We had a Vixen for 13 years. She was rescued by some lads when she was a cub & unfortunately was to socialised with dogs to be returned to the wild. They are ever so friendly & fussy as youngsters but once they are adults, the wildness takes hold of them again & they tend to stereotype (run the same path in their pen). Nobody should criticise you for what you do because it isn't just as easy as that to let them go. Good luck with him.

Actually, they can breed. The russians managed to breed a "cross breed" of dogs and foxes several years back. This new breed, called a "fox dog" is very rare outside Russia, but supposedly a very good hunting dog.
Darkyoda, it's impossible dogs to cross with foxes. Dogs and foxes have different numbers of chromosomes, so nothing matches up and they never even make it to the single-cell stage. What the Russians did was breed many generations of foxes for tameness, and that resulted in flopped ears, short legs, a waggy tail, etc.
The only creature I've heard crossing with a red fox is the arctic fox, but I understand the offspring are usually sterile. YouTuber SpiritWhiteFox2 has 2 red/arctic crosses.
no they kept foxes in kennels to tame them then bred foxes from the wild with the tame ones to get a fox with dog like behavior. there is no such thing as a fox hybrid.
From what I can tell that squeal while held is either a greeting or a "let me lick you" phrase. See other vids of tamed foxes that leap into your arms.

this sounds horrible but im mounting a grey fox like todd and they're just beautiful animals... how did you come across him... as a baby or did you have to buy him... please message me chevy0850
That is horrible! I hope you weren't the one who killed it. :(
But Tod isn't a gray fox. He's a red fox. And there are breeders who sell foxes for companions so I bought one who breeds them near me. :) They're awesome animals.
no i didnt shoot it.... but yeah thats pretty cool that you actually have one... now i want one but not to mount or kill..... but yeah how long is there life span and did you need any special permits to own him???
They live about the same as a dog 10-15 years. I needed a permit but it all depends on where you're from - some states you don't have to have permits.
My Redgi, corgi fox cross (it's hard to beleive but true) makes those noises. And p.s. it is perfectly safe if the animals are trained right and tame.
A video of Redgi? Not yet but I can upload it, he's eight years old so he isn't probably as energetic as he could be anymore, so there isn't a lot of really cute ones but maybe I can throw a toy at him and watch him attack it lol. Redgi is much more corgi than fox though.
I still don't get how fox and dog can cross and produce living offspring! The genetics alone is a nightmare, with dogs having triple the chromosomes of foxes, not to mention the different internal hardware that foxes have over dogs.
It is pretty hard to understand, but that's what he is. We're not going to argue with the vet, some sort of breeder or something found a way. I don't know exactly how to explain, we're his second owners. My puppy's living proof though.
Sorry to burst your bubble but it is impossible for a fox and dog to mix. It's like a dolphin and a dog getting together. They can not have offspring. You are very misled if you think that. Not to be rude or anything, but it's a fact. It's simply impossible due to the different chromosomes. Look it up and see - I would go to a different vet if he/she is the one that told you this. Because it's -impossible.-
That's weird. Redgi looks almost exactly like a fox too. His personality is just like one. Well it was incredibly easy to beleive, you'd understand if you met him.
There is a type of dog that had been bred to look like a fox but I forgot the name of the breed. But he either is a fox, or he's a dog. Trust me. Foxes aren't like regular canines. Their genetic system is completely different than a wolf and coyote that can breed with another dog.
Lol, yes, it worries me that you go to that person since it's pretty common knowledge - at least it should be with someone in his field. Dogs have 78 chromosomes, but red foxes have only 38 chromosomes so they literally just -can't- be a match. He should definitely know that. So I'd be very wary of him and consider going somewhere else.
No kidding... jeez, how stupid. Haha, oh well, I'm happy with a corgi fox-look-alike cross. We only went to him when we first got him to find out all that stuff, so luckily he hasn't experimented with my darling's actual health.
I probably will... I just have to make one of him that isn't him laying sleeping in his bed... or in my bed... and actually involves movement... he's so lazy.
Shiba Inu (not sure about the spelling look like foxes) their from Japan very beautiful dogs. Your fox is beautiful I hope Fox hunting has been banned from all of North America and Europe. Foxes are very important to the environment and should be allowed to live in harmony.
I definitely see the potential for domestication of these animals. The way it can connect with you in a parent-child role is proof of that. It definitely thinks of you as mommy :)
True, I read about the domesticated foxes by the Russian scientists. Foxes (and coyotes) are related to wolves, and dogs come from ancient gray wolves so I'm sure it's easier to domesticate foxes than other wild animals.
He measured tameness while feeding and handling. Beleav and his successor, Lyudmila Trut, repeated the process for 40 years and 45,000 foxes later they have a new breed of docile, eagar to please and are unmistakeably domesticated. Trut (1999)
"Working at the Russian Acadamey of Science's of Cytology Dmitry Belyaev succesfully domesticated foxes; Beleav set to work with 30 male and 100 female foxes. From their offspring he selected and mated the tamest 5 percent of males and 20 percent of females.
hes a cutie :) how long has he been in ur family? I love it when i see people who really do love there pets.. So many people neglect their animals like their nothing..

He's brought in of the day; meanwhile more has been built onto his house so he can sleep in there and if he wishes to come out at night, he has a large fenced in area too.
Oh, you didn't! No hard feelings. A lot of people can be stuck on the issue that wild animals belong in the wild and that's that. A lot of people just don't understand that raised properly, they can be a companion as good as any dog or cat.
Wait'll he grows up more, then Tod's really gonna be a handful. I think you made a good choice with an expanded area, just as long as it's a BIG back yard. Also, don't forget the fence has to extend underground a good ways.
He doesn't like to dig for whatever reason but the fence has wire down on the bottom so he can't and the top. He's really not a hand full, and the first year is supposed to be their worse, but I think it's because I love foxes too much. :)
You're taking excellent care of you fox! But also, no foxes are "domesticated" as of yet. But some people tend to base their feelings on Disney movies. Oh well, the fox and the hound is a great movie!
Well, he's domesticated as in he's not going to growl/attack/run away without reason. :) He's as good as a companion can get. In my opinion anyway. ^_^
Famous last words.... Still, exercise caution. It's still a wild animal on the inside, and can attack. Even trained elephants, lions, tigers. etc have turned on their trainers. (Seigfried and Roy is a notable tragedy)
He's a fox, same size as your average house cat. Even if he did "attack", he can't do much damage. He won't do anything without reason tho. Domesticated foxes will nip/bite if they are annoyed, want to be left alone, but usually not hard enough to seriously harm you. You can expect as much from some dogs. Lot of people see "wild" animals as just "wild" though and Tod is definitely not the case. Trust me, I've raised foxes before. :)
Yes, I know, but did you hear about the couple that raised an ape from birth? And then it suddenly turned on them and killed the husband and seriously injured his wife? I know your fox isn't capable of that, but still, it's teeth could do some pretty serious damage. Plus, foxes are susceptible to rabies. A little caution never hurts. Thank you for your advice, I know you're just trying to help. :) Oh, and no, I haven't heard that. o_o That's a horrible story. But I assure you, Tod isn't likely to do anything unless in his mind there's a reason for it. Which is why I am careful with him and know how to treat him. Foxes are as susceptible to rabies as your dog. So I'm really not worried about it. When they are bitten and get rabies they will die within 10 days of it. And it's quite evident if an animal does have it.
True. I know how dangerous animals can be (having grown up with numerous dogs/cats/ferret/rabbit/lizards/birds) and I work with monkeys at an animal research facility, and they often go from friendly to wanting to tear your hands off in the blink of an eye, and with the diseases some of them have, that can be bad.
