When I was 12 I was hanging out in a grave yard in England around 3am just watching the incredible full moon sitting on one of those broken up above ground burial boxes?...
Then exactly like it was out of a movie a wall of fog came toward the church, only maybe 5 foot tall it slowly rolled across the old flint stone wall and engulfed the grave stones one by one till it came to me...
It was just such an odd & beautiful experience, seemed almost magical if you will
@IronicallyVague that is wunderful.....id love to hang out at a cemetery...its freaky...beautiful..and chilling..just watch your back..you do get some idiots walking around london or anywere these days..nice to meet you....another thing..goths dont just like cemeteries for death..its a peaceful place .just saying
@MultiDoomsday666 - There was no such thing as Goth when I was young & punk rock was the latest craze.. I was just another stupid, loser, weird yank kid who had nothing better to do or nowhere else to go...
But yeah, I don't hang out in graveyards much lol but that experience was very surreal
The people who look after this place have done too much of a clinical job, look at vids of highgate from the 70s and early 80s. Really beautiful and romantic, your mind used to float away!!!
@sjtom57: that's the theme music from the film "Edward Scissorhands". It was written by Danny Elfman. Just thought you should know since you said you liked it.
well they are nice videos and all but i'd be reaaaallll scared to go there at night. even might get shivers in the daytime. this looks like where dracula would hang out.lol
It's exactly where Dracula did hang out in the Hammer House of Horror films (circa mid-60's). They used Highgate as a consistent filming location for Christopher Lee in their various vampire movies.
The music is perfect for this mysterious cemetery. I hope you never take this video off YouTube and never change the music. It would be fun if you (ParVu) or someone else who lives close by High Gate would list the names and maybe a short biography of the people who's remains are entombed in some of the tombs, especially the more elaborate ones. Thanks for a great video!!
I came across a reference to Highgate in Virginia Woolf's "Jacob's Room" and wanted to learn a bit more. The visual montage was better than any history I could have read. Thank you.
If I sound to harsh; I apologize...I just think death is very somber and this tune is unique. I walked through this cemetery and music was playing in my ears by my cd. It was nice but I didn't like paying to get in there; thats not cool
This video is well done. The music does not convey the mood that I prefer when viewing a cemetery. The cemetery needs cleaning up and manicuring. Conditions of a cemetery reflect the local population and their reverence for their dead or lack of.
The video is well done and I like the music choice although it does not encourage the mood that I prefer when looking at a cemetery. When I went to London on holiday from America, this was one of the first places I wished to see. It was eerie, mysterious and beautiful at the same time. I got quite a start from a caretaker who came out of a tomb to greet me. Strangely, her office is IN the tomb!
I asked her if the ...shall we say....permanent residents of the tomb objected. She said, "Not yet."
OMG.. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!! The Cemetery is a walk through time, the music is divine, a great selection. I particularly loved the lady laying on what appeared to be a bed and how you appeared to just peek through. @sjtom57 I dont either. Music is great but they have a tendency to arouse our emotions and inner feelings. big difference with or without music. that is a old cemetery
I used to go there all the time in the 70's when I lived near Highgate...I have a lot of b/w photos from that time....when it was FREE !! Like a wildlife.. park..

The whole metropolis is a cemetery, wherever you walk in London you're walking over the dead. Amazing. But London is amazing. Just a note from Perth, Australia.
beautiful place im dying to visit im from scotland so greyfriars kirkyard is my main place i love take walks in check the vid i made of it on my page its a wee bit like this youl see the diffrence from the styles of the cemetrys with high gate bein victorian and greyfriars stretchin back to medieval times you can see the diffrence in cultures
I visited the cemetery on 17 march 09. You do have to pay to enter the cemetery. It,s £3 to enter the east and £5 for the west. In the west side you are shown round by a guide. Take as many photos as you like excepting the grave of Russian spy Litvinienko who you may remember was murdered with radio active polonium in 2006. The cemetery costs £1000 per day to maintain.
I have seen his grave. He doesn't have a tomb as in the above ground stone type. When I saw the grave it was unmarked except for a photo of the young Litvinienko and some recently tended yellow flowers. He has been buried in a lead coffin. The main reason he is buried at highgate is that there is a fear his grave will be disturbed because he was a controversial figure. He is buried near the tomb of General Sir Loftus Otway. Go Google.
SuZora, u said you have to pay to go in to this cemetary and take pictures? Is that true and how much because my friends and I are going there in a couple of weeks and we were unaware that we would have to pay. I'm sure that must be illegal?
hookers etc in highgate cemetery? What a load of rubbish. The thing that annoys me about this cemetary are the old dears demanding payment on entry and telling you that you have to pay to take pictures. What actual legal right do they have to do this?????
Highgate is owned by private members interest (as oposed to a council-supervised cemetery, which is a public place and the property of same). It follows therefore, that they have the absolute right to charge for photography on their premises; particularly as the cost of running/maintaining the cemetery is steep and expensive; bills have to be paid.
If you saw the amount of work and money it keeps to maintain Highgate cemetery, then perhaps you'd understand the necessity for charging visitors. (By the way, I visited recently and you ARE allowed to take pictures without being charged). The 'Friends of Highgate' have responsibility for upkeep of the cemetery, and if it wasn't for them and the donations, then the place would be in total disrepair.
The full account of the investigation at Highgate Cemetery and beyond can be bought online from Amazon or directly from its publisher Gothic Press. The book's title is "The Highgate Vampire" written by the author and exorcist Seán Manchester. This is a hardcover edition that is generously illustrated throughout with case file photographs taken at the time.
Exquisite photography. It does move a bit fast, I wish youtube had some device by which we could pause a presentation. I live in the US but hope someday to visit Highgate, especially the older section. I'm happy to see the wonderful work that the "Friends" have accomplished. Thanks for posting-
Highgate is a MAGICAL place, I got some really good photos, the guides are full of info and dont mind you taking snaps as long as youre not going to sell them etc. The DeBeers vault is stunning (take a peep inside - it's mesmeric), the whole place is like another world. Sleeping angels, hidden corners, wildlife - and all for a few pounds - the guided tour is priceless.
i was also showed in in the beer vault when i was there the 1 st of january this year the guide say that he normally arent allowed to show visitors the inside of the vault <3

I'm sure that must be illegal?

my friend lives next door to this!

hookers etc in highgate cemetery? What a load of rubbish. The thing that annoys me about this cemetary are the old dears demanding payment on entry and telling you that you have to pay to take pictures. What actual legal right do they have to do this?????
SuZora 2 years ago
they dont have a right...I think thats illegal but since this is in London they probably have different laws

it costs alot to get it looking so over grown and uncared for! They probably have to pay the council not mow and Strim it

@SuZora

Well you will be pleased to note that the Play button (bottom left of video) becomes a 'Pause' button during play. :-)
