  • @donecert These songs are about Andreas Lentakis!

  • @donecert Confused the names,good songs anyway,greetings from Finland ^^

  • He is a lion like me.I admire you very much for your music and for your resistence against dictature.VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY DEAR MIKIS.

  • Brothers and Sisters-

On July 29, 2010 Mikis Theodorakis will observe his 85th Birthday.

PLEASE--On That Date? SIGN the guest book at: his home site

AND wish him, "The Father of Composers" A Happy Birthday!

    Don as "Tauno"

  • I have the complete concert from 1974 in Athens on DVD - and everytime I feel down I hear this DVD - and I am back again!

  • [Part 1]

At noon they are beating [you] up in the office

I count the beatings, the blood I count

I am a fatling, shut in a slaughterhouse

    today your turn tomorrow mine

  • My first post was part 3 , this is part 2

In the evening they are beating Andreas up in the terrace

I count the beatings, the pain I count

behind the wall we shall keep each other company again

tack tack from you tack tack from me

  • [Part 2]

Which means, in this mute language

I am holding strong I am holding on

In our hearts the festival begins

tack tack from you tack tack from me

    our slaughterhouse smelt of thyme

and our cell of a red sky

  • could somebody write the lyrics of "To Mesimeri" please???

  • It`s "To Sfagio"(The Slaughterhouse) and it probably refers to the suffering they(himself,Andreas and the others) sufferd in Oropos( a political prison),but I can`t say for sure cos` I don`t know greek and I`m not greek,I`m Romanian...anyway, here are the lyrics.

  • ψευτικη δοξα σου ταζουν οι ψευτες !

  • γειά σου Μίκη!

  • I really regret I don't speak Greek, I would have liked to understand the words. I can feel the message, but it's almost frustrating. I love Theodorakis! Simply GREAT!

  • For that reason I´ve started a course online of modern greek: I want to understand Theodorakis, Dalaras, Farantouri, etc.

  • Great!!!

  • that is not important. The important is the goose bumps you get when you listen to his songs. Everything else is dust.

  • Αντρεα ζεις, εσυ μας οδηγεις!

  • The song is for Andreas Ledakis, not Papandreou you moron!

  • How sad that I belong to a nation that cannot proudly say " I am a German!.

I know that many of my compatriots just close the eyes-I feel ashamed .

Mikis I apologize for what Germans did to your people. although all of us have always loved Greece and

her wonderful people. All people are brothers and sisters-it is politics that spoils.

    Long live Mikis!!

  • remember Dietrich Bonhoeffer!

  • @mikisforever Very nice comment. And you have nothing to be ashamed for. The Greek patriots during the war knew very well what kind of "german" or "Italians" were harming our people. Most of them didn't diserve at all to call themselves "germans" or "italians". Germany and Italy are two great nations that offered to human civilazation in many ways. Those killers where just a big mistake of history. Instead of vanishing from the face of the earth they rulled your people. Never forget it.

  • I am proud to say: I have a copy of the 1974 concert in Athens - I am from germany but everytime I am sad it gives me so much power to fight on!!!

  • For me also, I live in Filand, but I speak greek.

  • EXCEPTIONNEL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful to hear the great Theodoraki's voice!

  • Fovero!!!!!

  • I like it especialy after 7:20 where the Mikis is so moved that can barely sing and signs to the other singers to be ready to get in! And this is my favorite part because he feels it so much that the words can barely make it out! What makes me miserable though is his audience. When the camera moves to show the audience you realise that although Mikis is so passionate the people at the stadium are like robots soouless and with an expression that tells us that got actually nothing of all that :-(

  • O.K.

  • It's really nice to hear Mikis sing some of his own compositions. His voice is really nice too. You can literally hear the pride and spirit in his singing. Long live Theodorakis.

  • Its really incredible that you , who are not from Greece , can feel and understand things that maybe even some Greeks cant understand :)

    Welldone !

  • This version is better tha original, in 70's. More passional, more tragical feelings. Megali Mikis!!! Athanatos! Hugs from Barcelona!

  • The best:mirise to sfagio mas thimari.

    MEANS;Τhe slaughtery was smelling thyme.

  • I discovered Mikis when my Greek pen pal sent me a tape of his music when I was in high school. (30 years ago--can't believe it was so long ago.) I have loved his music ever since then and even got my husband hooked on his music. Don't understand much Greek but his music goes beyond words, doesn't it? I feel so blessed to have seen a concert of his in Chicago some years back. Thank you, Mikis, for your wonderful contributions to the world!

  • You must have had a wonderful teacher who set you up with your Greek pen pal. Did you know Greek schools and universities close on November 17? This is not Kent State.

    Wish I'd been in Chicago.

Check out Yasoo Radio Delaras for more wonderful Theodorakis stuff. My favourite clips are 10 and 11. But all.

  • Outis, thank you for wonderful posts.

Once again, my sweet courageous citizen of the world, Mikis.

To name a child Mikis is one thing. Benito Moussolini was named after Benito Juarez!

To raise a child Mikis or like him is a worthy goal.

  • This is just SUPERB!

  • second part: You're in pain, I'm in pain, who is most in pain

The time will come to tell us

We are two, we are three, we are a thousand and thirteen,

Time goes by in the rain, the blood dries on the wound the pain abates, the leader frees us.

We are two, we are three, we are a thousand and thirteen

One ahead, one ahead, the others follow

After the silence we shall hear the same old tune.

  • that was really nice, thanks!

Please don´t forget the last part...

  • Thank you for the translation. I love this man. He's fantastic.

  • We are two, we are two, eight o'clock has sounded. Turn out the light, the guard is knocking, they'll come again tonight

They strike twice, three times, a thousand and thirteen times

    continued...

  • woderful man of art, music and courage. One must celebrate life with Mikis music.

  • All commentators are right: he is just divine! Those understanding the lyrics in Greek are short of weeping ...

  • Hi, I'm from Bolivia, I'm a musician and I want to sing some Theodorakis's songs in spanish, I've already heard versions in french, swedish, and catalán. If someone could help me with literally translations in english (spanish of cirse woul be better) it would be very nice. I've tried with greek translaters online, but it doesn't work. I'm beginning with "Imaste dio". If someone could help.... Thank you

  • It's not easy to translate in English, these incredible METAPHORICAL meanings!!AS YOU KNOW THE GREEK LANGUAGE IN WORDS AN MEANINGS!it would not be possible to translate those words in English!!!

  • I suggest you to look up in the "tis agapis emata"and "anigo to stoma mou"and "tis dikeosinis ilios"...there are some translations there,in those songs!

  • There is a good English version of songs for Andreas in his wonderful, inspiring book "Journals of Resistance" pages 192-3. I can't get at a scanner, but when I have a free hour I shall copy them out for you.

  • did you succeed? I want to suggest that you start with songs from Canto General which are in Spanish and are just great!!!

  • Poeta e cantore immortale.
