This is such great footage i can't get enough of this stuff from one of my favorite bands at their primes!! Does anyone know if there is any audio recording of this show anywhere?? I think this is one of the best sounding performances of them doing stagnation i've ever heard!! So would love to get my hands on this recording :) rock on genesis fans
I went to 3 of their concerts at the beginning of the 70s, I was just a teenager. Their standards live were very very high. They were also friendly people (they weren't superstars at the time, ok): I was lucky enough to be introduced to them by a common friend. Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins were the nicest, as they are very gregarious. I was also very impressed by Peter's sense of humour, you could tell he was a very bright man. But the other 3, though quieter, were nice blokes as well.
"We actually like our audiences to listen to us...." GREAT LINE!! Sadly ironic how very difficult it is for a band to demand that the audience meet them 1/2 way and actively LISTEN to what they're playing... Evolution doesn't always go in a forward direction...
This actually isn't the first live footage of them ever recorded - there is footage of them performing with their first guitarist, Anthony Phillips, and one of their drummers before Phil (I don't know which one) on YouTube (Atomic Sunrise Festival, I think?). But, this footage is much, much better. I love when Phil laughs at Mike after he talks - he was the stress-reliever in the group, and that's a prime example that isn't often seen. Thanks for putting this together. :)
"We like audiences who sit down and listen, rather than get drunk.." That´s music guys, to enjoy it you just have to sit down and listen...so easy, so difficult nowadays...
I think this is from the Nursery Cryme tour because Foxtrot was released later in the year and also because Happy the Man and Stagnation were both part of the setlist.
We saw them about six months after this footage was shot at Worthing, West Sussex. Tickets 60p.
A friend and myself chatted to Peter Gabriel outside the venue thinking he was one of the audience - the most stunning man we'd ever seen. Suddenly he was on stage - the rest is history AND he still owes me sixpence for the phone booth !
by far the best version of this vid I've seen, thanks for posting it.
Ahh....Stagnation, my favorite pre-Collins/pre-Hackett song. For some reason, as someone who spends a lot of time beside ponds fishing, this verse gives me the willies (in a very good way):
I like the live boots of Genesis during this period. Collins gives the songs a much needed extra boost. Bill Bruford did the same for them a few years later whereas Collins turned into a David Foster type.
I have the 'I Know What I Like' book by Armando Gallo, and it doesn't say when the change occurred, but judging on photos and this clip, the new look and haircut seemed to occur in Apr 72 when on tour in Italy, if not, on a date close by. Being a Genesis geek, Pete's look was not shown to a large UK crowd 'til the Lincoln Fest on 28th May '72. There doesn't seem to be an actual live concert clip of Genesis before the posted, though I wish there was! The earlier Pop Shop on TV is live tho (Jan '72)
This is not the earliest footage of Genesis, because Peter is already wearing his famous "anti-mohawk" haircut and strange make-up here. The Belgian TV show also uploaded to Youtube is earlier, there Peter is wearing normal haircut and no special make-up.
Wonderful footage. Thank-you very much for uploading. Tony Banks appeared to be sleepy in the interview session and I didn't know that Steve Hackett helped Peter Gabriel in the make-up session.
thank you very much for this one...it was a very important moment for all of us. My sister Marina was there...i was only ten and my first album was King Crimson...oh God i wish a can go back...just for a day
Holy crap!!! Stagnation! One of the most underrated Genesis songs. And a bit of "Happy the Man" at the beginning. Never thought I'd see video footage of either of those tunes. Thanks a million for this one.
I read of a Genesis interview where Peter is asked where the creativity comes from and he replies: I comes from the soles. He then takes his shoe off and drums on the sole. Does ANYBODY know where I can find a video of this? I searched for it but I couldn't find it. *sigh* I would totally love to see it..
Many funs of the genesis in italy from their beginning, and some great music in Italy in the seventiees, try to listen: Impressioni di settembre;Sanremo 72 delirium; Claudio Lolli 1 and many others
Yes, you are right. I have read about that. I think it is because the Italians love classical music and the kind of music Genesis were making during the early days was very close to it.

peter was either refering to the amount of times the band get together with an idea for a song put down by phil or the amount of times peter and his wife do it as peter had some sort of sexual personality that shown through in his stories and songs hope this answers your question ;-) i know genesis like the back of my hand
I think it was the answer to the question about how many times a week do they get together to write. Funny how Pete seemed caught off guard by the question, as he was fixing his hair. This will be a DVD bonus on the upcoming Foxtrot reissue
cheers for the reply and yeah your probaly right i acctually have this gig on cd it doesn't quite fit the video but still is great and about the foxtrot video reissue sure it wouldn't be nursery cryme as most of the songs from this gig would come from that album and do you know what other videos will come out with the reissues i already know about the later ones with phil collins thanks genesis are the best ;-)
An absolute delight watching and listening. Simply impressing, this is the most memorable Genesis footage clip reworked I've seen in a long time!.
Anyone who has seen this priceless archive footage is familiarized with that version with Italian language spoken. Now, for a couple of minutes, we can see and HEAR the band in those cult-status days (intentionally pretented to be forgotten and buried by some...)
