  • Complimenti , si vede che ti piace il grande Tal Farlow , Kenny Poole , ect...Bravo !!!!!!!

  • yes...your playing has a nice flow....and tuning is fun and has produced very pleasent sound..

  • Great interpretation and playing. Thanks for the video!

  • Beatiful playing!

  • neato sound timbre, great playing!

  • What's the point of having very thick string gauges? I know you get a nice fatter and rounded sound, but other than that? Thanks

  • @Shyuum That is basically the whole point, they also tend to wear down slightly slower from experience, and they are good training for hard bends. I tend to use 10's for jazz because my hollow bodied guitar provides great tone as it is.

  • Great sound ........

  • charlie sheen is clearly getting better :3 hahahaha

  • You crank out SO hard.

  • nice playin elvis

  • and the deep tuning sounds just amazing, so rich.

  • wow, just totally inspiring, i'm a high school guitar student, and still working on making the changes sound good and be able to improvise through them. love seeing amazing players like yourself play so beautifully, hoping that I'll be able to improvise a solo like this someday.

  • I haven't know a lot about jazz..

    but i know one thing..

    you play great... :)

    cheers.. so beautiful

  • Myself I am not a jazzman but what a wonderful sound you have there!!!

  • Excellent rendition. From Italy.

  • 27 Dislikes=27 people that need to have their ears medically examined!

  • What?!?! How can a human improvise this?

  • That 'deep tuning' is really something else. the guitars tone is so beautiful and deep. i love it man really unique sounding thing you've got going on there. and of course the playing is top notch

  • Simply fantastic - have you studied any George Van Eps studies?

  • Wow, I love your playing. Such an advanced approach. Master of harmony for sure.

  • is this prearranged or all improvised? amazing btw

  • thanks. It's improvised. I find just playing tunes much more fun than learning and playing arrangements.

  • @eclypso You're absolutely right there. But you've played it many times before, right? If our answer is no, i think i'll just jump out the window. And i'm on a 7th floor right now.

  • @androidguitar, sure I've played the tune Darn That Dream tons of times. But as for the arrangement, especially when I'm playing solo guitar, it will be different every time. If you really know a tune well it's fun and easy to use the tools you have to improvise an arrangement. This particular take was no doubt inspired by the deep tuning of the guitar.

  • @eclypso You should've had some chord vocabulary and licks, nothing really just comes out of the air from nowhere;-) I'm not a jazz purist but I think that's some great playing.

  • @androidguitar if you like the style, you can learn things one after the other, understand the key they're played in... once you know how they work, you can forget all you've learnt and it'll come back when you need it, with a few notes added to follow your mood.

  • A MOST PLEASANT SOUND AND SO RELAXING WITH THE LOWER TONE.

i HOPE TO FIND SOME MORE OF THIS ARTIST'S WORK ON YOUTUBE.

  • Very nice indeed. Great tone and you just play awesome

  • Great Kevin! I really liked that--well played. Nice tone you're getting.

  • wow your pro

  • Love your sound

  • love the tone. beautiful playing !

  • So the guitar is tuned (from low to high) "C F Bb Eb G C"? It actually sounds pretty cool! I bet a Joe Pass style bassline and chords would sound great on it!

  • that's right, except for I have since dropped it down to B E A D F# B (but for this video it was still tuned down to C F Bb Eb G C)

And yes, anything in the bass, walking or not, sounds great with the lower register

  • Very nice! what gauge are the strings?

  • the late great guitarist Kenny Poole came up with this combination of tuning and string gauges, here's what he used:

    6: 068

    5: 052

    4: 042

    3: 030

    2: 020

    1: 016

My bass strings are just a little heavier than that though.

  • INCREDIBLE

  • Nice playing.

I have the Ibanez L5 without the cut away.

    Great tone!

  • That was amazing! Wish I could play like that. 5 stars.

  • Very Nice.

  • muito bom !!! Parabens

estou afim de comprar um guita de jazz , pode me dar uma informação , que modelo posso comprar obrigado!

  • wow. bravo!

  • What do you get from tuning the guitar that way?

  • just a different sound and thus a different vibe. The low tuning and heavier strings give a certain kind of richness that is different from standard tuning. Not better or worse, just different.

  • just beautiful!! real craft.

  • excelent song. very very good.

  • beautifully played man! very inspiring

  • Great Tune....Great Job....One of the better solos on you tube....and I listen to them all....Good Luck...

  • Vary articulate, lots of feel. Great technique all around.

  • 55 stars! I subscribed....your stuff is really lovely.......great job.. a joy to listen in......KEEPON STRUMMIN......DALLAS

  • bardzo dobry - i tyle...

  • I like to play like you're really good! thanks for letting us hear greetings from Spain

  • Very nice work. Lovely playing. You have a fine touch. You add lots of interesting harmony without sounding cluttered or rushed. Great job.

  • This is an excellent video. I enjoy your music.

    LB

  • excellent

  • wow, nice tone. I like that sound.

you play very smoothly without sounding like your on the weather channel or soemthing.

    good and clear, very accurate.

  • really nice

  • Wonderful!

  • Hot shit, man. Gave me a boner for sure.

  • Wow nice job,lovely guitar.

  • Great playing, and great tone!!

  • What amp are you playing through? I've seen another one of your videos where you played through an Acoustic Image Corus amp. Is this the amp that you used on this particular song? I've been considering this this amp for my Ibanez FA-300NT.

  • The Corus is a great amp for any hollow body guitar. But I think for this video I was probably running direct into the mixer.

  • question:...what do you mean by "deep tuning"?....tuned down like old-school tenor guitar tuning?

  • the term "deep tuning" was something used by the brilliant Cincinnati guitarist Kenny Poole. It's a set of heavier strings (Kenny did all the trial and error to get the right gauges) tuned down a Maj 3rd. Although I've tuned mine down another half step.

  • Does that have any effect on the neck or whatever? Like strain? If not, I may try it. What gauge strings do you recommend?

  • Because of the heavier string guages the lowered tuning seems to result in normal tension on the neck. I don't remember having to make any adjustments. The auges I used are:

    6: 072

    5: 052

    4: 042

    3: 030

    2: 020

    1: 016

  • much better than all the metalheads on youtube

  • hell yeah!! that's reallly somethin!!!

  • damn thats something!, you play with your heart mate!

  • Lots Of Tal Farlow.

  • I also tune down a third, to C. It helps if you are playing with a Sitar or Sarode, as well as gives some depth to a 6 string. Great playing.

  • Your New Name Is Mr.Clean !!!!

  • chord melody perfect

  • Sounds like the days when I was at Berklee...I'd walk down the 4th floor of the Boylston St building, and that's all you heard...your playing is good, Scott

  • very nice! i'm going to go tune down my guitar a third!

  • Beautiful!

  • His style is full and well-rounded, with no awkwardness. It' wonderful.

  • swweeet as

  • so relaxing makes me want to learn how to play. props.

  • beautiful:)

  • Beautiful

  • lol, 1:46-1:48 enter sandman :D

  • haha.

  • lol

  • Marvy! Quality music on the Tube!

  • it looks like he's playing so effortlessly.

  • that was amazing.. totally inspiring. just beautiful. For a fourteen year old i know music and this is it. I love listening to and playing guitar, voice, and keys. Jazz is my favorite and it is anybody's who knows and can feel music.

  • Hope your attitude is the same now your 15 ;0), Pick up an instrument you will thank yourself in 10 years time.

    Response to TWandDM

  • its like liquid coming out of his guitar. so good

  • Very well done !!! soo good to the ears.

  • great!

  • I really enjoyed this!!!!

  • i likkkee

  • Beautifully done Kevin, I love the chord voicings as well as the lines. Is that low D tuning you are using?

  • Kevin, you sound great man. Players like you let me know just how far I've got to go! Peace bro

  • i love this sound. thank you

  • Just amazing. You're an inspiration. I pray to be as good as you one day.

  • great sound!

  • Hey.. what are some of the chords used in this song? I love the chords in this song. I think your a great jazz guitarist and I look up to you as a musician myself.

  • Hello, i'm 16 years old and i play the guitare. I'm really learning jazz since 1 year, and i'm in the deep theory now, it's hard and i hope succeed quickly. I wanted play jazz when i saw my teacher on concert, it was like a "Booooom" in my head ! Just for say Jazz is international, even in France the jazz scene isn't very big.. Unfortunatly... I love this song, and this harmonisation. I hope to see you soon on a Joe pass or Reinhardt's song? :) Au revoir !

  • Great!

But you change chords a lot,

Maybe you could do more with some chords

than do a this with lots of chord switching

    Just a sugestion

    Anyway great job!

  • it was good but it should of had a more mellow feel what was stopping this was the numerous chord changes like 10 in 2 seconds sounds chunky

  • amazing man. Very mellow.

  • You is great..congretulations

    Marcelo

  • Very nice.......it would be nice to see it transcribed somewhere

  • very nice...very refreshing on the ears!...not many ppl play this way anymore!...i have a vid or 2 for your review,if ya don't mind checking'em out!

  • Wow, that's real music!!!!

  • man, you rock! i hope it's still ok to say that considering you play jazz

  • dude, great stuff! well done! how long do you play?

  • what kind of strings do you use?

  • nice piece - as played by b.evans is may favorite..

    :-)

.....you wonna see/hear something realy innovative - ..how to improvise bach or mozart ..?!

look for video : "bach sarabande jazz guitar"

or go to renatorozic dot com /audio/bach or audio/mozat..

    ..you ll astonish !

    :-)

  • Parabéns ! ! ! ! !

    Muito Bonito mesmo ...

  • Real fine stuff.

  • great!

    Check out my vids pls!

  • beautiful

  • es un gran guitarrista lo admiro

  • does anybody recomend a particuar scale to improvise on for jazz?

  • nope. First, hear what you want to play--accomplished just by singing along, and then there's probably a scale where those notes you've been singing can be found. So check out you major, minor, whatever--looking for the notes you've already found. This is the long way.

  • the scale of studying jazz music =)

  • try the mixolydian mode or the lydian.

  • blues scale. nice and easy.

  • muito jazz !!!! bom de +++++

  • Very beautiful voicings and playing Kevin. I've seen so many guitarists that just don't understand the nature of the instrument and you surely know how to make that guitar sing. Trust me, I can shoot some very sharp comments about solo guitar players when their performance is just about showing how good they are rather than playing great music. I wouldn't be saying that if I didn't really liked your style. Congratulations, buddy!

  • This is beautiful. I know about 3 chords myself so I mostly listen to guitar music. I first started listening to jazz bout 17 yearss ago & NONE of today's guitar rock guitarist can give the same

    feeling as jazz guitar.

  • Very nice!

  • jazz is something that not everyone appreciates. It's a lot better than rap and all that other stuff, this is what real music is about. I'm 13 years old and I listen to just about everything, *cept the new stuff* and I play guitar too! I just started taking guitar lessons, and I am learning jazz instead of rock :D decided this would make me better, and the music is a lot calmer and relaxing than all the other types.

  • i bump jazz outta my car. most cats are like WTF? they don't know what music is. i'm 23 years old and i now realize what the old folks were about when i was a teen. they hated the music of my era and i now know why. things were so much better back then

  • I do that too B-) I wish I could play like this guy, he sounds great.

  • Hi there, i have been watching your videos and i really like your playing..it sounds great! I was wondering if someone could recomend some good jazz standards for an (enthusiastic) intermidiate guitar player who has just recently begun to trying to improvese. Thank you

  • lol

  • mmmmmm

  • i need to buy some jazz cds. im digging this stuff.

  • lol

  • does this dude have eyes?.. i'm a little confused on that.. anyway nice work on the music we all love, jazz. :D

  • it doesn't really matter how old you are. if you hear something you like, you keep listening to it. its not a matter of age or maturity, its simply a matter of taste... i love jazz and im 17. i listen to some of the same artists as my friends mom. i also listen to bands like norma jean and every time i die (you know that screaming devil music [actualy oddly enough norma jeans a christian band]) but anyways... you hear something you like, you listen to it again. simple as that.

  • oh yeah and wonderful playing. i loved it.

  • Wow, I'm another 14 year old in love with jazz, like Scofield, McLaughlin, and Mark Kimbrell for example. But, I also listen to a lot of Frank Zappa, Allman Brothers, and Umphrey's McGee.

  • hell yeah, good tastes man

  • 13ninja1 i agree wit you All the way,i mean,im 14 as well and love jazz as well... =)

  • you all are right

i´m 12 and i love this music so much

  • I´m three and i just learnt to play the song....its not that hard really...

  • How awesome!!! absolutely great!!

  • superb!

  • how can a teenager play this maturely?

  • some teenagers have matured and left there childhood behind. I myself am 14 and I'm very intelligent and well manered. Some people mature faster than others. As I said I'm 14 and I'm into Jazz and all sorts of classical rock along with a healthy mix of todays music.

  • by having a natural ear for music, and a passion for it, enough to work at it every day for hours and hours at a time...

  • I hope you're makin' mad money on the jazz circuit in the Research Triangle!

  • respect ! ! ! ! ! !

  • you're awesome man

i'm 16 and have been playing mostly classic rock for the past 3 years

i really want to learn jazz

  • go to a music store and buy a jazz guiter starters book. where i live we have like 4 or 5 music stores to choose fom 1 is brass instruments though...

  • I've watched several of your videos now and I really enjoy your playing. The video of the bassist and yourself playing "Three Flowers" is very nice. I just started playing jazz about a year ago from a heavy blues background and these videos are deffinatley some of my favorites on YouTube.

  • youve got a bit of an elvis doo going on there. smooth playing.

  • that was heavenly..

  • skills :P

  • Down a major 3rd you say? So like G#-C#-F#-B-D#-g#?

    Holy moley that's fly.

  • G# is *up* a third, down a third puts it in C. But I have since tuned it down another half step to B. You have to use heavier strings to make it work. The gauges I have on are something like .072 to .016

  • Oh so more down a minor 6th?

16s?? didn't even know they made strings of that gauge (i'm a bassist)

  • Wow, awesome work here!

  • that sounds great

  • very god sound like joe pass

  • Puts a Smile on Your face..that words cannot describe, quite lovely!

  • Very nice tone. Thumbs up!

  • nice playing - although a little to long for me. 5 stars

  • I love Jazz guitar

  • Nice man

  • Magnifique à entendre!!

  • wow. perfect music for brightening up one's day. thank you.

  • This kid plays with heart and passion ... kudos to you!

  • dim the lights throw on a black shirt, and it'd be perfect

  • you are one of the most talented guitarists that I have heard in a long time. I wish that I could play as good as you. gerald

  • You really made my day.....very well done!

  • BRAVO?YOU ARE GENIUS ...

  • I hear Mundel Lowe in there too, but you definitely have your own style... Nice treatement.

  • Wow your really a great player. Amazingly smooth. Jazz man...

  • Very colorful chords I appreciate the time dedicated, keep jazzin man.

  • Beautiful rendition on a beautiful classic tune. Keep up the good work!

  • This is one of the top ten guitar videos on the tube. It just doesn't get better than this. Please post some more.

  • thanks, glad you liked it. I do have about 8 or 10 other solo videos here, and more on my main website.

    Thanks for listening!

  • Great! I love that deep sound. Lovely song and excellent playing.

  • Lovely sound, excellent!

  • Nice job!!! I hear some joe in there!

  • jesh, that chord thing round' 1.00 or so is crazy!
