yeah right about that my friend.surely correct. but i never really knew about them looking like the ones on the U-boats,i am gonna check that out i forgot them U-boats.
@jiggy588 Actually, I was referring to ALP44s when I said that. Sorry I didn't specify that in my comment. I can't believe NJT no longer uses ALP44s or the E60s for that matter. Personally, I've never seen E60s live, but I do remember ALP44s. Now, they're all ALP46s and a brand new dual mode locomotive called an ALP45, I think, is coming out. I hate progress and wish things were back to the good old days.
@Dac719 LOL ha ha ha oh okay its okay i should of thought of about that also.but for some reason i forgot about the ALP44s yeah okay.its okay.yeah yeah you about that.the good old days hey man i thinking about it also.
@soundseeker63 no those were ordered brand new for the electrified line there.. those units are called E60c's..they have upgraded electronic's and smaller front windows then the amtrak NJT E60's..they now run on the Black Bessama an Lake Powell Railroad..they replaced the single cab E60's they had..some of those still run but the 6,000 is in a museum now..Texas Utilities also had one E60 for there operation but there is little info about tht unit exisits...only a few pic's here/there and thts it
@logo47 Arrow III's are not equipped with bells. As for the diesel engines, they develop wheel slip and acceleration troubles if you put too many cars on them.
Do any E60's still run? I remember them running on the Northeast Corridor, by my house years ago. I personally liked the E60. I would like to find a newer O scale model of it also. MTH had one for year 2000. Couldn't find a newer one, in good detail.
@050179mh Sorry I didn't notice your comment until now. The E60s were removed from service on NJ Transit in 1991 and on Amtrak in 2003. Several were stored on NJT property for many years after '91, however.
@yardlet6 wow i forgot i even asked that lol. Thanks for the respoinse tho. i was headed to the movies over there to watch Mayweather vs Marquez in the theaters. i ended up getting a ride over there and everything went fine. Thanks again tho.
Well for one they were very heavy (193.5 tons) and yawed especially during acceleration which places high stress on the rails. They were built for 120 mph but because of their poor testing they were limited to 90 mph. Plus they were built by GE at a time when GE's locomotives weren't all that reliable and they didn't have a long track-record of longevity (at the same time when they were building those hideous U-boats and Dash-7s).
hate to tell you , but it was the dash 7 with put GE in the number one spot in locomotive building in 1980. theyve been the number one loco builder ever since. the uboats knocked alco baldwin fairbanks morse and lima hamilton right out of buisiness. it was their reliability which took them from number six to number one 20 years after introducing the u25 in 1960.
It was actually the Dash 8 line in 1983 that put GE on top, as well as the SD50 being a bust. Ironically, the E60 and the P30CH wre both delivered in 1975, and were both mechanical nightmares!
@ma7799 sorry to disagaree with you, but i still have the issue of trains magazine which reported GE assuming the number one spot in 1980. sadly E60 and P30 didnt live up to it. and the SD50 damaged EMDs reputation, which the SD40-2 had catapulted to stellar levels.
I don't think GE's reliability on diesels had anything to do with the E60s not being able to go 120mph and most of the problems were caused the E60s trucks.
@kmothersil yeah you right about that but the strange thing about it they were still good pullers, what a waist i really do not know why would GE,would even put weak trucks on such monsters like them, cause they was heavy on the track.i miss them things.they even had some with steam generators, when they was servicing Amtrak.
The trucks the E60s had were identical to ones used on the U-boats. Particularly the U34CH NJT had. The strange thing about the E60s is that they would be the last six axle passenger engines on both Amtrak and NJT.
The horns were unique. An Amtrak manager ordered a modified version of the Nathan P5 horn. The resulting horn was designated as a P-01235. At full blast, imho, those horns were very melodic. Most of the E60s kept their P-01235s unitl their retirement, with the exception of at least 4 units that did receive K5LA horns (same type of horn used on the F40s and AEM-7s). Good news is that two E60s are being preseerved.
The E60s were hard to beat when it came to sheer tractive effort, unfortunately they were even heavier than the GG1s that they were designed to replace. They had severe pitching and yawing problems at 100mph speeds, making them rough on the track. I got to ride behind one on a 15 car Silver Meteor just before the FRA imposed the 90 mph speed restrictions on those giants. We were clocking 110 mph! Very enjoyable ride.
long wow they are huge they look like a electic engine for freight not passenger but im sure this train was made for hauling just by looking at its size
The E60C was purchased by the Black Mesa & Lake Powell to haul coal trains and the E60C-2 was purchased by Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México alhtough I'm not sure if it was for freight or passenger because the NdeM ones had double cabs and double pantographs like the Amtrak ones did.
Jesus, dude learn to spell. The E60s were a huge maintenance headache. When Amtrak had their E60s rebuild they gave 10 unrebuilt ones to New Jersey Transit for use on the North Jersey Coast Line. Meaning they no longer belonged to Amtrak.
they werent taken out because of maintenance, it was a yawing problem under acceleration. and boy do we wish we still had them. the alp's are so light and have such little tractive effort, sometimes it takes us 25 minutes to climb the grade out of morristown. slipping and slipping, even with sand applied, and it's on a distance of two miles. six axles and 200 tons could haul anything. unfortunatley, management doesnt always listn to the operating forces. the old timers wish thr E60s were here
Well, that too. I don't think the yawing problem was a huge issue on NJT because there wasn't much high-speed runnnig. I've read of some Amtrak staff complaining about the same thing. They need two HHP-8s (over 16,000 HP) to power a heavy train like the Silver Star that required just one E60 (or GG1 if you really want to be nostalgic). Were the E60s ever used on the Morristown Line? There are some videos by oaksmodelrr here on YouTube of the yawing in action.
the 44's are nice on level track, but cant pull anything up a grade. they are so light they just slip and slide. they're starting to breakdown alot as well. the 46's are wonderufl. powerfull, fast, i havent had one break on my yet. theyre a bit heavier than the 44s so they can climb up the grade better on the morristown and montclair lines. love the german engineering! db
yeah right about that my friend.surely correct. but i never really knew about them looking like the ones on the U-boats,i am gonna check that out i forgot them U-boats.
