. The higgs comes first and determines mass, and gravity is the result of concetrated mass, so the higgs is fundamentally separate from the black hole. The graviton is the force carrier for gravity and is massless.
@Debil999 Space-time is the force carrier for mass, its the bends in space described by Einstein's Relativity, that give us gravity. Black holes are not just points, that have a thing called an 'event horizon' which has a diameter. The graviton does not exist. Everything does not need to be a particle.
@Typho0n86 You seem to be partly agreeing with me. The fabric of space Space-Time is a result of mass, without it, there is no gravity and there would be no fabric. The Higgs Boson and the Graviton are both theoretical "particles" that the standard model mathematically outlines but have not been observed in particle accelerators because the energy required to detect them is beyond the technological capacity of the human race. For now.
@Typho0n86 Additionally, everything that science can detect, from simple hydrogen atoms to electromagnetic radiation exhibits a very strange intrinsic property of both waves and particles. This is called the "wave-particle duality of matter", and is one of the founding principles of quantum physics. Gravitons and the Higgs are more than waves/particles; they are more like an intrinsic property of the universe that propagates at the speed of light, which also why they are so important.
the researchers at cern have been taking this god particle into account in their equations for the last 30 odd years. without it particle physics doesnt make ANY sense. so far none of the particles in the standard model have no spin. it is vital that there is at least one particle which has no spin for it to add up
@EarosioN Yeah its called the Theory of Relativity, by Einstein. Been used for over 100 years and has been tested and proven (GPS, Neculear power). Space can bend, its like another dimension of space. It doesnt have to be a praticle
and @souro19.. the Higgs is unique in that it imbues all other particles with mass. The photon is also an elementary boson- the Higgs effect itself is something else entirely- and they're Bosons not Higgsons, right? :) Agreed there did used to be a bias toward Europeans for Nobel prizes, but bear in mind Alfred Nobel himself was a European. I just read an article stating that the vast majority of Indians are ignorant of whom Bose was as well..
@jeebersjumpincryst they think it does, google super kamiokande for some interesting results- at one point it seemed it might have an imaginary mass, which would bend a lot of physicists out of shape.. that result gives us a mass for one of the neutrinos of about 1/20 of an electronvolt- so about 1/10,000 the mass of an electron. As the neutrino carries a few thousand e.v. away from the neutron decay, this means it's highly relatavistic, travelling at about the same speed as a proton in the LHC.
im not even saying i have a full grasp of this but i laugh when there are cocky theorists lol its THEORY STILL ACT COCKY WHEN YOU PROVE IT loopy or stringy as in big bang theory
@souro19 Nobel prize don't mean much, Einstein was given Nobel for photoelectric effect, while they ignored relativity, the people at the Swedish academy awards probably saw relativity as fiction, and never thought that one day it would be used in GPS satellites.
As for quantum physics, it was developed by many physicists, Einstein was not one of them.
@souro19 This Higgs-Boson particle has not been found yet! It's only a theory to this day.

you are completely wrong, E=mc2 was derived by Einstein starting from the equation of momentum P=mv. and there's no single formula, or 'mother of science'

@souro19 the first atomic bomb was correctly first theorized and attempted by the Nazis, then soon after was fully implemented by Oppenheimer in america, to make things clear, atom bomb was invented by German, German-american, Hangarian and others from several countries, it is not one country's invention, and certainly not India's.

isn't it kind of annoying that after all these years they are still using the "planetary" model of an atom in every animation, i mean, can't they just do the nuclei with little foggy things around and take a minute to explain to ppl that electrons do not actually move around the nucleus ? i'd thought that the point of educational videos would be to actually educate....
neutron = proton + electron + ANTINETRINO. Because the number of leptons must stay constant: in the left side the number of quarks is 3 (Q=3), the number of leptons is 0 (L=0) and the electric charge is also 0 (EC=0). Those things have to stay constant. This is the corect answer: proton (Q=3; L=0; EC=1) + electron (Q=0; L=1; EC=-1) + ANTIneutrino (Q=0; L=-1; EC=0). If you do the sum you'll find out that this is the right answer.
yes, the neutrino has mass but is very light. It is much lighter than the electron. The neutrino travels close to the speed of light. There are three types of neutrinos: electron neutrinos, muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos.
@RiiseRazvan hi - sorry bout laaate reply, but thanks for replying to my question about neutrino's mass and speed. You sound like you really really know a bit about Q Physics!

According to the credits, this video was conceived and produced by Martinus J. G. Veltman, who shared the 1999 Nobel Prize in physics for "for elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak interactions in physics". An article written by him called "The Higgs Boson" appeared in the November 1986 issue of Scientific American magazine.
@PornStarfishScooter Some YouTube "commentators" hold the distinction of a very predictable profile, with several character traits setting them apart from all others:

I feel sorry to all of you guys, since one day you all will realize that particles does not exist, nor the mass, it's just a feeling only .This is my question, take Hitler of Germany when he died his body contained lots of so called particles and those particles decayed into nature but not destroyed,as per your conservation theory, lets assume one of that particle went into an apple and you ate that, then the particle is in your body now, are you the HITLER?Learn Buddhism for the answer
I really enjoyed this video, but - not to a stickler - I find it strange that a video titled "Quest for the Higgs" doesn't even mention the Higgs Boson.

I learn a lot in this video, many vulgarisation video present the standard model by enumerate the 16 elementary particule with no real connection between them. Where is the continuation of this video? I will certainly pay to see those.
1. The strong nuclear force. A red up quark is the same as a green up quark or a blue up quark, with the exception of color charge. They are still the same particle, though.
2. This video excludes the existence of the muon, tau, their neutrinos, and the strange, charm, top, and bottom quarks.
Also, when a neutron decays, an ANTINEUTRINO is released, not a matter neutrino.
@SpaceTime4D Okay, I watched to the end of the video, and at least they mention "creating new particle" and add a "To Be Continued..." I can't wait for the sequel, and I hope it includes the second and third generation.
a quark isnt a molecule its an elementary (or fundamental) particle. as a side note if we discover gravity is particulate, this will eradicate the need for the higgs boson, as the graviton would give particles mass.
But what if gravity is a massive field in the sense that the graviton itself is massive? And there are a lot of other approaches who do not need the Higgs btw. The problem with the graviton is that it is a tensorial field.
I thought we were talking about the graviton. As far as I know there is no valid quatum theory of gravitation. But if you refer to QFT ... there is a rather sloppy use of math anyway in it. I am not afraid of math anyway.
Regarding the Higgs I guess there are interesting approaches like MSSM or Technicolor.
@AlienPositron A Universe with a massive graviton would be a Universe in which the force of gravity traveled slower than light. I can only imagine what strange repercussions that might have. (That's rhetorical. Actually... I can't.) It's easy to get caught up in talking about abstract quantum particles, and forget what macro-world effects might result from careless assumptions about the range of freedom of their various quantum numbers. Mass being a particularly sensitive knob.
When the quest for higgs boson is done another one will come, all these are illusions, lord buddha talked about 84 fundamental units which created the universe , which are not particles, 28 of them your senses can feel or measure , 52 of them you can't feel or measure,02 of them only can be measured by ur wisdom only,total 84.Learn "ABIDHAMMA"of buddhism it's not a religion, it's totally physics,time,space, and energy clearly explained
@dhk1978 Jesus Christ on a crutch, fuckworm~, where in the fuck did you learn that bullshit pseudoscience, the school of Borat? Goddamn it, how did you become such an idiot and so ignorant?
hehehe don't be primitive, you are forced to believe , what you are taught , when you are small, somebody showed you an apple and told you that this is an apple , so you believe.first the atoms , then the standard model, and then., I may be a idiot, but what you are doing is just measuring things,like mass, velocity etc.You have far more to go brother, you can talk if you only know or learn about the pseudoscience that i talk..until that believe what you are ask to believe
@matthmatthmatth No matter what you do, I'll always be in your head. You'll suffer nightmares about our exchanges, sleepless nights wondering where & who I am. Bwhahahahahaa, cursed, my son, cursed!
@matthmatthmatth There's nothing you can do, your powerless to resist replying to my brilliant taunts. You're to be forever tormented by me, no matter where you go! Bwahahahaaheeheehoho, my evil plan unfolds before your very eyes! 8-{
@matthmatthmatth Give it up already, your insults and desperate measures to ban me bounce off like rubber & will not stick to my Teflon protected body. In other words, you're screwed & powerless against my superior intellect and brilliant sardonic humor. The curse continues... :<D
@PornStarfishScooter Looks like I hit another nerve .. you responded several times. Better not stay on the computer too long, I'm sure they'll miss you on the grill at your fish and chips takeaway shop.
@matthmatthmatth Hey Mathew, tells about your mommy yelling at you when you jack off into your Spidey pj's. I'm sure readers will appreciate the hilarity! :-=)
hehehe by looking at your comments,Thank you for proving my theory, that you people are still very very primitive humans(?), Let's see in future what will happen to your so called particles
we assume that we will be able to duplicate this god particle, yet we will not. Not to mention we actually think we will find an example in nature. The question is that uses these particles of nuetrinos and quarks as its shell.
Do you ever think our perception of time is super slow and our planet is just a quark on someones eye and the eye is opening hence the universe is expanding but soon he she or it will blink??
@77syzygy Well apparently from what Ive heard a "quark" is the smallest molecule there is. Science isn't always accurate at first so I may be wrong. But that's supposed to be a theory or have any truth to it obviously its just an imaginative Idea I got when I was very stoned.
@Habaneroin No, no, no! Lay off the ganga, at least for an hr or 2, & watch this video. Quark & molecule? Are you serious? Dude, come on, really? Here's a hint: Up, Down, Top, Bottom, Strange, or Charm. The rest I'll let you look up!
@rkyeun Any predictions regarding LHC revealing the existence of the Higgs boson or supersymmetry once 7 Tev is achieved? If not, where do we go from there? M-Brane, D-brain, string theory in 10, 11 dimensions, quantum loop gravity, supergravity? Is it true branes in string have finite tension as postulated by Joe Polchinski? How about the implications of Calabi-Yau compactification containing hundreds of generations? What about Plank scale length of 10 to the minus 33 cm? Possible to detect?
I honestly don't know. String theory doesn't seem to have any evidence for it. If we don't find the Higgs, we may need to abandon the Standard Model, or patch it to be Higgsless.
We predict small black holes should evaporate, but we've never seen that happen. I'd say that should be our next experiment. Black holes suck in space and time, as well as the matter used. When the hole pops, does the space and time come back out? Does it come as energy? Maybe zero point energy can come out.
Are the particles they collide releasing different energie frequencies, you know like electron/positron Gamma ray etc? and has anyone found out anything else about Holons and spinions from the electron? One more thing...if a particle reaches speeds such as these, where is the infinate mass or growth in mass? this means traveling at 99.9999 etc the speed of light is in fact possible doesnt it? please reply if you can...thanks.
I'd argue with "elemetary particles". I wonder if we will find the most basic particle. Or the largest hyperstructures in the universe and multiverse.
The particles might be red green or blue depending on smaller particles.
IF NUKE PWR > CHEM (FOSSIL FUEL); BECAUSE ATOMS<MOLECULES THEN
1) Uranium 235 decays by ALPHA radiation (emitting 2 protons and 2 neutrons - i.e a helium nucleus / alpha particle)
2) Beta minus decay (which is what seems to be being described here) is where a neutron is converted into a proton, emitting an electron and an ANTIneutrino.
The neutron does not 'fall off' the nucleus.
I suppose this wouldn't affect the layman, but anyone with a pre-existing understanding would be completely confused.
@KaOssis Hey mental midget, you don't belong on this page. However I hope u reply so everyone can watch a moron make a fool of himself (herself?) in real time! Please explain your lame attempt at syntax, it's hilarious!!!!!!!! Let's see u "top quark" that! Hee, hee. Good one!
so one of the primary mission of CERN is to find the HIGGS fields and the particle that has mass. but where did the first 2 original protons come from that collided to create the universe?
So very good video.. Wr z part 2 and the rest??

neutron = proton + electron + ANTINETRINO.
RiiseRazvan 8 months ago
@RiiseRazvan hey, does the neutrino have mass, and if so, what is the speed it travels at?
jeebersjumpincryst 7 months ago
@jeebersjumpincryst
yes, the neutrino has mass but is very light. It is much lighter than the electron. The neutrino travels close to the speed of light. There are three types of neutrinos: electron neutrinos, muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos.

1. Odd, racist or otherwise offensive nickname
2. No original uploads
3. No uplifting or positive comments
4. Rare or no direct answers to questions
5. Gratuitous foul language
6. Generally provocative, aggravating, ignorant comments

I feel sorry to all of you guys, since one day you all will realize that particles does not exist, nor the mass, it's just a feeling only .This is my question, take Hitler of Germany when he died his body contained lots of so called particles and those particles decayed into nature but not destroyed,as per your conservation theory, lets assume one of that particle went into an apple and you ate that, then the particle is in your body now, are you the HITLER?Learn Buddhism for the answer
dhk1978 10 months ago
I came back to this video, and found a slight mistake, 5:27.
U-235 cannot undergo beta decay. U-238 can very rarely undergo 2 simultaneous beta decays, but not U-235.
Also, I believe the neutron is converted into a proton inside the nucleus: otherwise, it would be neutron emission, which is entirely different.

This entirely overlooks two crucial facts:
SpaceTime4D 1 year ago 2
@SpaceTime4D Okay, I watched to the end of the video, and at least they mention "creating new particle" and add a "To Be Continued..." I can't wait for the sequel, and I hope it includes the second and third generation.

a quark isnt a molecule its an elementary (or fundamental) particle. as a side note if we discover gravity is particulate, this will eradicate the need for the higgs boson, as the graviton would give particles mass.
saradennett1 1 year ago
@saradennett1
But what if gravity is a massive field in the sense that the graviton itself is massive? And there are a lot of other approaches who do not need the Higgs btw. The problem with the graviton is that it is a tensorial field.
VannevarBush 1 year ago
No, the current theory indicates that the graviton must be massless.
Yes, the theory could be completely wrong, but then the Higgs boson would not be so important anyway.
AlienPositron 1 year ago
@AlienPositron
Which current theory are you referring to? general relativity?
And how does it indicate that?
VannevarBush 1 year ago
No, general and special relativity deal with the very large.
The Higgs is the subject of Quantum Mechanics.
As for how it indicates that, lots of math.
Lots and LOTS of math. ;)
AlienPositron 1 year ago
@AlienPositron
Dear fermion from outer space,
I thought we were talking about the graviton. As far as I know there is no valid quatum theory of gravitation. But if you refer to QFT ... there is a rather sloppy use of math anyway in it. I am not afraid of math anyway.
Regarding the Higgs I guess there are interesting approaches like MSSM or Technicolor.
VannevarBush 1 year ago
We were talking about both. The reason the Higgs has been postulated is to give particles mass. You suggested that perhaps the graviton has mass.
However, under the current theory, the graviton has been proven to be massless - the proof of which cannot be adequately reproduced here.
AlienPositron 1 year ago
@AlienPositron
Okay, okay.. I see. So we talked about the same thing. You mean that quantum field theory suggests that gravitons are massless, right?
VannevarBush 1 year ago
@VannevarBush
Mass does not exist brother, nor the particles.
dhk1978 10 months ago
@AlienPositron A Universe with a massive graviton would be a Universe in which the force of gravity traveled slower than light. I can only imagine what strange repercussions that might have. (That's rhetorical. Actually... I can't.) It's easy to get caught up in talking about abstract quantum particles, and forget what macro-world effects might result from careless assumptions about the range of freedom of their various quantum numbers. Mass being a particularly sensitive knob.
sbergman27 11 months ago
Not necessarily. But I was never arguing for a massive graviton in the first place.
AlienPositron 11 months ago
@AlienPositron

77syzygy 1 year ago
@77syzygy

Very good video, however:
1) Uranium 235 decays by ALPHA radiation (emitting 2 protons and 2 neutrons - i.e a helium nucleus / alpha particle)
2) Beta minus decay (which is what seems to be being described here) is where a neutron is converted into a proton, emitting an electron and an ANTIneutrino.
The neutron does not 'fall off' the nucleus.
I suppose this wouldn't affect the layman, but anyone with a pre-existing understanding would be completely confused.
