  • NEO GEO used a superb Yamaha synthesizer chip with PCM abilities. It got its own dedicated processor. If my memory is correct when I had this system and quite a large library of games; this system had 5 or 6 processors doing various functions. They advertised the Z80 and the Motorola 68000, but other custom devices were in the console. Even the carts themselves had additional processor(s) to manage memory. Music is incredible even all these years later. That's why is was so expensive.

  • great shooter, pretty hardcore! like the atmosphere of this

  • The two greatest games consoles which were so advanced it was incredible. The amazing PCEngine and the incredible Neo Geo. The only downfall of the Neo was the price of the cartridges.

  • @anunnaki2006 Lots of memory in those carts and you would get a bonus processor in some. I regret selling my NEO.

  • Last Resort was the most powerful shoot-em-up of its era with amazing graphics and atmosphere. There was simply nothing to touch it and the only draw back was the slow down now and then that it suffered but there was always a mass going on. The only other shoot-em-ups which came close in fun were on the PCEngine whilst Gradius III on the SNES was a good one.

  • One of my all-time favorites.. Play with the volume at MAX :-)

  • Good news. Apparently this one is coming to Wii Virtual Console soon.

  • The background of the first stage of this game makes me remember of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira.

  • This game has an awesome soundtrack but I hate it! I can't get the tank.

  • lol at that boss that cums on you

  • If Snatcher was a shump this would be the game!

  • @AlthenasGuard ...The backgrounds and colors made me think of Snatcher also, looking at this game an updated version of the classic should have BEEN released on PS and XBox at least a long time ago, good shmup's like this and R-Type are rare and hard to find. Remember Rise Of The Dragon on PC? (later released on the Sega CD) Classic RPG/ Action. Even some of today's "Next Gen" games don't seem to hold my interest like yesteryear's best action titles and RPG's...River City Ransom.

  • the feature that sets last resort apart from other "irem shooters" (for the large part the crews that worked on R-type and Pulstar for example are the same) is the 360 degree rotation of the satellite and the ability to send it flying off in the direction it faces. It takes a lot more skill and less memorization to beat Last resort. I hate to play a shooter over and over again just to remember where to fly, for that reason i consider Last resort to be better than Pulstar, Blazing star and R-type

  • It borrows elements from R-Type and on the surface it appears to be a clone. But the gameplay sure does not feel like it. The soundtrack and gameplay are great. Fun and hard as nails.

  • Hey, novato455, I remember this game! This is from "Nick Arcade," and the expert's challenge was 3,900 points in stage one.

  • this game is really tough

  • i got this on my neo aes, it's still agreat shoot em up. not a patch on r-type though, that is still the best ever.

  • Lots moan about the NEO GEO games being copies of R-type or Street Fighter and try to put it down the reason for the similarities is some guys that worked on R-Type and Street Fighter worked on games for the NEO GEO.

  • Granted there are simularities, Street Fighter and KoF for example. But if there was no KoF, Street FIghter wouldn't have supers, tech recoveries, different jump heights etc that KoF introduced to the genre

  • No...! The first fighter game that came out with supers was Art of Fighting!

  • R type clone

  • it's a damn good one though, if not better

  • this one feels very much like einhander :O amazing!

  • This game has one of my favorite shmup soundtracks.

  • I didn't konw they had ex-irem employees on there team... Know wonder it feels so much like R-Type. Yes the buildings in the background are from Akira and so is that huge crater. The tunnel as well.

I have this for the PS2 But it does not play right. All the frames are not there. I had a Neo Geo in the past but the closes thing to it was mame32 for me.

  • Get a DreamCast and u can play all your original neo cds on it...neogeo r0x!!!

  • hi, what do you need to pay neo cds on a dreamcast?

  • always keep an eye out for this game when I'm on Ebay.

  • it looks amazing for a game of only 45mbit

  • Still a excellent shooter for the neo-geo.Even if it is tough to beat on the second loop to get the ending.Heck, when i switched to mvs a few years back i got it again.

  • The sound and music was only surpassed by Gradius V imho..... Remember this game is like 16 years old!

  • I used to have a NEO GEO console with about 15 games before I sold the system on ebay.. stupid me.

Uses one of the most advanced Yamaha FM/PCM audio synthesizer chips ever made. The exact CPU used in the Sega Genesis (Z80) was used to control NEO's sound chip alone. Separate 68000 CPU for math + 3 video co-processors .

NEO GEO offered this fantastic level of music in the era of empty sound from the Sega Genesis or Nintendo.

This is realtime CPU generated sound, nothing pre-recorded.

  • I remember this game - played it in arcades a few times. Never could finish it fairly ;^_^

  • the golden years of 2D...

The maximum balance between 2D technology and creativity.

  • why squeeze out every last bit of Neo Geo power when making a 45 megabit game ?

  • SoftBank47

    you're not making any sense

Last Resort is a 45 megabit game

other Neo Geo games had more megabits in them

how did SNK squeeze out every last bit of Neo Geo power ?

  • I loved this game's art direction, same with a lot of titles back then. Art direction in gaming these days is downright laughable in comparison. The hell with realism.

  • All good things must come to an end. And the Atomiswave didn't kill the NG as much as the piracy and change in the times did.

  • This looks like a spin-off the R-Type series.

  • old school classic

  • This game was made in 1992, but the folks at SNK squeezed every last bit of power out of the Neo Geo. This is far from the best that the Neo Geo could do. The Neo Geo AES and MVS weren't discontinued until 2004!

  • I hope the developers of this game rot in hell, it is too damn difficult

  • Seriously that was the hardest game I have ever played, and one of the few games I never beat :0|

  • twice as good graphics I ment the power is crazy for that era

  • nice game skill i admire that talent

ever been to a gaming tournament

  • just look at other games

"megadrive" was shit comparedd to this

  • "power" is not the "mhz"

  • The Genesis was made as a watered-down (cheaper) version of Sega's System-16 board, which was already pretty old when the Genesis came out, and shortly started to show it's age and soon became obsolete in the arcades. Whereas the Neo Geo was a very new arcade machine at the time, and was into a (very expensive) home system when the arcade machine was still in it's infancy.

Basically we're comparing a waterdown version of a 1985 arcade board to the real deal version of a 1990 arcade board.

  • $650 aint that bad for twice as much power than the megadrive.

  • twice?! more like 6x

  • mvs superplay of last resort on my channel or here if Toneman accepts my video responses ^^

  • Got you covered

  • thank you ^^

  • neo geo WAS FUCKING $650

  • I was so lucky to get one

  • originally, it was going to be the same price of the PS3 when it first came out (and when you bought the AES console, you could choose between NAM-1975 or Baseball Stars Professional as the game that would come with the AES), but SNK chose to lower the price and it's included title was Magician Lord.

  • I can see why the Neo-Geo lasted so long, after it was surpassed technically by the PS One. The games were so well crafted.

  • man i can't wait intel SNK release this game on the arcade collection thats coming for PS2 and wii

  • It would be nice if SNK included some of their pre-Neo Geo arcade games in that compilation as well like Ikari Warriors, Guerilla War, POW, Psycho Soldier, Street Smart, etc.

  • yeah i agree SNK should release those games on the collection specially lkari warriors that was the first SNK game i play, me and my brother play that game a lot in the arcades back wend we were kids.

  • holy shit this looks amazing.

  • Wasnt the Neo-Geo that system that was way over priced? Like 650 for the system and 200 for the games??!!

  • Yeah it was, but now you can buy the games for 9 dollar on the Wii Virtual Console!

Neo Geo owners must feel raped!

  • Actually there's a big collector's market for working Neo Geo AES & its games. Been hearing that the games can go for thousands of $ on E-Bay.

  • All those buildings in the background look like they're from 'Akira' the anime. Anyone else think so?

  • The biggest tip-off for me that this was made by ex-Irem programmers is the way the boss explodes. Those explosion clusters look like they were ripped right from R-Type II. Anyway, great looking game, can't wait for SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 to be released.

  • Wow! Didn't know about this! When is this coming out and for what systems? What games will it have?

  • SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 is available now for the PS2 and the PSP. and aside from Last Resort, here's what this compilation includes: Art of Fighting 1 Baseball Stars 2 Burning Fight Fatal Fury 1 King of the Monsters King of Fighters '94 Magician Lord Metal Slug 1 Neo Turf Masters Samurai Shodown Sengoku Shock Troopers Super Sidekicks 3 Top Hunter Roddy and Cathy World Heroes (as an unlockable)
  • So how good are the ports? Have any games been improved or optimized? I know Last Resort was plagued by slowdown. I was hoping that would be improved. Are the games emulations?

  • they are perfect, but there are no enhancements. and from what i have heard, they are supposedly emulated by the same people who emulate most of SNK/Playmore's games on Gametap.

  • I have the psp version.

  • when i get my PSP in the near future (if i ever save enough money that is), i'll get the psp version (although i have the PS2 version, there's nothing much better to pass the time waiting in line for The Simpsons Ride @ Universal while playing Sengoku)

  • Yeah I discovered years ago that Last Resort was made by ex-Irem staff. You can clearly see similarities between this game, R-Type II, other Irem arcade games and other NEO-GEO games

    (i.e. Pulstar).

  • no, I heard that most of the people who made this were ex-EEJIN programmers, in either India, or Taiwan.

  • Yeah, it's just a coincidence. After doing more digging, it seems nobody from Irem worked on this game.

  • If I ever have the chance to get a Neo Geo, this is the first game I am buying.

  • Get Samurai Shodown II aswell!

  • probably one of the best shoot them up on the history of video games

    beautiful graphic!

    amazing music!

    neo geo touch!

    good difficulty!

    i love this game!

  • You can definitely tell some of the old Irem (R-Type) programmers made this.

  • Made in 1992 & still looks good. SuperNES & Genesis ain't got nothing on the Neo*Geo when it comes to 2-D fighters or Shoot 'em ups.

PS This game will be in the upcoming SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1 for Ps2 & PSP

  • amen brother.

  • Not many shmups were released on Neo Geo but whatever came out for it are excellent games. Especially Pulstar. Still to this day, Turbo Grafx-16 (aka Turbo Duo and PC Engine) and Sega Saturn are the best systems for shmups.

  • This game looks a lot like R-TYPE.

  • Half the people who made this were ex-IREM programmers.

  • wow.... love the sweet snk grafics

  • I gotten to the second loop on this game with save states This was on gametap

  • 1992...that long ago.

  • Hey, its the crater!

  • Check out the little cars on the highway that you can blow up (accidentally of course). Nice touch.

  • seriously good game, lightyears ahead of its time.

    class.

  • I game made a really big impression on me when I first played the arcade version in '93. When I finally got my hands on the identical Neo Geo CD version 3 years ago I was slightly disappointed. Many shooters of it's age like Axelay, Thunderforce IV and Super R-Typeare actually better gameplay-wise.

  • Speaking of 'neo', the environments in this game remind me quite a bit of Neo-Tokyo from Akira. Cool vid!

  • Yup alot of Akira references are in this game.

  • Interesting, thanks for the info! I happen to be a huge fan of Metal Slug, so I'll definitely give the Gunforce games a look.

  • Happily, those Neo Geo games works so well on Nowadays PC EMULATORS ;)

  • Yessssssssssss ! LAST RESORT is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE Shmups ! :-)

  • Interesting, I didn't know ex-Irem members worked on Last Resort (I'd heard similar things about Pulstar, but I've not played that one). The R-Type similarity itself is all but impossible to miss, of course!

  • I've heard they also worked on the Metal Slug series. If you compare it to Irem's Gunforce (especially Gunforce II) you will see some striking similarities.

  • Please play level 2

  • Didn't know what was more enjoyable, the beautiful soundtracks or the graphics on my NEO GEO games. That console had a magnificent voice thanks to a very powerful Yamaha synthesizer chip. If my memory serves correct, NEO's Z80 processor was used to cruch numbers for the Yamaha sound chip. The 68000 CPU was for the video processors.

  • The NG CD version of this game has the music on it, so you can pop it into a cd and listen to it, or import it to your pc.

  • WOW OMG I WANTED this game so BAD! this was one of these resons I BEGGED my mom to buy me a NEO-Geo! But back then it coast around 600-700 dollars and the games where 250 each!(and everyone is whinning about the NEW PS3 price BAH)But MAN if some one could direct me to where I can find a emulator and some games and I will be happy! If not I guess I will have to search on EBAY....Sadness....But thanks for the Upload brought me back... ^_^

  • love this game..took me 15 years to beat it!!!

  • This is one of the toughest shooters I've ever played, I just give up on it. If this game would've been a little easier I would've enjoyed it more, man after the first level it gets real tough. This is the reason I sold mine.

  • What? There is another ending in this game?

  • ^ Echo.

I only beat this game on a friend's modded AES system with the BIOS Chip for unlimited continues on two player mode so that I wouldn't get booted to checkpoints everytime I died.

  • Yeah, though it's been so long since I've seen it that I couldn't tell you details. It worked kinda like the old Ghouls & Ghosts games... finish it once, then get told "HA! HA! You didn't beat the REAL final boss!!!" then you get sent back to replay the whole thing, only harder. I certainly never got it myself, as I suck horribly at shmups (except for Axelay).

  • I have a playthrough that a friend of mine did through the entire game (both times for the "real" ending) without losing a single life. I need to dig that tape up and see about getting it onto my PC.

  • i also own this game the best shooter on neo geo

  • AES of course. Neo CD has its own BIOS startup.

  • Wow. Must of cost you a fortune.

  • This game is as tight as my roxorz boxers. You have this on AES or CD?
