Thank you, thank you, thank you! This is one of my favorite, favorite rock jams from back in the day. We jammed this hard when I was comin up in North Philly. I don't know why it wasn't more well received or why they don't play it more on the classic rock stations because the musicianship is outstanding. It's rock but it kinda has a jazzy feel to it with the semi walkin' bass line, the killer organ work and the octave guitar work reminiscent of Wes Montgomery. Damn it sounds good!
I was in a band " sound mach" and our organ player, ray rhoades had a B-3, I LOVED it when we played this song, I played lead guitar and thought the BEST part of this song was the organ
If I were to suffer some sort of bizzare concussion that caused this bassline to play constantly in my head, I see no adverse effects aside from my intermittent shouting "TURN IT UP" to no one in particular.
Video is teh sex, wish there was a version in HQ...
@ssur55 I remember back in the day listening to some really long songs. Kashmir was like 8 minutes long and Do You Feel Like We Do was like 7 and a half even after they cut it down for the radio version. Your right in sayin that no radio station would invest the time these days. Quick pop jingles is all they want.
Something about the sound of the B-3 which can't be duplicated. Raw, energy when those cords come together, makes the hair stand up on my arm.....wow !
@inkey2 I lived across the street from this club and, remember the keyboard player cussing up a storm and throwing shit around and knocking things over cause the Leslies had a malfunction 30 min before they were scheduled to perform. Luckily he was a pretty smart dude and was able to get them working in about fifteen minutes. This tune and "Long cool woman in a black dress" were the bands favorites. Bitch-in tunes back then, love the B-3.
The time around 1969-'71 seemed to be laden with hits in A minor. This was one of them("Undone" and "Venus " too off the top of my head). A cool key, especially with a Wes Montgomery influence, do I detect?
@Capcoor I'm thinking of that first Alicia Keys hit, "Fallin'"(?). Sounds like the same key and the album was "Songs in A Minor," which I thought was more than just a pun. Must do research better than that.
I don't mean this in a mocking way 'cos I love this song...but this song always reminded me of Scooby-Doo. I believe that also came out in 1970, as did this song (not sure which came first). It's really easy to imagine the Scooby and the gang getting chased by a big ghost or searching for clues with this as the incidental music...but hey, I love Sugarloaf. It would've been a kick ass show to see them with Argent, another shredder on the organ! Cheers!
Dig this cats, ya know like I had seven albums from these dudes and like I sold them when I needed a bag of weed, but hey dig this their still cool yea man still cool. like right man yea right on!
I really don't know why, but every single time this song plays on a classic rock station, my mind immediately brings up the theme to The Munsters tv show.
There are songs that have the primeval effect when the music begins. You sort of drift to the beach at midnight, the moon is full, and the lady is rare. There is only now. The song ends, the mist lifts but the feeling is rekindled.
this song is actually about the goddess Oshun, but im sure many women were compared to the barefoot goddess of the sea and fertility from the Carribean area.
@starrwoode Please tell us more about Oshun. I rather dig and appreciate your interpretation of the song's meaning. "...Child of Nature, Friend of man...."
I remember this and others around about then, Shocking Blue's "Venus", George Baker Selection's "Little Green Bag"; which was used to such good effect in Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs", that were sooo cool with such "hip" and tight arrangements...
Nobody plays the full version enough on the radio and my sister was the one with the green eyes and female (dad has lighter green eyes) and loved it when the whole version comes on. She originally had blue eyes until she was 4!
I had the 45 of this & played it all the time...I always liked it as a child because my eyes are green ~ Thanks for posting a little slice of life for me.
Here's a place in time that society forgot. When music was cool, groovy & innocent. Lyrics were clean and people were pure and unspoiled. Unlike today how media serves our kids a bunch of FILTH where lyrics of gang-sta rap & hip-hop are full of profanity, recording artists are horny sexual beings portrayed in videos & pop stars are admired for getting in trouble with the law - WHAT kind of CRAP is that ?? Just citing how societal erosion is deteriorating the very fabric that holds us together.
@Korvinski "When music was cool, groovy & innocent. Lyrics were clean and people were pure and unspoiled."
Uhhh...
Well, I dunno if I should burst your bubble and point out there are some (probably even worse) lyrics during this era than there are today.. Or just laugh at you for being so ignorant it's hilarious.
I wonder when you'll realize that, since humans are animals, sex is one of the most natural things we can do, and accepting it just makes us.. y'know. Natural.
@ThazuaBlackarrow There is a whole slew of banned lyrics from back then and long before the 60's or even the 40's that's around, just find a few sites reffering to the subject and there may be a big list with sound samples. Billy holliday and nina simone had been censored for their covers of old blues songs dirty 20's ditties are about too and the forever censored target of the time was Frank Zappa, you still can't hear any Mthers of invention music in the AM on the radio not even by request!
Can you hear the representation time working the speakers from side to side with different musical parts coming out each side. And then they went to quadro speakers and the music was coming in all sides of the room.....moving. Hear it... that was great with the drugs.. Understand why they were an important part of this going on at a party..
Why does this song make me PICTURE some white cougar M.I.L.F in an old station wagon swerving down a residential road, chasing her cheating husband down the street in a rage to kill him!
another classic that I grew up with...man...the music was something
I'm one of those people who when they hear a song from the past can pretty much tell you what they were doing when they first heard a song...I know I'm not the only one who does that...am I?
