see that is not even damaging then why do professional wrestlers always keep doing that ultra fake stuff
i would love to see some real techniques in a planed match just to see real move for entertainment..
it really is sucha apitty there is no martial ART ring ENTERTAINMENt.. WITHOUT of course those fake kicks and flips... but just good technique and have that as entainment.. so we can see a demonstration of martial arts.. not just some ultra fake sport for fakes sake
@TheRogueMonk and by the way professional wrestlers "pro" lol manage to injure themselves on those not even close to real matches.. what is that good for?
I have a question based on a concern: How likely or probable is it to brake one's chin in two when performing a kick? I just got done watching a few videos of guys breaking their legs while kicking. One breaks it in spite of wearing chin pads and another actually breaks it on some dudes ass! What the hell? Is this a problem in the world of Kick Boxing and MMA? It's got me thinking twice about kicking below the waist! Please tell me this don't happen often!
i always find it a great sight to see a fighter, in this case khuen khru Popejoy be so careful and respectful. Even if its simply showing some techniques on Brian, he immediately wipes off the dirt :)
@Taronga, I couldn't agree with you more. Khuen Khru Popejoy is such an exceptional embassador of Muay Thai. His skill as a fighter is surpassed only by his expertise as an instructor.
Hey :) Just wondering if there's ever any possibility that the person having their leg held could hop off the other foot, pull themselves forward towards the other person at the same time, and do a sort of side-kick to that person's knee? I was thinking of doing that once when my own leg was caught by a mate, but didn't try it because I could only imagine being able to do it with full force, and so with painful consequences to my partner.
@RacoonBurglar u dont get many ground fighters in MUAY THAI the title of the vid doesnt say mma, muay thai isnt just standup for mma its a whole sport
Hey! I know that guy! Brian Popejoy. Good guy, runs a clean MA school in Hermosa Beach. Great techniques. If you're in the L.A. area... Boxing Works is an excellent school for boxing and muay thai.
Yeah drop that hand so your opponent can bend the leg that got caught and throw a wide hook with the opposite hand and knock you out. Except for that, this is right.
despite the thumbs down someone gave you, I actually agree to an extent.
I prefer to keep my head protected and feeling safe, and recon that if you move your feet right, the hand thing shouldn't make too much difference. If you don't... well, the hand thing wont save you.
Still, personal preference i suppose. Every different way of doing a technique has its advantages and disadvatages, and this obviously works for him, but you won't catch me doing it.
I see your point, and I think there is some give and take... is it better to eat more power from the kick to the ribs to protect an incoming punch, or is it better to soften the blow from the kick and leave yourself exposed to a punch... to each their own. If you have good head movement, then dropping that hand isn't as big of a deal, but you do make a valid point. Though nothing is 100%, 100% of the time!
@zaxonortesus i'd have to go with absorbing the kick, because if you have the opponents leg, then they can't generate as much power in their punches and the distance can also allow you to move your head out off the way as they would find it hard to hop into a decent range.
when they grab your leg either turn it around like turn your whole body and face your back against them... or u could use your leg to pull them into u... very hard to explain... try letting your friend grab your leg and try...
The major move that saves your ribs is to step out if you wanna catch the roundhouse. The opposite if you wanna block it, you lean your body towards it and meet it on the way with your arms. But generally, better avoid them if you can, those kicks are vicious...
I was surprised though to see that some people say you should move TOWARDS the roundhouse during the kicker's hips rotation and allow the shin to CONNECT to your ribs when you catch it!!!!!!!!!!
they must be very normal guys.....both for sure are great teachers....the little one has such a friendly and adorable face:-))))))

Another attack I like to use after catching the kick is a down elbow into the thigh of the leg that is caught.

Cool! Similar concept as the dutch block - using the palm of the rear hand to absorb the kicks power...

this is a muay thai kick catch, not MMA
brucew22 1 year ago
muay thai kicks are used in MMA.
Innercow 1 year ago
no, really? Are they? I am glad you cleared that up for me.
In case you hadn't noticed, the techniques being demonstrated are muay thai, there was no mention of MMA.
brucew22 1 year ago
The technique is a part of MMA.
and if I catch a kick I'm tackling.
What part of that do you not understand?

twisting your upper body also helps with taking the hit, it will land on your back muscles instead of your ribs

My student, Konrad Jones just whipped out the outside ankle Kick Sweep you showed on this video, during his first Muay Thai Fight tonight.
It was a picture perfect sweep and it's all thanks to you Khuen Khru Popejoy! Khorb koon khup Sir!

Great tips. Like how the catch is done with smothering with the rear hand. Like to see more on throws from the catch.
