@StuckonLand We believe it was a 5000 size and yes it would be great for that purpose. If you can tell us what species you are targeting and where, we can provide the best size for you.
I think you said you are just starting so a 14ft rod will be a lot to handle but you might want to match the specs. of the rod up with the rating for the reel…..and to see how balanced the combo is once you loads the reel with line and put it on the rod….
A 7000 size would be a good fit for you to start. It really varies by angler but you'd probably be happy with that set up.
@MrSaltlife69 A lot of people use between 4000-6000. The 6000 would work but it might be a little big and a 5000 might be easier to cast if you aren't targeting larger species. 20-30lb SpiderWire UltraCast InvisiBraid is a good choice with a 50lb fluorocarbon leader. Your local tackle shop might be able to give you a good recommendation specific to your area, but the note above should help get you where you need.
@CJCFishing The 8000 size will hold 550/50lb, 450/65lb, and 390/80 lb braid. A braid you may want to consider as well is SpiderWire UltraCast Invisibraid
@srreed5 The 4000 would work fine for snook. But for tarpon you might want to step up to a 5000 or 6000. Many people also add a heavier fluocarbon leader to the braid for tarpon fishing.
@PENNfishing Thanks I think ill still go with the 4000 because i like the handle on the reel better and if it can handle snook where i live the tarpon aren't much bigger thank you anyway lots of help.
I've caught a few fish on my new 6000 fierce no problems so far. A far cry form the captive that I am sorry to say was a piece of crap in salt or brackish water.
@trophy2052 Thanks for the note. The Fierce is a big upgrade from the Captiva. We no longer carry the Captiva as we agree this is a far superior product.
What size fierce is that with the white line on it? Would it be good for casting lures?

I was just given a 14ft rod for surf fishing. Which of these penn models should I get. I'm pretty new at this. Thanks in advance.
