Lt. Gov. Maddox speaks first. His speaking ends with "Along comes Lt. Calley", followed by applause. After the applause, it is Gov. George Wallace (Alabama) speaking.
I was the last confidant and close friend of Gov. Lester Maddox during the final four years that he lived. . . from May 1999 through his death in 2003. Yes, that is his voice on the tape. He was Governor from 1967-1971, then Lt. Governor from 1971-1975. Gov. Maddox was highly intelligent, deeply religious, pure in principle, and very much misunderstood. Not so much the racist, though he was a segregationist, he was a strong proponent of the rights of private property.
He felt a business owner had the right to choose his customers just as a homeowner could choose who came into his home. Too bad he so enjoyed attention and being in the limelight. This made him a lightening rod for controversy. As a lover of history, it was a thrill to chauffeur him to family & political events those last four years of his life.
I never let him know that I was a former hippie who once demonstrated with my fellow students in 1968-1972. He would have buried me under the jail if he knew that. I miss him.
Thanks for posting this. It's a rich and altogether historical experience for someone born well after the Viet Nam era. I was listening to Randy Newman's song "Rednecks," which speaks of Mr. Maddox in terms different than you might expect, and I wanted to know more about this notorious figure. I could not have expected this. Really wild that you wound up with his reel-to-reel! I can't help but wonder whether it cost much.
these machines were great old workdogs i had one handed down to me from my sister in law, un fortunately i dont own it anymore.but itwas pretty much the exact same one,i used to love to watch the old brown indicator lights, they refered to them as "Indian Lights",back then, great piece of machinery
