  • they both think they are the dark prince. ironically, that excludes tony williams

  • McLaughlin always has the best drummers. Williams, Cobham, Chambers, Zakir Hussain, etc.

  • Bad Ass MoFo's right there...without a doubt!!

Wish they were all still alive. Tony and Jaco RIP!

  • It's normal...only the best drummer and electric bass players lived on this planet (+a great guitar player)

  • @rikibitta at one point like 1971-1975 John Mclaughlin was considered the best guitarist on the planet, when he was Mahavishnu

  • @triofdoom ya man I know this story! In my young days -full of Hendrix & Zappa, Davis and Coltrane(...)- we, me and my older musician friends, Talked a lot about difference between musical genius and monstre tecknik...

There are so many great virtuosos that can play Bach music perfectly, but only Segovia for guitar an Gould for piano are in the same league with Johann Sebastian(!) - the same of Jaco and Tony, Hendrix & Zappa or Davis & Coltrane, Mozart & Beethoven,Chopin & ...Bill Evans

  • @rikibitta ...for me Mclaughlin plays in Second League - but sure a beatiful player.

ps: my favourite John's trio is with Trilok Gurtu & Dominique DiPiazza '89/93 years(Que Alegria LP) - after Trio of Doom obviously!!!

And sry my idiot engl. - Italy Medioevo here .))

  • @rikibitta

I agree, Coltrane and Miles were on that level. But the question is who is out there now?

  • @triofdoom McLaughlin

  • @rikibitta ...a bit too much "white" for my attitude. like a Duo+1of Doom .))

    ps:see now,wow you have a superb channel - congrats!

  • probably the best improv gig ever!

  • Lovely playing by all three, chasing each other.

  • I agree and it's unfortunate that many of the great musicians out there aren't doing this kind of stuff anymore! Not many radio stations would be playing this so people shy away from it! This is really an incredible display of musicianship! The best I've ever heard Tony Williams play!

  • when some people play pissed off they play well, the energy is totally happening here, JM does things here that he is usually too reserved to do, should do this much more often.

  • 3 geniuses, but I can see why Tony & especially John were annoyed at Jaco who had a hard job to hold the chords together with no keys or other instrument. Instead of holding the fort Jaco kinda soloed on top with them, making it hard work for John who needed someone laying down a foundation. They still did a fantastic job making it sound good, but I'm thinking that a rhythm gtr or keys quietly grooving on the most essential basics might have helped that thing go through the roof for more people.

  • Actually, I think this works. And you know, they didn't clam the ending so it couldn't have been total chaos :)

  • JACO PLAYs TO FAR OF THE ORIGINAL TUNE AFTER A WHILE , JOHN MCL THOUGHT THIS WAS A DISASTER CAUS HE COULD PLAY ALONG THE CHORDS OF THE ORIGINAL TUNE . JACO WAS ALL OVER THE PLACE . I EVEN READ THAT THIS WAS THEIR LAST CONCERT CAUSE JOHN MC NEVER WANTED TO PLAY WITH JACO AGAIN CAUS OF HIS CHAOTIC PLAYING . JACO PROBABLY PLAYED WHATEVER HE HEARED IN HIS HEAD , STILL THIS WAS TOO MUCH FOR JOHN MC TO BE A PROPER BASSLINE ..... BIG FUN !

  • These people were the baddest motherfuckers on this planet when playing this tune.

  • I'd like to see the sheet music for that!

  • mmh, it seems like they're going in 3 different ways during solos, or it's only my impression?

  • the best power trio ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @funkeemon

Are you aware of a live video of the Havana Jam?

    Sarkis

  • Such a shame they didn't get along, but at the same time I'm gratefull it was recorded. After hearing how they sounded after only a few weeks, I can only dream of how they would sound after a few years.

  • In Jaco biography, McLaughlin talked about this gig as a disaster. Um... it sounds like genius to me.

  • It drives me crazy that people seem to think Jaco was just muckin around on this. I don't know if anyone here has bothered to listen to the original version, but his bass is pretty much true (and the tempo is even FASTER) so as far as i'm concerned Jaco does a fine and innimitable Job keeping a crazy chord sequence together. :D Especially the little section at about 3:15 where Jaco is bustin out speedy as shit lines, "Look here, I can play that fast too!" he's saying. And that drumming?!!Fuck me

  • PURE "ASS KICKIN' MOTHER FUCKER"!

  • Super Class Musician !...

  • people don't play like this anymore?!?!?!? what!>!>!~?~?~ go out and listen to music around the world NYC europe it is EVERYWHERE

THANK YOU TONY JACO AND JOHN for inspiring our time, but honestly this music is still GOING GOIN GOING being played,,,,, maybe better

"it" still exists that is a fact

  • "Bay Of Gigs"? A "total disaster"? This sounds like some burning avant-garde fusion to me. Nothing inappropriate about what Jaco plays--especially considering this is a trio. Since he's the sole harmonic support, he has the freedom to take it out if he hears that way. Adventurous, yes. Disaster? No way.

  • if this is them pissed, gimme more, happy or mad!

  • This is intense! Lord, satan, whatever have mercy

  • Somebody wanna explained what just happened? I've been bowled over by Sonic Chaos,,,but I LOVED every second of it!

  • anybody got any live videos of these crazy motherfuckers?

i think capturing these guys on video might be beyond the laws of physics

  • Three inimitable talents pushing boundaries mortals could never dare. This is a testament to genius rarely seen. An audio glimpse of mastery realized.

  • Ok. I'm recently reading a book on Jaco and i believe this is a recording of a concert in Havana which was a total disaster. Jaco ruined this on purpose but no one knows why he did this. According to Tony Williams this trio was awesome and McLaughlin and Tony were really pissed on Jaco after he done this. They tried recording this material in studio but Tony snapped after first take, destroyed his kit and left ( pissed on Jaco for this concert )

  • @fusion4bass Know one knows WHY? WTF? The guy had severe mental problems... you dont search for actual REASONS why insane people to insane things.. you already know they are insane. Jaco was severely mentally ill, living on the streets when he could have been relatively wealthy and comfortable.. and you ask WHY he messed up the concert in Havana? Well.. why did he live in the streets and shit his pants, destroy himself and get himself killed?

  • Bonkers... I believe it is what it is...Great although I don't know how much of this i could listen too in a row.

If you play out stuff long enough it tends to sound right. Such is the case here no?

  • @redbird5a Amen brother! I have this cd and I listened carefully for the f - ups that I always read Jaco supposedly did but to me, this s h i t is just so outside and incredibly outside that I feel it was amazing playing by all three. It doesn't sound wrong to me at all!

  • this shit is so complicated that i cant even say if its good, if its in tune or whatever

  • @chillraph LOL - I know what you mean brother. It is terribly exciting and from where I sit, it just sounds like Jaco was getting OFF man! Improvisation at its' most complex and highest level. Maybe John and Tony were expecting to play the song note for note like they had rehearsed it. How can anyone complain about Jaco's playing here. My God................all three are just killin'!

  • I don't understand how I never heard of this Trio.

  • Well, without passing, I'm guessing that playing topless has become a thing of the past. Just guessing.

Still to this day: Rip Snorting Playing!!!!!!!!

  • What a SMOKIN JAM..!

RIP Tony..! The SF Bay Area will never be the same without you...

  • you lot must be listening to something else...sounds great to me. i dont hear jaco and the deep end at all, and jm does his usual (for that era) williams holds it all together nicely and there's a fair amount of interplay (more so as you listen into it) in fact i'd say it does in fact 'blend' ok. bearing in mind that in those days and hopefully coming back, people did go completely bonkers and produce interesting stuff. back off boys and have a tad suspension of disbelief eh...

  • Who knows what arrangement they rehearsed. They well may have planned some soloing here, but it sounds to me as if Mr. P has gone off the deep end & abandoned the chart completely. You can here the song come to a complete halt. John M has voiced his profound dissatisfaction over the debacle. Even though in strictly musical terms it's sopmething of a disaster, for me the listener there are moments of fury, brilliance & ebullience that make me glad I have a copy.

  • Man, everything is so hectic and all over the place. But as unorthodox as it is...I like it.

  • bay of gigs

  • Whoa, this is shit. Not that the playing isn't bad, but where does it blend? This was supposed to be the tune were John got to spread and sore. But Jaco killed it. I love Jaco, he's one of my biggest inspirations, but there's no way I'd ever do a gig with him after this stunt.

  • @thrashingchicken10 You never did a gig with him in the first place. Quit playing make believe.

  • @jlew180l Never said i did. My comment was more about how Jaco was breaking up the music instead of uniting it, as was his style. I will admit, though, it was a bit pompous.

  • @thrashingchicken10 DUH Jaco's dead. So it's doubtful you'd get to do a gig with him anyway. Tony Williams is dead too. And judging from your comment, it's time to bury your brain at sea or somewhere. It's obviously dead also.

  • I thought Jaco and Billy didn't like eachother? In fact I head a recording with Jaco saying something about Billy's inabillity to "swing."

  • Hahaha I mean to say John not Billy(I just watched a Billy Mgloughlin video)

  • Isn't this the famous tune where Jaco was deliberately walking his bass way out? And John McLaughlin blew a fuse at him after the gig?

Oh well, it makes McLaughlins line sound damn hip!

  • @CliftonSantiago7 walking his bass way out.. meaning playing something a hell of a lot more complex than 'just walking'?

  • @RottenHamburger | McLaughlin was already playing out, which means Jaco, without any other comping going on, would have to keep his bassline relatively 'in' to hold it together and make the dissonances work. Instead he was playing in a different bloody key.

And not surprisingly, McLaughlin was none too pleased about this, even though as I said, it did produce some pretty hip moments.

Jaco was a great but that doesn't mean he didn't do some very questionable things too. Just sayin'.

  • @CliftonSantiago7 Damn! A whole other key? How the hell did it sound so good!?

And I'm guessing he did this becuase he hated McLaughlin right? I hear they weren't exactly the best of buds who like to go golfing together every sunday afternoon...

    Thanks for tellin me btw.

  • Tony was a force of nature!

  • tony williams makes his kit sound like tsunami wave crashin into a fucking city

  • @trabo71 LOL

  • @trabo71 beatiful. bravo!

  • @trabo71 If I were a drum, I would run away from Tony Williams.

  • ...and the are no throwing of atombombs these days either, thank god.

    And God bless!

  • A classic, yes motherfucker!!

  • Yeah....if I saw this live I would be so over the top exhilarated by the sheer musicianship. The energy is felt even through the computer this many years hence.

  • SO outside......this type of playing just doesn't happen anymore. I don't think people have the balls to play like this now.

  • @eskimoposh Fusion at it's best! I'm learning how to play like that now :D
