@redxpen There won't be a problem on assembly lube pressing out. On other notes just thought I'd say on the bottom 'springy' oil ring make sure it doesnt overlap itself. It can happen easily and if you are attempting this, check it before installing piston.
why the hell are you putting like a shot of lube on each rod bearing? you're not gunna get a good crush between the rod and cap if its trying to squeeze jizz out. is it because you're a simpleton?
ok so i have a question. my friend built his 350 by his self and hes no more of a mechanic than a football player is. i heard somrthing about haveing to keep all the end caps and main caps and rods with the lifters. i asked him about that and he said he didnt keep non of the parts together and hes got 1500 miles on the motor. how come has his motor not blown yet? oh and one of his lifters started to collaspe at 500 miles but he changed the oil and it poped back up he said.
@camaroificationable in mass production engines gaps are within a certain tolerance. e.g. .007-.010". You keep the matching parts together because parts have a wear pattern after so long. But if you start mixing random caps together this could alter the tolerance/clearance of the cap that was originally machined for. Add a cap with a larger clearance and it could push your clearance out to .012 which puts it out of tolerance. The engine will still run but that bearing will wear prematurely.
@FABRIC8TIONUNLIMITE1 Ive always felt the same but it has been proven that Plasti-gauge is just as accurate as a micrometer. Its also cheaper than a mic which when you cant afford a mic or telscoping gauge set is the way to go. But Ill always trust my mic first haha :D
he didnt say if you have the caps all facing the same way it will hurt the oil flow, so make all your ring gaps opposite of each other or facing different ways
why you don't want it not to be tang to tang.... cuz if it isn't tang to tang, in a lot of cases (trust me I did it on accident when I went to turn the crank to put more pistons in) it will bind up and lock and you'd be thinking what the hell man? well... it won't turn for ANYTHING!
There's a problem with installing without checking ring end gap. If the gap is too close the rings will expand and make contact. It looks like your using Hyper-eutectic pistons, Mine came with a formula you used for the gap. My machinest had to do calculations for what that gap needs to be.
there is a tool you can use to istall the rings, it seperates them so you can slide them in place which is way easier than like he was doing by hand, but the tools just to make installation of each ring easier :)
@ratrace2p51 no these are classic shop idiots who think they know everything they pretty much tell you to putt the piston in dry just a little on the cylinder none on the piston or insert tool this is a hack job
@evilperson86u I agree 100%. Plus the rings need to be oiled up good and the pistons before you drive them in. To prevent friction on start up. And also to keep rings from sticking. These cats put this engine up dry as shit.
hey guys im gonna build a 383 and i starded to makesome research a some people have said that on a 383 u need a 4 bolt main because of the flex on the crank so just wanna know if it matters if its 4 bolt or 2
@kevinpl17 i was told that a 4 bolt is weaker than a 2 boilt my dad built a 383 whith like 13:1 comprestion and he used 2 bolt, something about the extra holes are more likely to crack

lil note: put ring separation every 120 degree so like that you sure that no oil come in the combustion chamber *

Pressed in pins holding the piston is the better design.Problem with the them clips holding the pin in is they can come out and ruin the cylinder
wafrederick 2 weeks ago
compression would be equal on the piston, when both valves are closed

mains 1,and no5 you cant mix up there made different than the middle main caps
if the rods and mains, are re sized it wont matter ,but you keep the same caps on each because they are worn together

I wouldnt use plastiguage to put a lawn mower engine together. Micrometers are a real engine builders best friend.

It's better to have the top rings 180 degree's away from each other, because your keeping compression in the cylinder better.

a 4 bolt 400 block is weaker than a 2 bolt 400 block. 4 bolt 350 blocks on the other hand are not prone to the infamous cracked main like 400 4 bolt.

I have to do that with my Renault Laguna 1.9DCi because is lack of compression in second cylinder, only18bars :( .
