  • PC Engine port is one of the hardest I ever played.

  • 1ºarcade

    2ºpc engine

    3ºgenesis

  • sega version looked a shitload better with the paralax etc.

  • @aryinc Agreed!!! I could rip this version apart with a very long list. I'll only mention a few things. Stage one is lacking the grass and the parallax scrolling. The stages look bland as hell and plays pretty bad compared to the Mega Drive aka Sega Genesis. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge PC Engine aka Turbo Grafx 16 fan but this version is nowhere near as good as the Mega Drive version.

  • @deadlygroove1

i like the pc engine to but consider that sega was a arcade powerhouse back then, and they really relied on their console for doing the same and it did that fairly well.we got some good and better ports on the sega, altred beast hang on outrun final fight strider they serve the genesis right even if the graphics lacked colour they're still the best from that time converted to home. And the lack of colour is just a point they brought up when snes arived.

  • The image at 00:55 looks familiar to the Sega Genesis box of this game.

  • I had this game for Pc-engine but it was a Hu Card and it was terrible and too hard

  • This is how the sprites should have been on pc engine goldenaxe! But no they programmed a tacky version of goldenaxe on pc engine with funky lil sprites that looked worse then sega master system version. Sega master system has large sprites like arcade! Lazy programming!

  • this is the only game i know of in this type where the bosses actually get less and less badass as the game goes on. O_O

  • Um, it'd be nice if someone could volunteer to translate the intro.

  • well kids these days, have this fucking annoying leg humping love for Japanimation, and wanna disrespect the American conversion of the game. like they hate fucking he English langauge or something. funny thing is none of them can fucking speak japanese any better than they can english

  • @LordEli

But when it comes to retro games, a lot of the English versions of Japanese games got either butchered or censored. Best example? Final Fight for SNES and no don't hate the language I speak.

  • WTF?!

The music and animation are kinda inferior to the Arcade version.

Looks like other than Dracula X and Bonk, Sega can do what NECAN'T.

  • @RocMegamanX

So are you saying that Legendary Axe, Neutopia, R-Type, Military Madness, Splatterhouse, Ninja Spirit, Super Star Soldier, Cosmic Fantasy 2, Cadash, Ys I&II, Blazing Lazers, and Devil's Crush aren't good games? Also you got to remember that back in 1989, perfect arcade ports didn't exist. I think this is a better port than the Genesis one.

  • @Soukyugurentai

That's the problem. I never owned a Turbo-Grafx. I'm not saying that they're bad. I wouldn't play Military Madness though, since it's a tactical game, and if it's anything like Advance Wars, then I'd have nightmares trying to beat that game.

I was just comparing the two ports of Altered Beast. I like that they added the voices from the Arcade version, but at the same time, I don't like the Music or the Animation within the game and this is supposed to be on a CD.

  • @RocMegamanX

Yeah they could have used the arcade tracks for the music.

  • @RocMegamanX Dracula X as a SuperCD game. This was a CD 1.0. Figure it out first if you're gonna talk trash.

  • @malducci

Dude, how was I supposed to know there were different types of CDs for this thing?

  • @RocMegamanX I dunno. Live and learn? :D Don't worry about it or take it too seriously. People that do know, often get annoyed when other people make ignorant statements and assumptions. It's human nature to correct or speak out. I'm sure you yourself have done it to someone else on YT or in RL ;)

  • is this for CD, was the intro a part of the game, if not then your a good sinker.

  • “We can be slaves, or we can be Lycans!”

  • why does japan always get the good games

  • Pc engine version has all the animation from the arcade. Not even genesis version had the full animation.

  • @bisexualbuffthug nah, did you see the werewolf? he did not do the hadoken style..but he did the kicks... go figure

  • Ugh, those boss battles go on forever!

  • I envy this version. Exactly why I wanna get a PCE CD soooo baaaaad! Say can someone do the visual scenes translated 'coz I don't know Japanese that well.

  • Thanks for posting! I been waiting to see the long play version!! :)

  • The voices sound great but the sounds effects sound odd and the music seems like it's chip based not redbook audio.

  • @Da1shocker heh thats an understatement. It IS the exact arcade sounds and the arcade is chip set..

  • Pink rhino!!

  • What's this? You say you had to buy a CD just to see the intro?! I mean, the intro is awesome and very well produced, I liked it a lot, but in the actual game the sounds come from the PC Engine's internal sound chip! Why would someone spend an extra buck just to see an intro while expecting new CD quality sounds just to be disappointed by getting the exact same HuCard version instead?

By the way, I've always wondered, how is it that the arcade ending never made it to any of the home ports...

  • I agree with your opinion. I would expect CD quality sounds and music if I got the CD version.

  • Though the arcade ending is not present in the ports, the NES version actually has a great ending, a thousand times better than the Genesis'.

  • Annoying final boss ='D

  • 12:09 - Whenever I see the player turn into the Werebear, three words come to my mind: Smokey the Bear.

  • Exactly what I think!

  • @Lygacy

"Only YOU can prevent Athena from getting raped by a bald demon from the Netherworld!"

  • Nice conversion, but poor game.

  • Man, I grew so fond of the Genesis version I prefer its cranky sounds and worse graphics to these ones.

  • i have to admit i was never a lover of this game and that last leader god dont that drag on

  • Typical that the japanese version has a story and the eur/us versions just throw you into the game straight away.

  • I think this has more to do with the fact that it's the PC Engine CD version than the fact that it's the japanese version

  • "The PC-Engine CD version (released only in Japan) incorporated a story mode, was only a single player game, and also had the arcade version's sound effects and voices."

I guess we're both right in a way....

  • Interesting that it has a fully voiced intro, but darn is it long!

  • Beasts in the basement! Didn't know there's a PC-Engine port with added intro.

  • The Weretiger's long range power looks similar to the Wave Beam from Metroid 1. It's kinda cool, the graphic. I'd like to see it more often. Most likely the only people who would implement that are Flash game designers making an original creation which pays tribute to the 2D era.

Huh, I think I'll mess around with Flash tomorrow...

  • It's weird to not hear

    "Wise fwom your gwave!!"

  • @kico127 ??? the correct is: "Rise from your grave"

  • @GustavoMdeOliveira: It is in this version, but the Genesis version makes it sound like Elmer Fudd was saying it.

  • im mad i bought the xboxlive version and it didnt have none of this:(

  • lol, i played a rip off of this game on the genesis a long time ago

  • ATTACK OF THE KILLER SNOWBALLS <_<

  • 1:20. I'm going to have nightmares for a week now. :-(

  • LOL, his last transformation as a rhino wrestler was the easiest to defeat than all the other forms he took.

  • WEL-Come to yah DOOM!

  • Holy shit, the guy transforms into a fucking dragon that shoots lightning. Awesome.

  • I didn't even know there was a Pc Engine version. That story intro is pretty cool.

  • i did not know that either im surprised. First golden axe now this
