  • I really enjoy watching Bob Ross , may he rest in peace

  • @thecolaratlady and god bless

  • Thank you so much, I used to think GIMP was shit, you proved me wrong. I cant get my hands on photoshop so ill have to try out some more landscapes on gimp

  • I tried this and mine came out looking... mediocre...

  • Thanks for sharing! I learned a lot!

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • Bob ross episodes on my channel people!!!

  • that's amazing

  • Disable your ctrl-z; there are no mistakes, just happy accidents :P

  • That was incredible!

  • you should have thrown some yellow oker in there

  • 17 people can't du this :-), Nice Video.

  • I have a question... do u use a graphics pen for it and if you do what program did u install to use it with GIMP? my GIMP says i need to install a program to use my pen :(

If you used a mouse then there aint nothin u cant do!! I think your absolutely brilliant i really do i watched this with mouth wide open. Just seeing the clouds develop i was like WO-HO-HOOOAH hahaaha

  • @mysticalwish I use a tablet PC which is like a laptop but I draw directly to the screen. You can use pretty much any tablet with GIMP. There's a section in the BRUSH SETTINGS that lets you turn on/set the pressure sensitivity of things.

    Good luck!

  • @ronnietucker :'( the mountains arnt working they dont look anythink like yours I cant find the right brush

  • @Chey4551 for mountains it's best to use a thin but wide brush. That way you can imitate the palette knife that's used by Bob (and others). Remember to vary the size of your white and blue marks for the snow :)

  • @mysticalwish Program? There's no program you have to use to install it. You just... Install it. Or, from my experience, at least.

  • Very talented even more using Gimp (crap software). Congrats.

  • @ronnietucker Hey I just wanted to tell you this is really neat and awesome looking. Great job. I subscribed so I dont miss anymore videos like this. I love Bob Ross type art.

  • I'm inspired. Nice job.

  • Don't be afraid of the 300 pixel brush.

He will do great things for you.

  • All this on one layer?

  • This is really good...it makes me wanna try and do it right now. Thanks for the vid!

  • You could totally be a digital Bob Ross. Do some soft spoken commentary while you paint about the happy little layers and whatnot

  • Haha nice I love gimp is pretty great program considering is free

  • it looks like you used pure white for those mountains there... bob would call that "disturbing"

  • Not bad but you forgot the happy little tree! haha.

  • Bob Ross happily died on July 4 1995... Now he is painting happy pictures for god and Jesus.

  • this.

    is.

    awesome.

  • @SirReallyNoOne Thanks! I have two new videos showing how it's done, in real time. Check my channel for them.

  • Absolutely amazing. You did all of that in under 10 minutes? That is great. Thanks for sharing your talent. God bless

  • This is absolutely astounding. For all this time, I never realized that GIMP was so capable of creating such awesome art. I'm definitely going to give this a try sometime.

One question; did you do all of this in one layer or did you color different parts in separate layers?

  • @StoopidMuffinMan I did it all on one layer (as far as I remember) as I wanted to be more 'traditional' with digital, rather than use all the modern digital features.

  • FANTASTIC

  • Bob ross certainly used a bigger brush to blend in the clouds...

  • ...now show us how to paint a bob ross style goatse!!!

p.s. justin bieber is a stud muffin!!!

  • did you do all of this on one layer?

  • There's no UNDO in bob ross style...!!

    very impressive mouse work though.

  • @stills4589 there is indeed an UNDO in real painting. Many times Bob would change things like when he did his 'cabin-ectomy' :)

  • @ronnietucker Yeah but it's not quite the same thing. Maybe, especially with him, there was a DO UNTO ;). Or OVERDO. And yes he was indeed a 'canvas-surgeon' :p

  • great attempt

    keep it up

  • is this the mac or pc version? or linux

  • @PatelPwned I believe that was the Windows version I used back then, I use the Linux version now, but either way, they all look and do the same. :)

  • I guess all that smearing doesn't really work so well with digital art. D: did you try out something else afterwards?

  • @Raegh nope, all I ever used in my Bob Ross style videos was the paint and smear tools

  • what is the color that you paint on the Mountain? i cant get the right color like yours.

  • @ts23944 I used (like in real life painting) a dark dark brown for the initial shape of the mountain then for the highlights (ie: snow) white, for the shadows (ie: snow in shadow) I use a medium blue colour.

  • the sky looks REALLY cool, but the rest doesnt really look realistic and 3D.

  • @geronimojippie That's because this is a test of the technique. When I was doing this I had no idea if it'd work at all digitally...

  • Got to love that program. One of the finest pieces of software RMS and his crew created ;)

  • then we add some little happy clouds. any way you like, this is your world.

  • what's GIMP? I think I've heard my computer dork friend talk about that. Does it have to do with linux or something?

  • @freezazoid GIMP is a free app that does the same as Photoshop does. It's available for Windows, Linux and Mac: gimp.org

  • real nice painting but those happy trees arent green in winter but other than that NICE!!!!!

  • @90769az ummm, hate to rain on your parade, but more than half the worlds trees are evergreens that maintain a green foliage year round. Not that reality has anything to do with the landscape of the artist's imagination.

  • really amazing!

  • OMG! It's so amazing! I

  • amazing

  • wow! that's beautiful!

  • I like it. I never thought of trying it on a pc but it works pretty good...Thanks Man

  • Awesome command of and skill with Gimp. One picky point: Water isn't always lighter in the background and darker in the foreground; as with anything, it depends on the light source and the atmosphere surrounding it.

I also think this is a prime example of why Bob Ross's technique is so problematic...there's too much white, it sort of drowns everything else out and the colors jump all over like crazy, they never stay where they're supposed to in space.

  • awesome :D only the mountains could use a bit more detail/work, but that's rly great work :D

  • Brilliant work...loved watching You put this beautiful work together...same thrill as watching Bob create a beautiful work from an empty canvas!!!

  • The outcome looks crap. Putting some huge coloured blobs here and there, use the smear function and that's it? Add details, the rushed mountains look bad even in this blurry Youtube video.

  • o_O wow looks good.But a little bit tooooo spacy.Good and simple^^

  • Very well made!

  • Genius. I loved Gimp before and now even more.

  • Genius. I loved Gimp before and now even more.

  • @any Bamboo tablet users...

Ok so my problem here is, my tablet's pen broke.. and I dunno how that happened, thing is I contacted Bamboo yet they haven't answered for about two weeks now. What I was wondering is, where could I get a cheap replacement?

  • do you save you work or print them out when are done or what =)

  • 2 words - Holy Shittttttt

  • nice job :) looks good

  • yah but..........are these happy little clouds?

  • wow, I'd pa someone to paint like that with a MOUSE!!

  • @GrlwhoKnowSummat well, I'm here. What are you waiting for??? :D

  • @ronnietucker hardy har, I can SORTA do that with a mouse, but I'm terrible at getting colors right. . . . .I'm thinkin of putting my pictures up onto youtube. . . . . gonna write a graphic novel when I grow up.

  • @GrlwhoKnowSummat I suggest you look for "demoscene" images done in the 80s, when graphic tablets weren't common and paint programs only had one layer to work with.

  • damn... very good one...

  • very cool video

  • wo bekomme ich das programm her? einfach geil

  • ggggggggggggreat job

  • wow......you're good. Lots of talent....

  • twisted brush is great for bob ross paintings btw! And there's a free version of it

  • it's amazing what can you do it with gimp ... thanks for the video

  • cool :)

  • Great painting! I am a newbie w/ GIMP. Please tell me how to change airbrush tool color. Thank you for your patience

  • Needs more happy trees.

  • Und wo finde ich das programm???

  • @fredicool303 LoL?! im Netz

  • cvb

  • this is cool

check out my demos on youtube im a yorkshire lad and you wont regret it

  • I just did this very type of thing using Twisted Brush Open Studio, which is more flexible and "real". Still it took 3 hrs for a 1 hr painting to make it precise.

  • dawn your fucking good, but i think (thats my opinion) you only have to draw what you see and thats the difficulty, you dont have to check it =)

  • Great vids, Ronnie. I've tried it and it was instant pleasure, thanks! One question though: Smearing of the clouds doesn't look good when I try it. What kind of setting/brush do you recommend? Also airbrushing the distance glow seems a bit difficult to me. Thank you and please keep on "tubing". :-)

  • smearing can be done with pretty much any brush, but tinker with the smear settings so that you don't smear TOO much. I use lots of 'scribbles' to smear. Think of how you keep a pen on the paper and scribble a wobbly line going up and down, back and forth.

In other videos I did the sky in the proper Bob way, by using little X's, using lighter and lighter colours, used the smear to 'wiggle' the colours into each other, then did final horizontal smears to smooth it further.

    Good luck!

  • Great, the hint of scribbling does it. I lifted the pen for every smear stroke - but keeping it on the tablet leads to much better results. Back to painting... :-)

  • Very nice. :) I think this would work well in MyPaint, too.

  • Great job..

    SUB and 5*

  • lol in gimp i got cloud brushes but the ones u made look so much better

  • Cool stuff man. I have been watching alot of Bob Ross lately and have been wanting to try out some paining, but don't have time nor cash. What is 'GIMP' and how long did it take you to learn how to use it well?

  • GIMP is a free, open source, graphics application - similar to Photoshop. In my GIMP videos I'm using a tabletPC (like a laptop, but I draw on the screen), but you can buy a pressure sensitive tablet (pretty cheap now-a-days) which will let you draw on a pad with the results showing up on-screen. Using my technique you only use two items, paintbrush and smudge, so it's really easy to do.

  • GIMP also usually comes with certain flavours of linux

  • where are the happy trees?

  • sorry, it was their day off when that was done, but check my other paintings... the happy trees are in them... :D

  • Just a few days back I read a forumthread where someone said that the Gimp is an awful program and not useful at all, this shows it depends on how you use it!

Very nice demonstration and a nice take on the clouds!

  • That's the kind of thing you hear fanboys, and mostly should be ignored...

  • tsk tsk... copying, rotating and pasting is cheating in my book :)

I'm trying to do it using the same tools and rules as traditional painting, but each to their own!

  • very good I make clouds useing alot of smearing yours look more real.on the reflections copy and paste the mountains and then rotate it on the water.

  • Wowzer. your awesome

  • Beautiful :)

What type resolution are you using in this video?

  • This video is only about 640x480 since it was a simple test to see if it would actually work. My other digital paintings are up to 800x600, can't really go any higher as the tabletPC I have isn't super-fast :(

  • I really like the style of Bob Ross.

Just with Gimp... Not bad result. Maybe I give it a try too. And now I watch your other videos :)

  • this is amazing! keep up the great work :)

btw, did you use many layers, or just one?

  • It's just one layer. I was trying to make it a true to real painting as possible.

  • ok, thanks :)

  • I made a picture similiar to this, and used the same technique, but when I fifshed you could see the checkerboard background throught the paint through the water. Is that just because I didn't use alot of layers of paint before I smeared or what?

  • It's probably because you weren't leaning heavily enough on the tablet, it's applied the paint very watery looking. Either that or the opacity slider on the layer/paintbrush is down low.

    Good luck!

  • I don't have a tablet, but when I was trying to figure out why, it was like when I used the smudging tool so much it did that.

But Thank you! I'll remember that!

  • Beautiful!! gonna do it someday... hopefully =]

  • the best painter is, who is inspiring others to paint. Since i just downloaded paintbook on my iphone touch, this video gives me nice inspiration. great, thanks.

  • where did you get ur brushes for mountains???thanks

  • For the mountain silhouette, I just used any old vertical (or near vertical) brush. For the snow on the mountains, it's just any small-ish brush to do some dibs and dabs which then get smeared.

  • Great job.

Fast and simple. Great skills on the smear tool.

    5*

    Cheers!

  • you did that with a mouse?

  • no no, used a tablet PC with pressure sensitive screen.

  • Very good! For 8 minutes, extremely good! Please check out my vids, about 3 years ago I started messing around with digital painting, trying to recreate Bob Ross type scenes with my own style, you might find my Landscapes by Twinket II video interesting, I also have a few tutorials @ deviant art, link on my profile. Keep up the good work, and happy painting!

  • I got the brushes thanks for pointing them out

what ones do you like the best?

  • What Kind of Brush did you use for the clouds and the mountains??

  • For the clouds I used a more rounded brush (from the set I use) same for when I'm smearing the clouds. For the mountains I use a more thin and vertical brush, to let me get a nice point to the mountain tops.

  • not many artists, much less people know who bob ross is. so whether you maintain low view counts or ratings, it does not determine the quality of this video. good job sir.

  • I think you'd be surprised how many people know Bob Ross. Any video I put up on YouTube with 'Bob Ross' in the title always gets plenty of views. :)

  • This is unbeliveable :D

  • I like that. Very nice ;)

  • Brilliant! :)
