  • I love her solo performances, BUT - I prefer hearing her play small group stuff. She's amazing.

  • dirty hand chops tho! woo baby

  • so boring. Yep you can play the same thing very fast.

  • @Jay435 hey i mean this respectfully, but i grew into liking these kits and styles, after listening to drumers across the spectrum i admire these solos the most because they can quite frankly play the shit out of a four-peice and blow other drummers out of the water no matter how many drums the other guy has.

  • OMG!!! I used to think I was good...until now!!!!!

  • Cindy is the best female drummer I have ever seen hands down and no dough what so ever. I had the pleasure of attending one of her clinics. She signed my sticks which in an air tight plastic box. She is so technical and precise. She is really amazing!!

  • @TTfool78 Gotta check out Sheila E

  • @TTfool78 or Terry Lynn Carrington

  • may that 'crappy sound' is her sound.... i like her

  • That "girl" could kick your ass at drumming all the way there and back. I know

that without seeing you play. That's how good she is. No groove? "crappy" sounding

drums-you obviously don't know much about drums and jazz drums at that.

  • this girl never has any groove.

  • @DarrenNLZC Except the entire time she played with Lenny Kravitz...

  • dude the drumset is the best instrument invented by mankind. its just too good, i dont think ill ever find something in life i like more than drums (music itself of course, but that includes drums)

  • That's not really a good solo'ing drum set. It's more for cool jazz to some hard bop jazz. It just all sounds like garbage. I know it's not, just maybe next time she should think about being a little more musical on the instrument. She's obviously amazing, it just sucks that it can't be enjoyed at its full potential.

  • @AirmetalDrummer It's that jazz night club sound as opposed to a big high production sounding kit - two different things. One of the greatest drummers that ever lived, Jack DeJohnette, would have 2 bass drums - an 18" and a 20" and he would tune them to ring a little like the toms. A rock or metal drummer, for instance, would hate this sound. It's a back to roots sound and is great on an gig with acoustic piano and bass and a horn or two. Come to think of it,check out Jack when you get a chance

  • @Jay435 We both basically said the same thing. We agree on the setting the drumset should be used for. I'm just saying that when doing even a jazz based solo, it just sounds like garbage. She isn't pulling sounds from the drum, she's showing how fast she can do rudiments.

The solo she does in this video would sound much better on a different drumset.

I've been to jazz night clubs. I'm not getting that warm sound from this performance.

  • I would volunteer to be her throne. A sexy woman that can play...very hot indeed!

  • Respect!!!

  • 0:03 it doesn't look like she ever got her "Real Kit". I love jazz kits but lets be honest... every video that she does, her kit sounds like hot dog crap hitting a frying pan. You think that after playing that long you would at least learn how to tune correctly. As for the content.... it's some of the worst technique and where the hell is the groove!? I've made a little money doing solo's and what not... but i have made hella money playing grooves. c'mon now.. bring it back to basics!!!

  • @2tonerex THANK YOU.

  • Nice.

  • I have to agree with flammaster's comment in that groove is way more important than speed. How many F^^king songs are there that require such fast speeds? The answer is extremely few. You had better have more skills than speed or you are never going to make it as a drummer.

  • @tdkz72 You cannot groove it though without the tech. She can groove no doubt, and I have not seen anything else from her....yet. I know she can, it´s soooooo obvious.

  • i love the hair!!!!!!!

  • Wooooooooooo!!!!!!

  • she's so good..and i love her freaking kit !!! i want it ..NOW !!!!!!!

  • she is such a fantastic drummer, entirely underrated. she should certainly be placed among the best period, not just among the best female drummers, she does get recognition but not the same level as men who are at her level... or even below in some cases. which is a tragedy.

  • @absolutezero6 I think that "tragedy" is slightly OTT!

  • @dagostinoification why make the comment in a dead language?

  • das a bad b!

  • Cindy Blackman is touring with Jack Bruce in a tribute to Tony Williams now (February/March 2011). It is a little hard to imagine that she is 51 years old (she was about 49 when she appeared at the 2008 Chicago Drum Show) and that she recently married Carlos Santana.

  • To je pa zelo dolgo vadila tako kot večina bobnarjev ne glede na talent!Teta je dobro izurjena!

  • Cindy. Awesome.

  • Fastest making sandwich hands i have ever seen..

  • yeah she's okay...for a girl

  • @kimattbort you're a fucker

  • damn thats some dynamics for you

  • Mrs. Santana is cool! .... It's only preference, only a persons opinion but Billy Cobham plays with such soul yet Mr. Gadd just doesn't sound all that good to me .... those Discombobulated Ratamacue's just don't feel Musical ... but like I sad, that's just me.

  • wow, have to say i diddn't expect such good drumming from Cindy blackman i wasn't really a fan, lesson learned love her style.

  • They're almost all talking about the same thing.. but drums are not about rudiments it's about sense, sense of rhythm, sense of what's appropriate, intuition and energy.

You could play technically simple things and that would cool and the same time you could play a ton of inappropriate technical shit.

p.s. Most drummers couldn't play steel gear. 95% it sounds awful. Especially when they're playing solos.

  • peccato si veda male...

  • Isn`t it time for Cindy to play some `Blackman` instead of `Williams`? She`s got all the technique, so....

  • a drum corps master? so that what they called them back then

  • exelente video pero q mala calidad de imagen men!

  • She's good. And cute too.

  • She went to my high school!!! My dad was actually aqquainted with her back then. Said that there was no jazz band at the high school at the time, but kids would see her in concert band and orchestra concerts playing percussion and they'd be like "HOLY SHIT"

  • cindy and santana should make and album

  • u suck

  • she sounds like female Tony Williams!

  • the very first time i saw Ms.Cindy Blackman perform was on the Late Night w/ David Letterman tv show on NBC ch.4 NYC, w/ the Lenny Kravitz band..& she blew my mind w/ joy & happiness!..u go Girl! x0D

  • Shes got a bit of Buddy Rich in her.

  • she's got it...soo much stick control even when she's giving a lot of weight on her stroke.

  • U can play just as loud traditional as u can in German or French. The reason most players don't use traditional is because it's easier to get rimshots and play loud right off the batt And really matched grip is superior to traditional but I prefer traditional.

  • She's a great player!!

  • cool.

  • You really sound like you know what your're doing, I wish I had that skill.

  • Dumbass, it's Cindy Blackwoman

  • @wketchin haha for reals?

  • There are many advantages and disadvantages that come with traditional grip. Some advantages would be how u can play on the tip of the stick in a much different way then match. Also u can get very soft with that grip without trying to be soft and the same with getting loud. It's especially great for jazz. But a personal choice. That's how I play.

  • @ediot6969

true the advantages are there but the most practical way to play is with modern grips, I can understand why jazz players who vary pitch sound and tempo more than rock/metal/r&b would use the trad' grip as it gives much more control over those factors where the modern grip is better for power

  • I have never been able to drum with the stick in my left hand as if I were a japanese tabele tennis player. Why is that done? It is ultra awkward for me. I don't get it, but there must be a reason because so many do it.

  • @trident3b table I meant...

  • @trident3b That's called traditional grip. Almost every professional drummer can play both matched and traditional grip equally well.

  • @treeman151 OK, so why do they do it? What is the advantage? I read somewhere that this came from the days when soldiers carried their drums whilst walking and therfore it was a way of being able to play whilst walking. If true, is this really necessary then when not walking? I can't see the advantage.

  • She's good at doing rolls in different ways, using only 3 drums and bass drum. I am can only be impressed with many drums /cymbals which is supreme versatility. View (The Professor) Neil Peart for examples...

  • @dlyciousmusic Sad you can only be impressed with many drums and cymbals, and that you think that a lot of equipment gives you "supreme versatility". SUPREME? LOL The only versatility you get is different sound sources. (not rhythmic versatility) You have 2 arms and 2 legs. Given a choice, I would take rhythmic versatility (with 4 drums) over a big drum set any day. Neil Peart is a very nice person that plays rock. I can see that you enjoy his drumming very much. I prefer higher level playing.

  • We are only watching this because she is a woman... if this was a man, he would be an average drummer.

  • @Suludom Would you make the same statement about Terry Lynn Carrington, Sheila E, and so many other GREAT female players? For me, the jury is still out on Cindy Blackman as a jazz drummer. She admits that she wants to do what Tony Williams did. I hope that she finds her own voice on the instrument.Tony already did what she is trying to do.

  • great drummer, beautiful person

  • she's ok but I still say - Stanton Moore...

  • she's awesome, and very nice to look at !! she's got great feel and is excellent in rock music with tremendous feel and chops ! love those gretsch drums she's playing too !

  • So her warmup is go berserk on the drumset for two minutes straight..

  • 0:05 ...And Now You're One of the Greatest Drummers in the World.

  • even though i dont like here style(just from this vid anyways) she's still so fuckin good(obviously....not news to anybody). and her hands r like fuckin flawless. like she was just havin some fun witha warm-up with that whole thing. awesome

  • Comment removed

  • she's really great, but you wanna hear a fantastic female drummer? check out Terri Lynne Carrington - Herbie Hancock's drummer

  • She's really good, but you wanna hear a fantastic female drummer?: Check out

Terri Lynne Carrington - Herbie Hancock''s drummer.

  • She has a nice butt.

  • Shes got no soul

  • cool!!

  • What's up with people always comparing genders. It's stupid.

  • Lightning Chops!! Fantastic job Cindy!

  • I once attempted to contact Ms. Blackman for some sessions and she was quite rude and condescending in her response. As it turns out, and after watching this video, she did me a favor.

  • I regret that I haven't paid more attention to this master. She's awesome - thanks for uploading this video.

  • I regret that I haven't paid more attention to this master. She's awesome - thanks for uploading this video.

  • Yes of course!!!

  • umm, because you play better? JA

  • Drum corps has produced a lot of greats. Cobham, Gadd, Blackman, Petrillo, Chorazy, Carson, Johnson etc. Drummers need to learn their snare basics first before moving on to set. Then they will be able to tackle the other stuff.

  • @flammaster i kind of agree but at the same time, many great drummers started out on drumset so when it was time or whenever they did learn rudiments they knew how to apply them around the kit

  • @flammaster I always wonder when I see drummers from, like, The Cavaliers what it would be like to then put them behind a kit. Some of the most refined technique and musicality is found in the corps... But I agree. Musicality is something that cannot be learned like technique, it's experienced learning, not so much physical practice. If that makes any sense, hah,

  • @flammaster Her small drum kit is still like a "Starter Edition" to me.

  • @dlyciousmusic you've got to be kidding? the number of drums doesn't make them a beginner. some can play bigger kits, some music might dictate a bigger kit, some doesn't. Cindy can play just as well as any well respected jazz player, she just needs to get more recordings/live performances playing jazz rather than the pop/rock stuff to pay the bills.

  • @flammaster i agree, however i believe that if you stick only to the technique that is learned in a corps setting you will be limited.

  • @flammaster Danny Carey as well.

  • @flammaster I disagree. I started on kit at age 7 and hated drum corps at 15 because there was no "soul" involved. Sure, you learn a lot of rudiments which transfer to the kit, as well as develop chops and tighter technique but I think if every drummer started in drum corps first we would have a bunch of bland drummers all playing the same thing.

  • @RFRCR A lot of people in drum corps now are great set players too. Most of them have been playing since childhood, mainly cause if you went to drum corps with no prior experiance you would get punted out the door haha. It is true though it does develop technique but after most players seem a little more rigid than they used to be.

  • @flammaster So true. It's often because you get this great foundation at a young age that you can quickly forget about that stuff and just keep up your hands by maintaining them rather than spending hour upon hour on technique stuff. This way you can spend much more time on ideas, improv, grooves etc and most importantly PLAYING!

  • @flammaster Two others to think of are Maurice White and Steve Smith.

  • @flammaster Your comment is very inspiration for a beginer like myself, thanks

  • @flammaster it's a valid point, but i disagree. i think establishing groove is one of the most important things a drummer should learn. when a drummer develops his technique while improving his creativity on a set, they get good twice as fast, even if he or she struggles in the beginning

  • WTF?!wow

  • If you think she's not musical you should think again. I agree this is a demo of technique but she has the goods musically too,to say the least. Not many people can play up to her standard. Tony Williams would have been stoked to see her play.

  • @musicalala yes but surely you agree she is too young to play professionally?

  • @jpnicolacopoulos do you know anything about Cindy Blackman? she is 50 years old. research her work. she's most know for being Lenny Kravitz drummer (for over 10 years...beginning in 1993). she's has released several jazz albums (9+) and has played/worked with many jazz greats.

  • @MonroviaLIB she is 50 years old? no way...i'm black and i dont believe haha!

anyways i love her afro...she is beautiful for her age then! will check out her albums.

  • @AvidTuber87 she was born in 1959, see her wiki (it could be wrong, but I don't think so). ever heard the saying, "black don't crack"? most black people don't look their age (especially if they take care of themselves).

  • @MonroviaLIB i'm still trying to wrap my head around that. haha! she's cool and i love her style.

  • Yes, she is 50

and bad as all get out!

  • @AvidTuber87

I'm not black, but I looked it up and she's fifty. I guess the low resolution and soft focus of the YT vids helps. But I say she has good genes and looks very youthful.

  • @dvision23 must be! she looks about 30 to me.

  • @jpnicolacopoulos

I don't really think age matters other than for those that are too young to perform in establishments serving liquor. We have a lot of jazz musicians locally(vancouver bc canada) that are in their early 20's that have come out of jazz studies programs that are very stage-worthy. I have performed w/a few that play at an unbelievable level. You'd think they had 40 yrs experience. Chk out Bria Skonberg or Amanda Tosoff here on youtube.

  • @musicalala , i very agree with that, she's got Tony, Max, i hear a lot of Jack Dejohnette too in her pocket, beyond that, that sounds definitely Cindy Blackman. Plus she has so much experience as a sidewoman, she's one of the best drummers on the planet.

  • @benjudrums

She is very good. I'm not super-keen on her swing playing but not because she's not good but more bcuz I like a different style. I'm a fan of Jeff Hamilton,Ari Hoenig,Brian Blade and Bill Stewart. Despite my preferences, there's no denying her skill and musicality. I didn't know she's 50. Wow,she looks so young.

  • @musicalala That's funny how different ears hear different things because I like Cindy's jazz playing better than Hamilton or Billy Stewart. They are so polished and perfect, I like the raw open sound that she projects. And yet the technique is there, but more like an athlete who's out there making you FEEL the whole thing so much more. Dig where I'm coming from????????? Check out some of Cindy's jazz licks and tell me what you think!!!!! This aint no fight, I'm just communicating with you bro!

  • @jazdrum68

It's all good. If we all liked the same thing it'd be a boring planet. The drummers I tend to like (Erskine's another on my list of faves) have a blatant lyrical, melodic element to their style. You can almost sing what they play. I've always liked players that stuck close to melodies. One huge exception is Jeff Watts. That dude is from another planet yet I am stoked every time I see/hear him play. I don't think anyone can mimic Watts' style. Dude is totally stream of consciousness

  • @musicalala jeff is the FUCKING MAN.

  • Tony Williams was a stunning player because he matched a sensational musical interpretation with sensational technique. This clip showed Cindy's technical accomplishments far more than her musical ones.

  • The Best Drummer I Have Ever Heard In My Life.

  • She got any good instruction DVD's? Wow!

  • HamburgerTrain why should i hide because if u look at secret footage im shure uve never scene u should hear buddy rich play some Funk Grooves and how he uses his solo jazz techniques into it its uter Genius and btw buddy rich has a lot more order to what he does at surtain times and the dynamics he has at those speeds he reaches is utter Brilliance!!!Ok Cindy has Speed and an amazing sense of awareness of what shes doing but she doesnt have that groove when she plays. it 2 mechanical.

  • Please with all due respect and no malice intended, post your video. If your technique is better than Cindy's I want to add you as a favorite drummer.

    Best Wishes and Thank You

  • @DigDaf92 Funny how you talk about buddy rich and after you say there is no feel. Buddy had no feel. Hide yourself.

  • actually she's a wannabe Tony Williams. who is gail louise?

  • HENEA .

  • Sweetfly haha brother and sister lol wat a ledgend!

  • @niallyeah .... what kind of a stupid fucking redneck are you ... you actually have the balls to use that word ... where in the south are you from .... also , in addition to your obvious mental and intellectual deficiencies , did your parents being brother and sister result in you having any physical deformities

  • i can't remember what i said because my comment has been removed due to a severe case of fascism.

I live in England not the south, and i've got all the fucking scones in the world to munch on.

Also i'm guessing i said something about the fact that this video is only good for about 4 seconds, where she does some blastbeats. The rest is just her having an epileptic fit of some sort.

  • You said ..... " this nigger sucks ass "

  • she gives great headache!

  • I agree on the play and the haircut!

  • This really isn't fair, Cindy good? highly over rated. there are so many better drummers than her why is she so highly touted? yea she is a black female thats the only way i can figure it. other than she stands out for that reason. she is meadiocore at best. and yet gets the money and endorsements. go figure.

  • that's what I mean! well, i mean, better than mediocre, but not outstanding

  • 2anthony38: sour grapes boyfriend. Get a grip. Ummm... lets see... Cindy Blackman, brilliantly talented, smart and very gorgeous. You, small minded, limited IQ, with a racist whiff and a misogynous touch: not nice. Get help now.

  • being a women does help ppl notice you on set but she is really good and has great technique and rudiment foundation....not to mention, cool hair!!

  • no doubt, cindy is a good, and i really don't mean to sound sexist... BUT. i wonder if some of her success is because she is a woman. like, nothing she does in this video makes me say WOW. especially since stanton moore and johnny rabb were at that clinic.

  • lambheartslayer, Cindy is absolutely at the level of Moore and Rabb. They all have very different styles, and if you seriously believe that she isn't as good as them, then you simply don't understand her drumming.

  • no no, I definitely respect her. I guess it's just not my thing.

  • this is ok, but ugghhh i can't stand those high-end tuned bass drums lol.

  • awsome drummer and she on on the best set gretsch

  • 65Ludwig, the car's name was Kitt, you fucktard. If you're gonna bash someone, at least know something about the subject.

Don't be hatin' on Cindy's successful career because she mastered multiple genres with a 4 in the pocket.

  • she could bang on a coffee can with a set of chopsticks and it would still sound good

  • That's some real kick ass drumming right there!

  • She's great!

  • I love that woman!

  • Tony Williams reincarnated!

  • @65ludwig lol. people call it diff things. as long as ya kno what she means its allright.. gosh!

  • cock? you're not a cock, you're a dick... they're called dicks not cocks, and you're a dick...

You can call it whatever you like -_-

  • whats with the dick and cock thing, you like sayin it alot....ahhhh i get it....lol....listen to the lame commenst in here. man little kit she can ply. its tunned higher than my tom...tony williams. if all of you would spend more time practing , instead of jerk each other off on here you might be good some day....except for the coolrastakieron cock thing@

  • Lol

  • Check out her jazz cd Code Red

  • sounds like tony williams was a big influence on her.

  • damn she is so fuckin killin

  • That bass drum is tuned way higher than my 2nd tom lol. Tiny little set but man she plays it well.

  • damn shes pretty sick with it..and she fine as hell

  • thats a toy drum kit right there lmao/

  • jazz kit

  • yeah i know, but it looks like a toy kit.

  • great drumming. by her the other half

cant even stand up to the plate

  • she gorgueos when she plays, got a roll like an ouzie

  • cindy , a,great drummer,with heart and soul!.........jb

  • like a female buddy rich

  • WHAT!!>!>!!?!?!?!?!

  • I would give her a paradiddle.

  • wow she's much better than I imagined. Only saw her playing with lenny kravitz before and she kept pretty much in the pocket--never saw much in the way of rolls etc. She has good chops and stick control. It pays to start playing at a young age.

  • shes cindy blackman, she played with lenny kravitz for a few tours, shes a pro yo, have some respect guys.

  • She's good but not one of the greats - looks awkward and messy

  • Nice Body.

  • She's an incredible swing drummer!

  • Cindy really has it together man..............
