  • That was a great looking car

  • I wonder if it would've been better or worse if he'd tumbled as opposed to landing like he did.

  • rusty leading at talladega? wow

  • Elliott nearly did the same flip that Kenny Schrader did the year before.

  • O.o

  • AWESOME BILL FROM DAWSONVILLE

  • he hurt his leg, seatbelts wouldnt protect from that

  • WTF worse statement ever...

  • After Bill Elliott left Junior Johnson's team at the end of the 1994 season, he began fielding his independent team for 1995 with McDonald's sponsorship. Unfortunately, Elliott suffered a disappointing moment during his time as a independent driver, even though he finished 8th in point standings in 1995 and 1997. He had a very disastrous year in 1996 after he broke his femur in a crash at Talladega in May of that year. He had to miss the All-Star and the next several races.

  • If you think of it though, out of Rudd, and the Bodine Brothers, only Geoff did better, but in the end, at least Elliott wasnt in as dire straits as either Bodine or Rudd was.

With some help, I think Ellott could of done quite well with his own team.

  • Bill Elliott went for a wild ride down a backstretch. He broke his femur (thigh bone) in this wreck. Elliott had to miss the All-Star and the next couple of races. Harry Gant was a substitute driver for Bill Elliott at the All-Star Challange, which was Gant's final Cup race.

  • im just wondering... how did he brake his femur?? it didnt look that serious for a crash

  • he didn break his femur... he dislocated his hip

  • Probably the angle of the landing.

  • ok i posted a video response lol i reenacted this in NR2003! :)

  • i saw it, it was very good!

  • Bill Elliott had a win at 'Dega in '85 and a July race in '87. He recorded the fastest qualifying speed at this track in May of 1987 prior to Bobby Allison's terrible crash and the implementation of restrictor plates the following year. But in 1996, Elliott broke his femur (or thigh bone) in his wild ride and he had to miss the All-Star race and the next couple of races. The 96 season was Awesome Bill's disappointing season.

  • actually bill elliot broke his femur (thigh bone) in this wreck...i read about it.

  • In 1996, Bill Elliott had a worst season in his career because of his crash at Talladega and he had to miss the All-Star and several races in that year. He was fielding his own #94 McDonalds Team with Charles Hardy but they never won the race at the time. He would not win the race until Homestead in 2001 while he was driving the #9 Dodge for Gillett Evernham team.

  • I believe Bill Elliott broke his femur in four places because of this.

  • I live in Dawsonville. So does he. He's my second cousin. His son's name is Chase. He rode me on my first time on a jetski. It was awesome.

  • are those the spotters ther on the backstretch in the infield

  • I believe so. I don't think there was a structure on the tri-oval at the time that was tall enough to allow for just one spotter, I guess.

  • Holy crap!! The most amazing part of this viseo is that Rusty was leading!!! Go Russle!!

  • Awesome Bill from Dawsonville

  • Accidents into the fence happen just as well at 100mph. It was the high speeds that were freaking NASCAR out. From 85'-88' no one was faster than Bill, as his record(s) proved.

  • Million Dollar Bill!! Record setting 11 wins (85')in addition to winning the Winston Million(Daytona,Darlington,Talledega) He's the reason for restrictor plates! A Talledega 202.398mph pole and the 1987 record setting lap of 212.809mph and up during the race. 1988 Champ!! Although he really should have been in 85',87',and 92'.From 84 - 02' voted most popular driver 16 times.ESPN driver of decade (80's). Hall of Fame 2007! One of the BEST! AWESOME BILL from DAWSONVILLE!!!

  • Not quite the complete reason for restrictor plates. Bobby Allison going into the catch fence on the front stretch (the same weekend of the speed record) was the bigger reason for them.

  • @negtype13 No, Bobby Allison's flight through the fencing in 1987 - coming after six years of such near-disasters - was the reason for restrictor plates. I do not understand why people want to perpetuate the myth that Elliott is why NASCAR went to restrictor plates.

  • broke his hip in this accident.

  • besides my homestate person is in that video at the time of the crash.

  • Besides i didnt see anyone clip him.

  • Does anyone know what caused this crash?

  • Dunno.

  • You know it probably would have been better for Bill if the car went into a barrel roll. Yeah he did get pretty banged up in the wreck but that's cuz of the hard contacttttttttttt with the ground. A violent flip would look worse but be better for the driver. Think Stewart and Earnhardt in the 2001 Daytona 500.

  • Not Earnhardt, Earnhardt Died due to his impact,

  • I meant Stewart's flip that looked bad and Earnhardt's impact that didn't look like anything serious. I meant to compare them...my bad.

  • Thanks for posting this steve.

I love it how new nascar fans talk junk on here like they know everything. They look at drivers like petty, schrader and elliott and think they have been 35th place drivers their whole career. they dont realize that there was a time when drivers like them were winning races. Bill Elliott was a top 10 points contender in 1996 before this wreck. I remember watching this

  • The reason he missed the charity race is because the track programmer didnt give Elliot the done deal and Elliot didnt know if he was actually expected to race.

    Read up on shit first.

  • This car is hanging from the sealing of a NASCAR themed McDonald's In the plaza of the Lycoming County Mall in Pennsylvania.

  • yea thats a pretty cool and unique mcdonalds i went there a couple of years ago. i wouldnt really call it a museum like 1 of the billboards say when going down the highway but definitely if your a nascar fan and hungry and around that area its a good place to check out.

  • LOL, I never realized they called it a museum, yeah I think that's a bit of a stretch. I live about an hour and a half from the place so I find myself there from time to time.

  • like you can beat a two time daytona 500 winner

  • there were a lot of nasty wrecks in '96...

  • And most of them happened at Talladega.

  • thank you so much for posting this!

  • Prolly wouldn't of happen if they would of paved that area on the backstrech. I beleive thats the incident that made them pave that area.

  • It might have been, but if it was, I doubt they would have waited 10 years to pave all the grass on the backstretch at Talladega. However, they did pave some of the grass by 1998.

  • In his case, it probably would have been better for the car to go tumbling...since it likely wouldn't have hit at the angle that broke his leg...

  • I read an excerpt from Bill's book where he said the rescue workers pulled him out of the car "like a weed" as opposed to taking care not to injure him further.

Why are a few crewman on the backstretch?

  • spotters

  • Well I thought of that, but then I figured that they should be on the grandstands so that they could see better.

  • they didnt think things through back then lol

  • Isn't this the same race that Craven hit the fence?

  • yea

  • Yes.

  • did they ever find out what happened to his car? was he hit from behind, get loose, or flat tire

  • is this the one where he broke his leg?

  • Leg and pelvis if I remember correctly...

  • Yes, Leg and pelvis is correct. Missed multiple races, and if im correct, had Harry Gant come out of retirement to race the 94 in The Winston that year.
