Nobody is forcing you to go. However, there are those of us who don't mind supporting the community we helped build and in return, get to meet people we probably would never have the chance to otherwise.

At least it's being streamed live yet again. So while you might not want to pay that much, you can at least watch the happenings live. It's like a free pass but at the cost of seeing human circuitry in action in person.
