  • ata your in loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • haha the narrator acts like this is the only animal that can think. Surprise, all animals think.

A lot of parrots could be as capable as this one of they were trained.

Animals survive and make their own societies.. they must know something.

  • yeah dumbass but this bird actually learned english. i dont see no dog doing it. Also other parrots that talk are mimicing it they dont know what there saying.

  • gcmsboy1234:

Cats and dogs learn english all the time you mentally challenged sack of donkey shit.

They can understand what you're saying a lot of the time. But they don't have the vocal capacity to repeat your words back to you.

Also you don't know how much a parrot can or can't understand.

You're not a parrot psychic. Bitch.

  • neither are you dumbass. And no they are not learning english. There repeating what they hear. They dont know what it means. Yeah they are learning how to say the words but they dont know what it means. But this bird is different.

  • gcmsboy is just simply retarded. Pepperberg has already PROVEN that other birds are just as intelligent as Alex. His successor, Griffin, is incredibly intelligent at age 12 and has a pretty extensive vocab. By the way, Pepperberg bough Alex from a regular pet shop before his training began. The only reason he developed so well is because every day people would spend 10-12 hours working with him. It was pretty much like a standard job for Alex.

  • he probably does all the same tests and learns what to say when he sees each test. thats how parrots learn to talk, by associating a "word" or vocal sound with an object.

  • That's what people do too. 0_o

  • lol, exactly

  • Oh, and by the way, kcfoxie, I think almost every one who has responded to this post has, has had, or has experience with parrots, and a lot of us understand the birds, so it's presumptuous of you to assume that you know better than me or anyone else.

  • raeviliss

the parrot is smarter than you dammit!!!!

  • That parrot is smarter than you, idiot.

  • im sad he's dead

  • keychain! What I wouldn't give to have an Alex.

  • hehe... :)

  • Showaaaaa : )

  • Showaaaaa : )

  • i have seen this video on tv , many years ago. This is the reason why i got a parrot too.

They are really clever animals..with many emotions..

    Agree with valadus!!

  • he was heathy there but in all of the other videos his feathers are all messed up because they work him to hard. poor thing. all that happened because of all the publicity and all the people making him work to hard just for the money. though he is smart, very smart he still needs to be treated with more love, rather than treated as some sort of material object.

  • I can't believe that they treated him with cruelty.

  • What you consider cruelty is somewhat skewed. Irene got him initially as a companion, and the study developed out of her own curiosity. I cannot believe that you would think she abused such an animal; and as an owner of one I know first hand what a hand-reared born in captivity bird is like. They can be difficult to work with; and the remarks that he asked to go back and was ignored... do you give a 5-year old chocolate every time it asks? Same rules apply in training a bird.

  • You misunderstood me. When I said I cannot believe that they treated him with cruelty what I was saying was that I DO NOT believe they treated him with cruelty, which was in response to someone who was saying, "The poor parrot" in reference to how hard he was worked.

  • I am sorry i did misunderstand. as you can see we think alike regarding the treatment that alex got when he was alive.

  • No, many times, as it is said frequently in interviews, he plucked his feathers when Pepperburg left him, for whatever reason. Birds, whether treated "wrongly" or not, will pluck their feathers when they are missing someone.

And he stopped working when he wanted. Or, are you saying he's not intelligent enough to know when he's reached his limit?

Don't insult Alex after his passing, please. He was not treated wrongly in any way. And it is ignorant for you to say that he was.

  • ::::::::D

  • I have an African Grey Parrot. And I know others who have the same breed of Parrot as I do. For some reason, the all pluck their feathers at some point. Maybe it's a phase? Apparently for my bird, it was an indication for a need of a mate. I can't explain the plucking phases though.

  • how come he has a new york accent

  • Alex you may rest in peace, we'll miss you.

  • amazing... so good ! Alex is so intelligent !

  • it's funny. the evolutionist are sayin we evolved from monkeys cause monkeys are smart. and parrots are just as smart. it's wierd

  • no. only Darwin says we evolved from apes

  • he isnt smart, he just learned when they show him keys he have to say "color" and then "green".

  • Except they show him being asked several different questions about the keys. He could also tell them which was bigger, what they were made of, etc.

  • MuF123, you know nothing at all about parrots. Alex is an extremely well documented and famous research case. He's not a hoax as you claim, and what we see here is a small fraction of what he was capable of. He was able to do these sorts of identification tricks that no other species of animal has been able to. Monkeys, dolphins, you name it. There is a reason that Animal Planet's The Most Extreme named parrots the smartest animal.

  • Actually, scientists agree that humans and monkeys evolved from a common ancestor. This is based on more than comparative intelligence; apes have similar behaviors and physical appearance. Now we even know that we share most of our DNA with them as well.

  • Actually, the theory is that we evolved from apes, not monkeys. And that's not why we are assumed to be evolved from them, intelligence has nothing to do with it. It's the fact that our DNA is extremely similar to apes.

  • You know, in memory of Alex I might get myself an African Grey someday. I've had parakeets and cockatiels, but I've always wanted a bird like Alex. He just seems so lovable, which is a trait usually associated with dogs or other pets.

  • crazy

  • neet

  • awoant to downlod tis video

  • What a cute little baby birdy.

  • i miss that bird..to bad he died

  • My heart is broken after hearing Alex died. I have 2 Congo African Greys, and Alex inspired me to teach them to speak. He will be missed! There certainly must be heaven for God's creatures, and I'm sure Alex is there!

  • aww, i loved him, its so sad that he died.

  • African greys are wonderful birds. I have one and she is a wonderful companion. Alex was an amazing bird. I would have liked to have met him in person.

  • Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: "Because the animals are like us." Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals, and the answer is: "Because the animals are not like us." Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction. ~Charles R. Magel

God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages. ~Jacques Deval, Afin de vivre bel et bien

  • Wrong. Two different questions, two different answers. Charles Magel is a moron.

To illustrate, you can ask men this question:

Men, why do you fuck women instead of birds, or frogs, or spiders?

The answer is: "Because the animals are like us".

    But if you ask:

Men, why do you fuck women instead of men?

The answer will be: "Because women are not like us".

Two different questions, two different answers.

  • frezkita:

The use of "like us" is ambiguous; the term does not refer to the same thing in each case, therefore the whole quote is fallacious. An easy fallacy. Duh.

God invented man who invented cages.

  • aww he died... that's so sad

  • You be good. See you tomorrow. I love you.

  • hes awesome.

  • "All things bright and beautiful,

    All creatures great and small,

    all things wise and wonderful,

the Lord God made them all".

I loved the above hyme that we used to sing in school.

When l heard about Alex, the hyme was repeating in my mind....Alex was a wonderful bird and l loved reseaching on him because he was truely unique and gifted.....Alex will stay special in peoples hearts....

  • Alex was amazing I only wish I had heard about him sooner. Now, I gotta find me an African Parrot!!!!

  • Only get one if you really do your research. Birds are a HUGE commitment. I have a green cheek conure and have previously owned budgies and cockatiels, all are quite a bit of work, time and research in order to be happy and for you to be happy.

Birds are not an acessory or party trick they are independant living flock animals who must have social connection or they can literaly go crazy.

  • Alex died last september 7. Even he said "goodbye". See the news...

  • My bad, Alex was born 1976,I thought they said 1973, and ofcourse on my last text message, I then said I was born 1974, which I was :). Yes this was a gifted bird, will be missed :(.

  • rest in peace Alex

  • It is so sad that such a wonderful animal can leave us

all of a sudden. I am so depressed, he was a true gift to the world. I hope people support his owner's

research with the talented friends of Alex( Arthur

and Griffin).I am sure Alex is in heaven, rest in peace our dear friend.

  • Rest in peace Alex. You´ll always be a wonderful bird.

  • Rest in Peace Alex. Maybe we'll have a conversation someday. :)

  • bye alex T_T

  • good bird good life...hope your sailing the wild blue yonder of the nether-world

  • Sleep well Alex

  • r i p alex..gud nite,b gud.:)

  • Just found out about him completely today. Him being like that changes alot. Peace for Alex.

  • Such a wonderful bird. Rest in peace Alex.

  • Rest in peace Alex... You were one of a kind. We will miss you! :'(

  • sounds like a voice-over lol. is he really talking?

  • yes , hes the real deal. i used to have an african grey myself and he was capable of understanding a lot of things, african greys are well known for understanding and conversating vs other parrots who just learn to mock.

  • I was born may 1974, did'nt realise he was around in 1973, wow. Sad to see he passed away. From us all in South Georgia, will miss you.

  • r.i.p. this bird is smarter than your average American

  • Yes, he is smarter than your average American. For example, he did not vote for Bush.

  • I did'nt either lol :)

  • RIP Alex your God send!

  • So sad... RIP! He was smarter than most humans...

  • Goodbye buddy

  • Rest in Peace Alecks...

    What an ignorant statement!!

  • Thats pretty awesome. Nice video on yahoo. Cute little guy.

  • What a great loss.

  • rip i was touched when i heard about him dieing

  • I will pour a 40 out for this bird. RIP.

  • RIP buddy

  • For a parrot that should have lived 50 years at least they need to find out what happened. RIP little buddy.

  • farewell great bird!

  • We'll miss him. What a brilliant guy. Thanks to him lots of people realized birds aren't stupid.

  • R.I.P. Alex - the Einstein of birds

  • Aww I'm heartbroken. I'll miss Alex!

  • What a sad loss. Alex 1973 - sep6 2007.......R.I.P You beautiful, clever little bird

  • best. bird. ever.

  • Here's an easier way to find the video. Go to PBS dot org and do a search "alex the gray parrot" then look for and click on "PBS-Scientific American Frontiers:Pet Tech:Watch Online". It's the third video down. It starts out with dogs, but Alex shows up halfway through the video.

  • Go to the PBS dot org website and look up Alex on the watchonline section. It's really good! It's the third video down. It starts out talking about dogs, but they talk about Alex halfway through the video. It's really good!

  • R.I.P. sweet bird

  • I'm going to miss Alex.

  • Wow.. Can you imagine? If he was smarter, We could askhim a favor to ask other parrots that We wanna know. Like, Do Parrots have a name?

  • Noooo

  • R.I.P. Alex

  • What a loss. Long may you fly, Alex.

  • r.i.p. alex...

  • "Be good, see you tommorow; I love you." --Alex, the night he died.

    Poor little baby. Goodbye, sweetie.

  • Actually, his owner said that to him. He actual words were "You'll be in tomorrow."

But still. So sad. Bye Alex, we luves you.

  • Sorry for the misquote, devi. And thanks for the correction. What a special little guy he was.

  • This is a quote from wikipedia and CNN, so I think this is actually how the dialogue went:

According to Dr. Pepperberg, the final time she saw Alex on Thursday September 6. They went through their goodnight routine in which she told him it was time to go in the cage. She recalls that Alex said "You be good. I love you." She responded, "I love you, too." He said "You'll be in tomorrow," and she responded, "Yes, I'll be in tomorrow."

  • How sad. He will be greatly missed. He is so sweet. We are all devastated. His loss is met with more grief than the loss of most human celebrities I know, because he is so much more important and intelligent.

  • Very true. I think that quote is right, but I wish I knew for sure. I've seen different versions. He worked hard to say those words. We should quote Alex correctly! :-) I also wish that there were more videos of him on YouTube, but that might be a copywright issue.

  • May there be an endless supply of green grapes where you are now, Alex! My sympathies to those who loved him and cared for him for 31 years!

  • how come there's not more Alex videos online?

  • Bastard.

  • No no, my bastard comment was in reply to the guy mocking Alex's death, sorry for any confusion! I am DEEPLY DEEPLY saddened by this little guy's death, may he rest in peace!

  • R.I.P. Alex...

  • what's different, alex?

    Rarrrrt! I'm dead!

    RIP Alex :(

  • fuck dude.. hes so cute. i recently just got an african grey RIP little boy

  • rip, little baby.

  • RIP Alex. He wasn't a little guy... he was older than me. I can't possibly begin to imagine what it is like to lose your beloved pet after THIRTY years of his companionship.

  • RIP little guy :(

  • Fly free Alex, you taught us a lot about the incredible African Grey. May your legacy continue!

  • "Alex is actually THINKING!"

Why is this always said with such surprise? Of course animals think. They're constantly making decisions based on information available to them. What was special about Alex was his ability to communicate his thoughts, giving us insight into how his mind works. Rest in peace, little guy.

  • Fly free buddy!!! Fly Free!!!! Thank you for all that you've brought to the avian world. We know so much more because of you!!!

  • RIP :(

  • Sorry to have heard about him after he died.

  • He was a special being a true animal ambassador. He will be greatly missed.

  • May Alex fly free knowing that he helped the world understand that parrots are thinking, sentient beings deserving of our respect and love.

The world is a sad place today in sharing his loss. But a brighter one for him and Irene doing what they did for the community.

MY thoughts and love are with all who mourn the passing of this incredible grey bird.

  • Truly amazing bond between Irene and Alex. We should all hope to be as 'in touch' with the animals in our lives.

  • I am sorry Little Guy May your New Life at the Bridge

be Peacefull Forever Please wait For us All

REST IN PEACE LITTLE ONE WE ALL LOVE AND MISS YOU

    Dimitri

  • Did the lady say "color", like a ventriloquist, for him?

  • Are you retarded? NO he said color moron.. the bird once made up a name one time.. he had only seen green apples and was asked what a red apple was and he said a cherry-apple.. now that is thinking

  • oops yes she did tell him sorry... I looked again you were correct... but then it's for the camera. I saw a full program on alex and he does think.. I think she could be leading him for the camera. 3 things were different size, color and mater. so what one first? color as she mouthed. Sorry about that comment blue. I guess I'm a bit touchy today :O

  • I hope for his sake that they wont overhumanize him.He is definitely better off without the complications of the depressive human world.

  • I agree but with an IQ of 77 he could be a better president..JK

  • That bird is amazing!
