@MrSadistico its an e-bow, means you can sustain a note indefinitely as its like a violin bow for the electric guitar. have to say i always thought they were magnetic though, but thats probably just my ignorance of them.... so ill stand corrected if its not.

Blame the sound guys, not Billy. His levels are too high in this song. The bootleg of 'There is no God' from their Machina tour is the opposite. James' levels were higher in that recording due to poor sound checking.

u can find it online or at a guitar store. only one company makes them currently although im sure in the coming years more companies will. there are ways to make your own, and you can use the bow of a violine or cello to simulate an e bow but the buy a real EBOW u have to buy it from a particular seller. they cost 100+ dollars but if youre really gonna use it then its worth it

It's called an e-bow. It's held in the hand and a battery driven magnet turns off and on very fast.  This makes the string underneath it vibrate on a constant basis and gives it that violin like sustain you hear. They are about USD100 in europe.

The E-bow creates a regular magnetic field that vibrates the string. The built-in device Aubrey mentioned is called a sustainer, made by a company called Fernandes. It comes standard in most of thier guitars, and you can buy a kit for retrofitting in your guitar, but you'll have to replace a pickup. It does the same thing as an e-bow, but with a couple cool options, like a harmonic fifth mode and volume control.

I think you can get one that actually attatches to a guitar at the top of the neck, and it is called a sustaniac or something. I think matt bellamy has something like it built in, and in theory it should give you unlimited sustain- 'look what I can do with one hand tied behind my back!' :)
