You need to read the book My Land and My People, written in 1962, the Dalai Lama in which he explains clearly how things were in Tibet before and after China. Hunger and poverty did not exist in Tibet, but soon after the Chinese invasion, Tibetans were marginalized (and still are), they starved and died in abject poverty, rapidly, more than 100,000 Tibetans were also into exile.
