I'm only 8 minutes in but the development of the North, Wales and Scotland shouldn't be that surprising given the agricultural value of the land in the South. Put simply the higher land prices in the South would inhibit industrialisation in those areas. In addition, the advances in transport naval, canal and later train allows the economically viable movement of goods away from those ports near continental Europe where the historic market would probably have been.
