dam, its sad that the last thing this bird said to its owner was "i luv u" because it was about to have surgery and its owner was leaving the room,so the bird said that line, and then was the FATAl surgery... :(
yeah dumbass but this bird actually learned english. i dont see no dog doing it. Also other parrots that talk are mimicing it they dont know what there saying.
neither are you dumbass. And no they are not learning english. There repeating what they hear. They dont know what it means. Yeah they are learning how to say the words but they dont know what it means. But this bird is different.
gcmsboy is just simply retarded. Pepperberg has already PROVEN that other birds are just as intelligent as Alex. His successor, Griffin, is incredibly intelligent at age 12 and has a pretty extensive vocab. By the way, Pepperberg bough Alex from a regular pet shop before his training began. The only reason he developed so well is because every day people would spend 10-12 hours working with him. It was pretty much like a standard job for Alex.
he probably does all the same tests and learns what to say when he sees each test. thats how parrots learn to talk, by associating a "word" or vocal sound with an object.
Oh, and by the way, kcfoxie, I think almost every one who has responded to this post has, has had, or has experience with parrots, and a lot of us understand the birds, so it's presumptuous of you to assume that you know better than me or anyone else.
he was heathy there but in all of the other videos his feathers are all messed up because they work him to hard. poor thing. all that happened because of all the publicity and all the people making him work to hard just for the money. though he is smart, very smart he still needs to be treated with more love, rather than treated as some sort of material object.
What you consider cruelty is somewhat skewed. Irene got him initially as a companion, and the study developed out of her own curiosity. I cannot believe that you would think she abused such an animal; and as an owner of one I know first hand what a hand-reared born in captivity bird is like. They can be difficult to work with; and the remarks that he asked to go back and was ignored... do you give a 5-year old chocolate every time it asks? Same rules apply in training a bird.
You misunderstood me. When I said I cannot believe that they treated him with cruelty what I was saying was that I DO NOT believe they treated him with cruelty, which was in response to someone who was saying, "The poor parrot" in reference to how hard he was worked.
No, many times, as it is said frequently in interviews, he plucked his feathers when Pepperburg left him, for whatever reason. Birds, whether treated "wrongly" or not, will pluck their feathers when they are missing someone.
And he stopped working when he wanted. Or, are you saying he's not intelligent enough to know when he's reached his limit?
Don't insult Alex after his passing, please. He was not treated wrongly in any way. And it is ignorant for you to say that he was.

I have an African Grey Parrot. And I know others who have the same breed of Parrot as I do. For some reason, the all pluck their feathers at some point. Maybe it's a phase? Apparently for my bird, it was an indication for a need of a mate. I can't explain the plucking phases though.
MuF123, you know nothing at all about parrots. Alex is an extremely well documented and famous research case. He's not a hoax as you claim, and what we see here is a small fraction of what he was capable of. He was able to do these sorts of identification tricks that no other species of animal has been able to. Monkeys, dolphins, you name it. There is a reason that Animal Planet's The Most Extreme named parrots the smartest animal.
Actually, scientists agree that humans and monkeys evolved from a common ancestor. This is based on more than comparative intelligence; apes have similar behaviors and physical appearance. Now we even know that we share most of our DNA with them as well.
Actually, the theory is that we evolved from apes, not monkeys. And that's not why we are assumed to be evolved from them, intelligence has nothing to do with it. It's the fact that our DNA is extremely similar to apes.
You know, in memory of Alex I might get myself an African Grey someday. I've had parakeets and cockatiels, but I've always wanted a bird like Alex. He just seems so lovable, which is a trait usually associated with dogs or other pets.

RIP Alex. He wasn't a little guy... he was older than me. I can't possibly begin to imagine what it is like to lose your beloved pet after THIRTY years of his companionship.
Why is this always said with such surprise? Of course animals think. They're constantly making decisions based on information available to them. What was special about Alex was his ability to communicate his thoughts, giving us insight into how his mind works. Rest in peace, little guy.
Are you retarded? NO he said color moron.. the bird once made up a name one time.. he had only seen green apples and was asked what a red apple was and he said a cherry-apple.. now that is thinking
oops yes she did tell him sorry... I looked again you were correct... but then it's for the camera. I saw a full program on alex and he does think.. I think she could be leading him for the camera. 3 things were different size, color and mater. so what one first? color as she mouthed. Sorry about that comment blue. Wrong. Two different questions, two different answers. Charles Magel is a moron.
To illustrate, you can ask men this question:
Men, why do you fuck women instead of birds, or frogs, or spiders?
The answer is: "Because the animals are like us".
But if you ask:
Men, why do you fuck women instead of men?
The answer will be: "Because women are not like us".
Two different questions, two different answers.

RIP Alex. He wasn't a little guy... he was older than me. I can't possibly begin to imagine what it is like to lose your beloved pet after THIRTY years of his companionship.

"Alex is actually THINKING!"
Why is this always said with such surprise? Of course animals think. They're constantly making decisions based on information available to them. What was special about Alex was his ability to communicate his thoughts, giving us insight into how his mind works. Rest in peace, little guy.

May Alex fly free knowing that he helped the world understand that parrots are thinking, sentient beings deserving of our respect and love.
The world is a sad place today in sharing his loss. But a brighter one for him and Irene doing what they did for the community.
MY thoughts and love are with all who mourn the passing of this incredible grey bird.

Truly amazing bond between Irene and Alex. We should all hope to be as 'in touch' with the animals in our lives.

Did the lady say "color", like a ventriloquist, for him?
ImaginationBlue 4 years ago
Are you retarded? NO he said color moron.. the bird once made up a name one time.. he had only seen green apples and was asked what a red apple was and he said a cherry-apple.. now that is thinking

oops yes she did tell him sorry... I looked again you were correct... but then it's for the camera. I saw a full program on alex and he does think.. I think she could be leading him for the camera. 3 things were different size, color and mater. so what one first? color as she mouthed. Sorry about that comment blue. I guess I'm a bit touchy today :O
