It's amazing how few families will bridge the gap in communication between speech and sign. Many insist that someone has to learn sign or has to learn how to speak but won't learn the other. We have a hard of hearing child. Would I say CI's are the way to go? Not always. The long term effects of a CI are unknown and more technology is being developed that those who choose a CI now will not be able to participate in which actually might restore natural hearing. It's a risk either way.
I don't think Peter's mom understands, still after all this time; it's not a disability to be deaf, it's just a little tiny bit more difficult when hearing is the default culture. It's an advantage in many ways to be deaf because you don't have to hear ignorant, annoying fools.
@lizichell2 You have to understand that in a quick moving world if you can't communicate with the rest of the population your a roadblock. Don't mean to offend anyone but it is the truth.
I think the grandmother's dedication to ensure these children join the hearing community is wonderful and couragous against the agressive agenda-pushing luddites who want to create a divide between the 'hearing and deaf worlds'.
@lizichell2 You have to consider that it was the hearing world that made the divide in the first place. I cannot blame Deaf people for being frustrated and wary of CI's.
