I <3 Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and have some rl friends who do as well. Sadly, I haven't found any large on-line communities for this particular fandom. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places?
I love this idea of Mega-Undergrounds. No one IRL (at least in my IRL) really understands social media. I totally agree that it is a fantastic way to get news and push for change. I'm going to look into reading/finding out more about the idea of mega-undergrounds :) Thanks for sharing!
The Hunger Games are great! Can't wait to hear what you think about the storyline and the world that Collins created. Also Buffy is great. I'm not a huge fan of the 1st season, but I promise it gets better!!
Ok, so I was going to post some smart comment about mega-undergrounds, but all I can think is: How the hell have you not read the Hunger Games yet? Have you told me this before? Well no matter what, you have to read all of them ASAP!
@penguin112493 Pretty sure I've told you before. I imagine you had a similar reaction to when I told you I'd never seen AVPM (still haven't) or read anything my Maureen Johnson that's longer than 140 characters (still haven't).
I've watched up through half of season 4 of Buffy, and I've read the Hunger Games more than once. I also love Doctor Who, True Blood, Stargate SG1/Atlantis, and Merlin. :)
@TheyCalledMeHunter I'm in the mountains of northern New Mexico so it's pretty cold and snowy for most of the year even though the rest of New Mexico tends to be quite hot.
It's amazing that social media can lead to revolutions that topple governments. But by far and away, the more meaningful social change comes through changes in the collective heart of society - and transcends governments and national borders. It is in this way that the HPA and other mega-underground organizations (disorganizations?) can alter the course of history. Go HPA!
I think our communities can be as powerful, but we have to bring that same kind of motivation - when you look at the Arab Spring, people were fighting for their lives and their own freedom. That made them incredibly passionate. We have to bring that same dedication and passion to our "mega-undergrounds" if we are going to create the same kind of change. It's certainly possible but it won't be easy. (and I've read the Hunger Games! but never seen Buffy eep!!)
@SkyelinePigeon Yeah exactly. I don't want anyone to think that what we're doing is as important as the revolutions for peoples' own lives and freedom, but, in some cases, we are fighting FOR those same peoples' lives, freedom, etc. Mostly I think it's inspiring to see what we COULD do with how we're already interacting with each other.
BUFFY!!! SQUEE!!! I absolutely love Buffy. I am in absolute nerdlove with the Buffyverse and wish that I could live in Sunnydale. You will get hooked. Joss Whedon is an absolute genius! Enjoy them!
i think i almost had an aneurysm when you said what that article was about.... last semester i spent nearly all of my school-ish time was spent researching that exact topic without a lot of luck, and that would have helped me immensely if it had existed 2 months ago...
I love anything Joss Wheadon related....so you're in good hands with Buffy. Hunger game is also spectacular. Thanks for the inspiring video! This really is validating.
I want to watch Buffy and Doctor Who really badly, but I had to blacklist Doctor Who on Tumblr to avoid all the spoilers.
Ah, I love the Hunger Games. The only bad thing is that sentences can get really choppy. My classmate described it as "reading a Magic Tree House Book" because of that.
2.) I am part of the Hunger Games fandom. I think you'll like this series a lot. :3 I promise no spoilers, buut once you finish them I can't wait to see you fangirl about it. xD
The Hunger Games. They are amazing! Read all three of them before the movie comes out, just in case the movie ruins it for you. In regards to the HPA pulling off riots or protests internationally, I can't really see that, simply because we don't have a major reason to. There's no dictator we all live under or anything. I could, however, see us leading a very large boycott on Warner Brothers due to the Not in Harry's Name Campaign.
@TheHiguy1234 Yep, that's why I'm reading them now (and it may or may not be HPA related *ahem* what?).
I don't think the HPA has any reason to start riots or anything either, but I do think the HPA or these fandoms in general certainly have the power to revolutionize certain issues or ways of thinking in the world. We have done and will do some pretty huge things and it's just cool to see the power of online driven communities accurately recognized.
I am a part of both! You're going to love them! And this whole business with social media is really, truly inspiring. It kind of makes me think we're not as small and non-influential as mass media wants us to believe we are. And that gives me hope for the future =]
I remember watching Buffy off and on, and I too have just started Hunger Games. My partner read all 3 in like 3 days and for her that is fast. She says they rocked.
Awesome video! Try as my parents, teachers and (dare I generalise?) more mainstream friends might, they never seem to understand social media and its power, and its ability to give us the chance to connect. This video explains it really well, but I've never been able to find something that truly expresses how I see it and feel about it.
@HM909 I have the same problem. This video barely touched the surface on how I feel about the power of social media --- something I'm still struggling to fully articulate and get across to people. Definitely read the article. It has a lot of other points that might help you get closer to your own explanation.
Buffy! God, I got my boyfriend into that last year-and he watched all seven seasons-then all five seasons of angel (oh, and read all the comics) in a year. It's seriously addictive. Say goodbye to your social life!
The Hunger Games is amazing! Be prepared for some pretty dark material though, especially the last books. They always make me want to go out and change the world.
Mega-Underground, I like the sound of that! I just read the Hunger Games last week so I am just as crazy about them as only a fangirl with a new obsession can be. I can hardly wait until the movie comes out!!
I never watched it when I was younger, but thanks to a friend sending me her Season 1, I started watching Buffy over the last few years. I'm now on Season 4, but I'm trying to catch up with Season 1 of Angel, because I didn't realize how deeply the shows were intertwined. At least for Season 4/Season 1. Anyways, I'm totally loving it. Haven't tried the Hunger Games, and I already have tons of books piled up.
Not sure if I'm a part of the "mega-undergrounds" but I'm a huge fan of BTVS and (only just recently) The Hunger Games. I've been a follower of the HPA on Twitter for a while but never watched one of your vlogs. Great stuff! Keep up the awesome work. You all have been and continue to be such an inspiration to me. Thanks!
Mega-Undergrounds are the most inspiring thing in the world today for me. I think that once dictators and corrupt governments are removed with the help of on-line unification, then the model that Mega-Undergrounds display, with their togetherness, their inspiration, should be the new model to aspire to on a global scale. Their is no other example I can think of that works so well with so little barriers between people. People aren't excluded for their color or creed, but embraced and welcomed.
Absolutely loved this vid, especially the, “But you pull out your smart phone...” line. It’s actually inspired me to go out and buy a copy of "Wired” myself (I tend to prefer physical copies over online articles)! I think in some ways, our mega-undergrounds have started revolutions. At the very least, they’ve definitely raised awareness to a whole range of issues usually unheard of in the day-to-day norm. I too have just started reading “The Hunger Games,” and am really enjoying it so far!
