Awesome long program from him; he so deserved the standing ovation here. I'm hoping he'll perform like this tonight because it's "genius". No offense. I don't care if Plushenko wins the gold; he probably deserves it. To me he decided to retire and his era is done. I think it's time for him to move on and his colossal ego to disappear. I thought Plushenko was the best then but now I just think that he's a douche.
@Porporinablu Actually Chan lands quads now, so tell me something that Plushenko can do that Chan can't. Chan has artistry and his footwork is awesome.
@jbentio Plushenko has won everything, he has a consistency that maybe no other skater has had, and I'm not a fan of him so I talk about him from a free point of view. Chan is just a boy, what has he done yet? Nothing, a WC. A good WC, but let's talk about him in some years and see.
@jbentio Listen, kid. 1) It's you that probably can't comprehemnd my answer, so try again, ask for help and let's see. 2) It's easy to be all aggressive and sarcastic (not very successful, anyway) on youtube even when others are polite to you, but I would like to se where is your bravery going when you have to show up your face... but you're probably just a teenager.
@Porporinablu Continue arguing by yourself since you feel like you are going somewhere with comments. Your presumptions about myself is wrong, I am a working professional, in fact, I am an MD.
was still skating after music had finished, but he was lucky to get an 81 considering that there were some flawless performances that received pretty low scores.
he fell. in the long program that is... to be honest i don't think he did his program well in the olympics. He's perfectly capable of skating it much better, and has skated it better in the past.... pressure's too much I guess.... But yah, he definitely has time to grow and gain experience for the next few olympics
Are you guys watching? :) I guess we will soon find out if all those "transitions" will add up to beat all the quads :) May the best guy win (and my guess is - like China won last night, Russia will probably leave Canada in the dust... )
@2100549 Plushenko's footwork? really? Don't get me wrong, I like him, but he has no footwork at all! Oh, and the joke about switching to ice dance is so boring...
If he had quads, he would probably not do so many transitions. Personally, I can't care less about them. Nice to watch but any good skater can do it, if he train. Some choose to show they can, in a part of the program. At least, if this is still a sport, transitions can't be the metter. Otherwise we should give medals to coreographers not athletes. Finally, there are many ways to be artistic. If something gives emotions, then it's art. If Plushenko's got so many fans, he's artistic in his way
@bravantonella80 Uhm, you don't get a point here. A baseball player can have a lot of fans, a golf player can have a lot of fans, having fans isn't proof of being artistic: just some people like better the technical side of this sport, and some others prefer the artistic side.
OK, this is what I would like to know. In 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships he got a total of 268.02 points. He does not have a quad. At the European championships this week Plushenko got 255.39 points. He has a quad+tripple combo + a bunch more tripples. Who is judging these BMO comps?? I mean - Patrick can dream for the same amount of points at the Olympics, but dude - not going to happen when all the guys who do quad combos show up.
Well, Buttle is a great skater, but I agree he doesn't have the warmth Patrick does. His footwork is also no where near as interesting and complicated as Patrick's. He IS asian, and he IS amazing.
I want to go to that school soooooooooooooo badly but too bad my french stinks LOL. You are so lucky! Is Patrick famous? You get to talk to him?! I've been wanting to speak to him since forever!
Yeah, I saw Patrick today after the '09 World Exhibition. He's so tiny in real life. I mean... well not tiny like a little kid but when I see him on TV or skating on the rink he looks BIGGER to me. But when I saw him up close today, he's sooo thin- I think he weighs less than me. (I'm not super thin but I'm not overweight either... just average.) But I'm surprised that he's so strong considering he's very thin. Wow! Love Patrick and he's really cool in person. Friendly but not overly friendly.
I think we can expect to see some exciting thing from him at Vancouver in 2010. From the time I first saw him skate in 2001 I knew this kiddo was someone to keep an eye on.
What an incredible skate. THe flow and continuity through his skating is unreal, onoy Jeff Buttle even comes close. Pretty amazing the two of them have the best skating between the jumps of anyone in the world today.
I saw Patrick's performance on TV the other day and is very impressed by what he can do. Amazing figure skater! I think Canada might have just found its new budding young superstar joining the likes of Jeffrey Buttle, Emmanuel Sandhu, etc.
If a million Americans showed up in Denmark or Japan what would their people say? They don't accept immigrants anywhere the scale that Canada does. It's not the Canadian people who asked for immigration. They were forced fed it. Nobody wants to move into an all Asian neighborhood. Don't kid yourself the spectators cheer for performance not for citizenship. But they flee to their Canadian neighborhoods afterwards. Funny i haven't seen any Asian soldiers dying for Canada in Afghanistan.
When someone is as talented as Patrick, you are going to deny him of the success and recognition that he deserves in a country where he was born becuz of his skin colour? You're the close-minded, racist, ugly man in this country that no one wants.
You're going to be in a rude awakening when you visit the metropolitan cities in Canada where you will be surrounded by many people who look different and think differently from you. Don't kid yourself when you think that most people feel the same way. When Canada prides itself for being multicultura; the US has their 1st African Am president, and we still have many assholes like you. How sad.
Chill, canadiad coward. Canadians are dying in Afganistan for US, lol, Mongolians troops are fighiting in the front lines in Afganistan, but we don't flee to canada like other ppl do. Take your RACIST comments to somewhere else.
What an embarrassment for Canada those slanty eyed bastards are taking over. You ain't no Canadian pal. Now joanie Rochette, THATS'S A REAL CANADIAN. STUPID IMMIGRATION IS FUCKING UP THIS COUNTRY.
Canada started out with immigrants from Europe (mainly England, France, and Spain). A "real Canadian" would have to be the aboriginal people. Go study your Canadian history before you embarrass yourself by commenting ignorantly.
You immigrants always reply with the same BS. Asians didn't travel 20 000 miles t live among savages. They moved to the country founded by the English and French. Take a history class and stop distorting the facts for your convenience. What would China/Japan say if a million westerners showed up in their country? You guys are ruining the west because you feel inferior you need to control us. But nobody likes you they're just being controlled to be polite. I would prefer a Canadian champion.
You agreed with my definition, which means Joanie Rochette isn't a "real Canadian" either. You're just jealous because you can't be as good as Patrick Chan, but you don't have to generalize to the whole Asian population. Every country (including Canada, China, Japan) has talented people and bums, and everyone in between. You can't judge a whole nation by one person.
Joanie is 100% Canadian of franco-Quebecoise origin. I live in neighborhoods with pure canadians like Joanie and I avoid neighborhoods where people look like Patrick Chan. Canada was founded by the English and French. I am proud of athletes like Joanie and i am incredibly embarrassed when some Asian wins in my country. And trust me most people feel the same way. We want our own to win. I have nothing against Asians but please go succeed in your own country. Look at Brenda Irving acting.
If my Inuit born son becomes a champion of Canada, his HOMELAND, where would you send us, to HELL? You are the one who must go there. Calling us savages? Why did not you stay in your "civilised Europe", which killed in the name of Christ? No one wanted you here. We would have been fine enough with all the mineral resources our land has.
Immigration is instigated by your own government, promoting it through different immigration programs on both federal and provincial levels. Canada needs labourers, admit it. Countries that do not want immigrants establish a system that does not allow them in.
Who're you to say that about this Patrick? He was born in the same place I was, Toronto. He's been working for years to bring gold medals to Canada. I know Patrick, he doesn't even speak with an accent. He's a regular guy. I just had Christmas dinner with him and we played Rock Band afterwards. He's an increadible man. You're the one who's the least Canadian out of the two. Canada is founded on it's acceptance and diversity. If anyone is "Fucking up this country.." It's you and your intolerance.
seriously i heard somebody saying there's something in canada's water that makes canadian skaters have some insane footworks and edges..... i think that person was right. btw, chan is really artistic and great spins, jumps and sweet speed across the ice!
I never heard of Patrick Chan until I saw this performance on TV earlier when I watch the Canadian Nationals, I said who is this guy he is amazing and definitely Jeff Buttle has his work cut out for him to beat this guy. Patrick is definitely the future of Canadian skating and at 17 he can only get better.
His jump positions, spins, speed and MUSICALITY is AMAZING for his age. HE is sure to be a force to be reckoned with on the world stage, and surely in 2010.
One of the strongest Long Programs I have ever seen...and I have been watching skating for 25 years...the flow, the speed, the purity of position and technique on the jumps....it was magnificent..and skated so within the Four Seasons....IMHO, the best LP I have seen this year. Thank You Patrick Chan...can't wait to see next years program...it'll be superb I bet
omg i was at canadians and he was like the only one that had a clean solo and he said that at about the last 30 seconds he couldnt here his music at all!!!!! of coarse he cam 1st!!!!!
AMAZING performance. Of all the skating programs to Vivaldi, I really think his is the best. However, shouldn't he be concerned that some of the top WOMEN have more jump difficulty in their programs? I would hate to see a talented skater finish out of the top five at worlds simply because he doesn't have a second triple axel.
Yeah I know, Mao has one 3A AND two 3-3 combos. LOL But hey, he's only seventeen! Just got out of junior circuit last year! It's not like he's already at his peak. He knows very well that he's got no chance against other top skaters with a second 3A and, hopefully, a quad - I'm sure he's gonna work hard to improve his program. Let's just let him grow and be prepared to be surprised in LA Worlds and Vancouver Olys.
Well, at 16, Plushenko was able to land a triple axel, and even a girl land two triple axels in a program so no excuses! Chan can do it to if they could do it! So a second triple axel and a quadruple jump are exactly what he needs to become a world champion. Nevertherless, his program was flawless!
Technicaly, patrick was also able to land triple axel when he was 16. He just turned 17 on new year's eve and he didn't miss one axel during the grand prix competition from last oct till dec.
I don't think one can compare the age of men and women in figure skating together. Girls mature earlier and peak earlier. Yuna Kim and Caroline Zhang both master all the triples when they were 12 or 13. Most top men can only achieve that at 15 or 16; some men don't even have consistent 3A in their 20s!
Actually, Evgeny Plushenko was doing quads by age 16. He even started doing a 4-3-2 by age 17. Alexei Yagudin was also consistent with quads by 17 and soon after did it in combination. Of course, these two were considered prodigies and learned under a brilliant technical coach. I believe neither of them had any problems with the triple axel after 14 or 15.
Plushenko and Yagudin are considered exceptional and prodigies who learned to jump under Mishin. Not only did they have triple axels by age 15, they were doing them in combination. They had quads by 16. They were jumping machines but neither of them were as naturally artistic as Chan at that age.
I was very impressed as I was watching his performance. Watch for this young man at the upcomimg World Figure Skating Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden, and perhaps the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouever!
That was AWESOME. The choreography was BRILLIANT. I remember seeing this kid at the Juvenile level and it's truly astounding how fast he's risen. Great things in his future. :)
OMG. What a wonderful performance-especially his final step sequences and spins!! Whenever I see him, he becomes better and better!!!! Too bad it was a national game and only Canadians had the oppotunity to watch this on TV. I really want to see this with bigger screen.
The program was absolutely flawless! Im glad theres some new talent because Buttle cant do the quad and theres no way he can compete with Takahashi, Joubert, and Lambiel. At least Patrick will have a chance for a medal at worlds.
I must say, it's quite an honor to work with Patrick and see him daily while he trains at the NSCA. He's a very humble young man and never misses a day. That's how champions are harvested!

How sad.
vickyutingma 3 years ago 7
Chill, canadiad coward. Canadians are dying in Afganistan for US, lol, Mongolians troops are fighiting in the front lines in Afganistan, but we don't flee to canada like other ppl do. Take your RACIST comments to somewhere else.

What an embarrassment for Canada those slanty eyed bastards are taking over. You ain't no Canadian pal. Now joanie Rochette, THATS'S A REAL CANADIAN. STUPID IMMIGRATION IS FUCKING UP THIS COUNTRY.
ycanada 3 years ago

I would prefer a Canadian champion.
ycanada 3 years ago

To a paleface pig "ycanada":
If my Inuit born son becomes a champion of Canada, his HOMELAND, where would you send us, to HELL? You are the one who must go there. Calling us savages? Why did not you stay in your "civilised Europe", which killed in the name of Christ? No one wanted you here. We would have been fine enough with all the mineral resources our land has.
omega778242 3 years ago 10
If most people 'Feel the same way', as you think.. there wouldn't be a standing ovation at the end of his performance.. would it?
It's funny how you say that you have nothing against Asians, but everything you said was derogatory.
It's not because some guy decided to plant a FREAKING flag in the ground that the land belongs to his country.
Anyways. I am not here to convince a racist bastard. Get out of my country. You embarass me.

I never heard of Patrick Chan until I saw this performance on TV earlier when I watch the Canadian Nationals, I said who is this guy he is amazing and definitely Jeff Buttle has his work cut out for him to beat this guy. Patrick is definitely the future of Canadian skating and at 17 he can only get better.
paridy 4 years ago 4
His jump positions, spins, speed and MUSICALITY is AMAZING for his age. HE is sure to be a force to be reckoned with on the world stage, and surely in 2010.

I actually skated ticket ice with him a couple of years ago and from then to now I can see that he has improved significantly!

Patrick Chan's performance rivals Stephan Lambiel's "Vivaldi's Four Seasons" performance. Yeah, I said it. I went there.

AMAZING performance. Of all the skating programs to Vivaldi, I really think his is the best. However, shouldn't he be concerned that some of the top WOMEN have more jump difficulty in their programs? I would hate to see a talented skater finish out of the top five at worlds simply because he doesn't have a second triple axel.
kwadruple 4 years ago
Yeah I know, Mao has one 3A AND two 3-3 combos. LOL But hey, he's only seventeen! Just got out of junior circuit last year! It's not like he's already at his peak. He knows very well that he's got no chance against other top skaters with a second 3A and, hopefully, a quad - I'm sure he's gonna work hard to improve his program. Let's just let him grow and be prepared to be surprised in LA Worlds and Vancouver Olys.
snafkin2008 4 years ago
Hey man. He's only 17. He's a kid!
flyingspiral15 4 years ago
Well, at 16, Plushenko was able to land a triple axel, and even a girl land two triple axels in a program so no excuses! Chan can do it to if they could do it! So a second triple axel and a quadruple jump are exactly what he needs to become a world champion. Nevertherless, his program was flawless!
fanieli 4 years ago
Technicaly, patrick was also able to land triple axel when he was 16. He just turned 17 on new year's eve and he didn't miss one axel during the grand prix competition from last oct till dec.
I don't think one can compare the age of men and women in figure skating together. Girls mature earlier and peak earlier. Yuna Kim and Caroline Zhang both master all the triples when they were 12 or 13. Most top men can only achieve that at 15 or 16; some men don't even have consistent 3A in their 20s!
vickyutingma 4 years ago
Actually, Evgeny Plushenko was doing quads by age 16. He even started doing a 4-3-2 by age 17. Alexei Yagudin was also consistent with quads by 17 and soon after did it in combination. Of course, these two were considered prodigies and learned under a brilliant technical coach. I believe neither of them had any problems with the triple axel after 14 or 15.
kitkat9288 3 years ago
Plushenko and Yagudin are considered exceptional and prodigies who learned to jump under Mishin. Not only did they have triple axels by age 15, they were doing them in combination. They had quads by 16. They were jumping machines but neither of them were as naturally artistic as Chan at that age.
