  • A truly, profoundly deaf person can never truly hear anymore than a blind person can see. No amount of technology can provide the richness of true sound. Does anyone consider whether the child would prefer sign or speech? Signing is the natural language of the deaf as speech is for the hearing. If you are a hearing parent of a deaf child don't you owe it to them teach them sign and learn it for yourself? It's a beautiful and rich language full of things mere words cannot express.

  • Great vid. This does not put down sign language or being deaf at all. This just paves the way for one option of schooling for deaf of HOH child In a world where the majority of people speak orally, it is not wrong to give your child that opportunity if possible. (And music therapy... they love it) They can sign at home if that's the preference. Being Deaf or oral... both fine choices for which success depends on child AND family. So leave it up to families to decide which way is best for them.

  • I believe in a solid balance of auditory exposure, Deaf Culture exposure and in the value of ASL, ESL, and lipreading and oral learning depending on the needs of the child and family. I believe that TOTAL COMMUNICATION is the best overall method. No method is superior and each parent's and child's needs and choices must be respected. WE ARE ALL UNIQUE AND ALL SO CAPABLE OF ANYTHING!!!

  • I am very glad they showed so much of the music therapy sessions. Often music is ignored as an intervention with these great kids. I'm Australian but went to visit this school to see their music therapy when I was in NY for a holiday, and it was so amazing. Jenny is so great with the kids. I'm a music therapist and would love to set up a similar programt here.

  • I have a Profound hearing loss in my Left Ear & a severe hearing loss in my Right Ear & wear Binaural BTE Hearing Aids & I can speak pretty well so people don't even notice I have a hearing loss but I also relay a lot on lip reading.

  • They talk like deafness and sign language is a bad thing. They aren't helping. They're trying to cure the kids of something that isn't wrong with them. Audism is horrible..

  • This video is ment for the hearing family's. Where are the cations??? I hope every kid still learns ASL and their new deaf/culture so they know who they truly are. I totally agree with Tyiranie's comment. I am a CODA and understand both points of views hearing and Deaf. And this video is a hearing point of view. You know when that child grows up without a deaf social network they will feel like they are missing something deep inside. i bet most children admitted have hearing folks.

  • I am hard of hearing severe in left ear and severe-profound in right ear. I talk pretty normal you would never know that I have hearing loss. I have a video on youtube showing my hearing aids so feel free to check it out :)

  • I think deaf and hard of hearing children choice use communicate speak and sign language .. look like they learn oral like past time .

  • Deaf People have the choice to use their voices to speak or use their hands to sign. It is an individual to speak or sign. I went to an oral deaf school and was mainstreamed by first grade. I kept up with my hearing peers accademically back in the 50's.

  • and yet i think about over half when see sign and exposed will learn sign. sign is best and oral ok but keep sign.

  • Wow. Could the song be any more offensive to deaf people without an implant?

  • @Tyiranie Mh, my thoughts exactly. I think HOH children should be exposed to both the oral/auditory world as well as the Deaf world, not just one or the other. Maybe that way that little girl would see that it might be just as great to be able to sign and get along in the world without hearing/speaking. Sure, being oral is good, too, but nothing is wrong with being Deaf.
