Music education =/= being a musician. John is technically pop, deal with it having that title. You can go as far to say it's Pop Rock, Soft Rock, Acoustic Rock. It doesn't change how his music sounds. Judging music on a title of the genre is dumb.

He's more of a pop musician that plays guitar than a serious guitar virtuoso. Nothing wrong with that. It's just that you can't mention his name with the guitar greats.

Not true. Mayer's a serious "guitar virtuoso" as you put it. John Mayer's an excellent guitarist and a graduate from Berklee School of Music. His music may be pop, but don't be so quick to categorize him as a "pop musician.'

maybe to you and all other John Mayers fans who cant stand to see him take criticsm.. but hes no virtuoso.. whatsoever.. its guitar players who dont have a 1/100 of the popularity he does that will play him through the roof. I tried to open my mind to him and listened to alot of his playing and its basic at best. Licks that are not even worth learning. If Mayer is a virtuoso then I dont see why Im not. LLS. Dont see whats virtuosic about basic blues and r n b licks on just about every song.

Uhm, John Mayer is a pop/blues artist, I don't see the reason why he would ever need to be virtouso when it doesn't fit with his lyrics, personality, energy or anything else. Catchy guitar licks and heavy metal thunder solos in all it's glory, but that's not why one listens to JM. I look up to John Mayer as much as I look up to Satch or Vai, they're all great guitar players and they all influence me.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Yea, John's more mainstream music is definately poppy, but the trio's music and less popular stuff are deff not. and about his guitar"ing", it doesnt really matter the difficulty when he has so much "feel" in his music. Songs may be considered easy but his music is badass and he is a very good on-spot soloist
