As a member of the US armed forces I do not agree with the actions of these four men. What is not said is how the SEALS broke SOP and regulation that day in accordance to their mission. Had LT Murphy followed SOP in his encounter with the goat herder, all the men may have lived to see another day. This operation is actually used to teach leadership in various courses throughout the military, specifically how not to do things. Army OCS included.

Imagine the fight those 200 some taliban would have had on there hands if those 8 160th and 8 SEALS made it to the fight. From the book Lone Survivor I got the impression that the RPGs were the only thing that made the numbers matter otherwise the 4 men were holding their own incredibly well like true warriors.

These men are an epic great bunch, however I think calling them the "Greatest Men That Ever Lived" is a pretty big stretch. Damn, I remember when this happened and when we got the word. We had redeployed home 2 months prior. I can't say for sure whether I had met any of these men or not while moving around in country, but still all the same it was a kick to the chest when the brief came out. Rest In Peace brothers, we'll fight on for you.
Thank you to these men for their service and for making the ultimate sacrifice. We all owe you a debt of gratitude serving and fighting for god and country and for the ideals and freedom that us as americans take for granted everyday here. WARNING: you will see three SEALs in this video as well as the Taliban fighters exploiting the captured equipment and laptop.
1) They were not there to take prisoners or hostages. They had a specific mission and to the 1-2 people here who are busy harping on war crimes and whatever, please, get real.
They did the humane thing they could which was to let the goat herders go and it cost them...what they probably should have done was called for an extract and made sure they were minutes from getting picked up from the area rather than letting the herders go and then trying to escape...
War crimes are a serious deal and have nothing to do with liberalism or whatever. In SFQC and SERE students are constantly harped on about Laws of War because the nature of the job presents a high probability of getting into exactly this type of situation. At least you got my point about the extraction helo: they could have detained the herders until the extraction came and maybe even gained some intel from them through tactical questioning.
The part about them voting on whether to kill the herders is total bullshit that Luttrell made up to sell his book. Only an officer of low standards would put anything up for a vote, especially something as serious as this. He's basically slandering and insulting Axelson and Murphy.
I'd like to know the truth of that. If true, LT Murphy almost turned himself and his men into war criminals. If true, perhaps he should never have been even considered for the MOH, since he obviously displayed a significant lack of honor, integrity, and ethics. No officer or NCO should ever allow such a conversation to even take place. As I stated below, the Laws of Armed Conflict/Land Warfare allow for the detention of civilians in a case like this.

Again on RW they couldn't get into contact with their Hq.They did what anyone would do they relocated, an they found a new hide.It's hard to relocate on the side of a Taliban held mountain at 2pm.Cant order an evac if you cant reach hq on the radio
NSW, as skilled as these guys are, unfortunately have a long history of making bad planning mistakes. Grenada (1983): 4 SEALs drowned and lost forever, remaining mission aborted due to boat engine failure. Panama (1989): 4 SEALs KIA, 8 WIA at Patilla airfield due to gross lack of planning and mis-utilization of the SEALs. Of course, the other guys can be slammed for failed missions such as Desert One, Mogadishu, and both Grenada and Panama - but all these incidents were due to helo crashes.

Damn, I remember when this happened and when we got the word. We had redeployed home 2 months prior. I can't say for sure whether I had met any of these men or not while moving around in country, but still all the same it was a kick to the chest when the brief came out. Rest In Peace brothers, we'll fight on for you.

1) They were not there to take prisoners or hostages. They had a specific mission and to the 1-2 people here who are busy harping on war crimes and whatever, please, get real.
They did the humane thing they could which was to let the goat herders go and it cost them...what they probably should have done was called for an extract and made sure they were minutes from getting picked up from the area rather than letting the herders go and then trying to escape...

In SFQC and SERE students are constantly harped on about Laws of War because the nature of the job presents a high probability of getting into exactly this type of situation. At least you got my point about the extraction helo: they could have detained the herders until the extraction came and maybe even gained some intel from them through tactical questioning.

If true, perhaps he should never have been even considered for the MOH, since he obviously displayed a significant lack of honor, integrity, and ethics. No officer or NCO should ever allow such a conversation to even take place. As I stated below, the Laws of Armed Conflict/Land Warfare allow for the detention of civilians in a case like this.

Again on RW they couldn't get into contact with their Hq.They did what anyone would do they relocated, an they found a new hide.It's hard to relocate on the side of a Taliban held mountain at 2pm.Cant order an evac if you cant reach hq on the radio

NSW, as skilled as these guys are, unfortunately have a long history of making bad planning mistakes. Grenada (1983): 4 SEALs drowned and lost forever, remaining mission aborted due to boat engine failure. Panama (1989): 4 SEALs KIA, 8 WIA at Patilla airfield due to gross lack of planning and mis-utilization of the SEALs. Of course, the other guys can be slammed for failed missions such as Desert One, Mogadishu, and both Grenada and Panama - but all these incidents were due to helo crashes.
