  • Here is a pretty extensive list of extra open source software to look into, this list is 4 comments long, so bare with me.

Kompozer is a WYSIWYG web development platform. It isn't quite on the same level as Dreamweaver, but it is an open source option.

To go with that you should probably have a good text editor like Notepad++. Notepad++ features tabs to edit mutliple documents at once and syntax highlighting for several different programming and scripting languages.

  • Thanks for sharing. I use a lot of those programs myself but didn't discover some of them until after making this making this video - been meaning to make an updated version.

  • Ardour may not have a Windows port, but it does run on Linux and Mac OS X. If you edit music, it might be worth downloading a bootable Linux disc just to use this. This is as close as you can get to an open source Pro Tools.

LibreOffice was created by the original OpenOffice team after they left Oracle (who bought them out). LibreOffice goes a step further than OpenOffice supporting even the newest Microsoft Office file types. If you use OpenOffice, this is basically an upgrade.

  • Inkscape was created to be an open source Illustrator and for a large portion of it's life it was just about identical.

Scribus is a desktop publishing program similar to InDesign. Accepting files from Inkscape and the GIMP, it gets around the GIMPs glaring lack of CMYK support.

Blender is a formerly commercial 3D modeling and animation suite, now completely open source. It now includes physics and game engines, so you can also pump out games if you choose to do so.

  • ClamWin, based on KlamAV, is the Windows port of the antivirus software that most servers run. It's lightweight and accurate.

Lightworks, the professional video editing suite used to edit films like 28 Days Later, The Departed and Good Will Hunting, has been open sourced. It currently runs only on Windows, though in Q4 it is set to go multiplatform.

The GIMP is an open source image manipulation software very comparable to Photoshop. Any missing features can be added through the use of plugins.

  • I Take That Back... I'm Gonna Save Up For Vegas...

  • Hey, why not have both since one is free? =P

I also have another video up about other editing software for video, audio and photo editing that includes those that cost and those that are free. =)

  • Thx! The Magix Could Come In Handy For My Roblox Videos! =D

  • Yeah, it is right now. =)

Probably better than some you find for Linux/Ubuntu and I use Linux/Ubuntu every so often. XD

  • Actually, no. I probably should've but I'm so used to Sony Vegas Pro as a standard for my videos and had limited knowledge of MAGIX at the time. ^.^

  • This might be a stupid Q, but do you know of any applications that can capture and record your desktop plus any menus and also track your cursor. I've been using Fraps and realized that the application can't record your desktop and only sometimes records your cursor.

  • Camtasia Studio/Recorder, Camstudio and Fraps (all in this video).

You need to make sure that you select "Monitor Aero Desktop (DWM) in Fraps if you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7. If you're still using XP then Camstudio or Camtasia would be your best bet. =)

  • @LordReserei01 Yeah thanx man, lol I've had Fraps for ages and I guess I didn't know really what that option was doing lol, thank you a lot. XD

  • No problem, was glad to help. I actually used Fraps for recording some parts of this video and Camtasia for other parts. =)

  • was glad to help. =)

  • tweaknow also a good free program

  • Excellent thanks!

  • No problem, glad I could help. =)

  • Avast Free Antivirus is Freeware.

  • Avast Free Antivirus is limited in functionality compared to Pro and Internet Security so can be considered more as free software.

In order to be considered as freeware, the software in question must be no cost and fully functional with no limitations/disabled features that gives permission to download and distribute freely as long as it's non-profit. A better example of "freeware" would be CCleaner or Defraggler since they fall under the criteria.

  • @LordReserei01 But MSE requires a Genuine Windows OS to work upon. :?

  • Not necessarily a genuine copy of Windows...just that it passes the WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) validation process one way or another. Even pirated copies of Windows whether it be XP, Vista or 7 use cracks that bypass the WGA and make Microsoft sites or software that require validation believe the OS is genuine.

When I had XP, a trojan messed with my WGA and made Windows think my genuine key was pirated when it wasn't, so I googled "WGA tool crack" which reactivated it.

  • Tysm again for an amazing video! Keep it upp amigo! =D

  • thanks. =)

  • Not every program in your list is open source? They are free, but now open source...

  • It's more or less a mix of free and open source. Not every piece of software listed is open source, but there are a few like Audacity, VirtualBox, VLC Media Player...the rest can be considered freeware

  • You make awesome video's everytime

    keep it up :D

  • Thanks. =)

  • nice vid :D

  • Thanks. =)

  • Programs Imma go get now

    -PCWizard 2010

Maybe MAGIX editting software but I already have Pinnacle studio HD 14 is this MAGIX worth getting if I already have this.

    and yes very useful

  • I've never used Pinnacle Studio HD 14 so I can't make a comparison but MAGIX is definitely worth checking out. If you don't like it, you can just uninstall it.

I'm debating on whether to make a video/review of it soon, going over the features and such in more detail. If that's what you would like before making the decision to install then I will gladly. =)

  • @LordReserei01 Yeah man that would be cool, but I'm guessing Sony Vegas Pro is the program you used to make you awesome little intro thing right?

(I had Vegas but i'm not good with it so I unistalled it)

  • Yes, I use Sony Vegas Pro for all of my videos including intros and such. =)

  • @LordReserei01 Yeah I could tell all those cool intro's transition video positions and stuff couldn't be produce by any freeware.

  • good video mate!

  • Thanks, hope you found it useful. =)

  • @LordReserei01I did :) I am going to check out that video editor it looks a little like Adobe Premiere.
