@firefoolproductions No, he didn't, dear. He wasn't allowed to. Which is probably why this talented, complex man died at a relatively young age of a heart attack. Like other gay performers of his era Paul was forced to stay in the closet not just to protect his career but to keep from being arrested or run out of town--even though his gayness was an industry open secret. I'm sure he would have loved-- just once, at least --to shout it from the rooftops.
30 yrs ago yes he got away with what he said ,but if Hollywood Squares was on today and if Paul Lynde was alive today as well, and had said some of this sh.. today every organization out there would be offended and want the show off the air.
When I was a sailor nearly 40 years ago, one of my shipmates proudly noted from his civilian life experience, "I know that guy, Paul Lynde. I repaired his sliding door." He meant that literally. Pretty sure that Paul would have preferred him figuratively.
@BlondeBardie Roger was actually patterned from Paul Lynde as a kind of "tribute" by the writers... Strangely, Paul patterned himself after another comedian (female) named Alice Ghostly.
@GooglFascists Frank DeCaro and Bruce Vilanch are both long-time well-known entertainers and gay activists, your unfamiliarity with them notwithstanding. They--especially Vilanch, who's been a Hollywood fixture for a long time, and was himself on the Hollywood Squares for four years--are sensible choice for inclusion in a retrospective like this. I don't know the guy between them, whose name wasn't given during the clip, but I'm supposing he was also a sensible selection.
Thanks for the upload--brings back all sorts of memories.

All those gay jokes went right over my head when I was little, but his biting humor was classic. Don Rickles dumbed down - it wasn't personal.
