@Shyuum That is basically the whole point, they also tend to wear down slightly slower from experience, and they are good training for hard bends. I tend to use 10's for jazz because my hollow bodied guitar provides great tone as it is.
wow, just totally inspiring, i'm a high school guitar student, and still working on making the changes sound good and be able to improvise through them. love seeing amazing players like yourself play so beautifully, hoping that I'll be able to improvise a solo like this someday.
That 'deep tuning' is really something else. the guitars tone is so beautiful and deep. i love it man really unique sounding thing you've got going on there. and of course the playing is top notch
@eclypso You're absolutely right there. But you've played it many times before, right? If our answer is no, i think i'll just jump out the window. And i'm on a 7th floor right now.
@androidguitar, sure I've played the tune Darn That Dream tons of times. But as for the arrangement, especially when I'm playing solo guitar, it will be different every time. If you really know a tune well it's fun and easy to use the tools you have to improvise an arrangement. This particular take was no doubt inspired by the deep tuning of the guitar.
@eclypso You should've had some chord vocabulary and licks, nothing really just comes out of the air from nowhere;-) I'm not a jazz purist but I think that's some great playing.
@androidguitar if you like the style, you can learn things one after the other, understand the key they're played in... once you know how they work, you can forget all you've learnt and it'll come back when you need it, with a few notes added to follow your mood.
So the guitar is tuned (from low to high) "C F Bb Eb G C"? It actually sounds pretty cool! I bet a Joe Pass style bassline and chords would sound great on it!
just a different sound and thus a different vibe. The low tuning and heavier strings give a certain kind of richness that is different from standard tuning. Not better or worse, just different.
What amp are you playing through? I've seen another one of your videos where you played through an Acoustic Image Corus amp. Is this the amp that you used on this particular song? I've been considering this this amp for my Ibanez FA-300NT.
the term "deep tuning" was something used by the brilliant Cincinnati guitarist Kenny Poole. It's a set of heavier strings (Kenny did all the trial and error to get the right gauges) tuned down a Maj 3rd. Although I've tuned mine down another half step.
Because of the heavier string guages the lowered tuning seems to result in normal tension on the neck. I don't remember having to make any adjustments. The auges I used are:
Sounds like the days when I was at Berklee...I'd walk down the 4th floor of the Boylston St building, and that's all you heard...your playing is good, Scott

nope. First, hear what you want to play--accomplished just by singing along, and then there's probably a scale where those notes you've been singing can be found. So check out you major, minor, whatever--looking for the notes you've already found. This is the long way.
Very beautiful voicings and playing Kevin. I've seen so many guitarists that just don't understand the nature of the instrument and you surely know how to make that guitar sing. SamiKun 1 year ago
the late great guitarist Kenny Poole came up with this combination of tuning and string gauges, here's what he used:
6: 068
5: 052
4: 042
3: 030
2: 020
1: 016
My bass strings are just a little heavier than that though.
