  • I've never seen anyone play the harp in my life. This is really beautiful.

  • <3

  • Wonderfulest human alive.

  • Joanna Newsom and Bjork, best female singers ever

  • This is amazing.........

  • ....................

  • I'll spout your fucking bean m8!!!!1!!1!1 Lulz

  • She's just plain gorgeous, and she has a voice that no one can imitate! Plus the fact that she plays harp, piano, and writes her songs. That girl has talent, and she inspires thousands!

  • I always wonder if the other songs were filmed too... This was such a nice performance. Plus, this one in particular is almost flawless, don't know why some of you guys say she makes lots of mistakes, cause she does not

  • @underlinedluke she does make mistakes, but it's still beautiful I agree. You watch a musical performance to see something meaningful in a persons spirit and hear something that moves you, and I think you see both of these things in this particular performance, even though she made mistakes.

  • I love her smile at the end. It says, "success..."

  • i think she is beautiful and i love her voice!

  • 7 people haven't seen The Strangers ;)

  • she looks so weird

  • @nicanon01 well you look weird and you're no where near as talented...

  • @nicanon01 Fuck off, she's beautiful. Listen.

  • just .. yes.

  • I love this video because she makes so many mistakes but never flinches over them. At the beginning I can hear her nerves in every note she plays. She centers herself eventually and by the end she shreds. Am I the only one who feels like there's much to be learned from this performance?

  • Wow. I have never heard a more unique voice in my life, it's so refreshing and beautiful to listen to!

  • @MsAbigail1995 have you listened to CocoRosie....Bianca has a similar type of sound in her voice..and CocoRosie have so much imagination..they use childrens toys...one sister sings opera and plays the harp the other does most of the lyrical...they are AMAZING too.

  • What is all this chat about a shit voice?

It's as unique as you get, and it is exactly what she is going for. The way she shapes her mouth and pulls faces just to get the right sounds out is sublime. A true artist.

  • i watched this video and as soon as it ended i was wearing skinny jeans, a plaid shirt, glasses and a small hat.

  • I fucking love joanna newsom.

  • strong fingers, interesting mind

  • when I watch her perform, it's like watching a river flow .... she's a natural phenomenon that totally resists being dissected and analyzed .... but, like a river flowing, it's just a beautiful thing.

  • this is like my new favourite song

  • Damn, that harp has some serious BASS.

  • Joanna! Not Joanne...

  • Some of the best singers have the worst voices. Dylan, Prine, DeMent, Cash, etc. Acquired tastes, but once you learn to like it you never want to live without it.

  • Man. Some of my friends are hipsters (insofar as that word has any meaning nowadays) and they always told me about her like she's the second coming of christ. On that basis alone I refused to listen to her music for a long time. But seeing her sitting at this big, unwieldy thing so concentrated on not making any mistakes and churning out these beautiful harmonies has made me change my opinion on her. Lesson of the story? Don't judge artists by their fanbase.

  • She's like a little pixie. I want her

  • I, too, am big-boned and fey.

  • love her voice...could put me right to sleep everynight...so is she like, the greatest harpist? i dont know much about the harp game..

  • @samuelsons01

doesn't matter about the harp game, joanna's newsoms the greatest harpist to me!

  • @kindofmagicmike and me :)

  • incredible

  • I actually wish I was able to see the World through her eyes. must be a beautiful one

  • i love her harp playing! but im not mad on her voice

  • @xcottenheadedninnyx

She sounds very different now. You need to do a YouTube search for 'Go Long' in Tel Aviv. Her voice is unbelievable on that.

  • @xcottenheadedninnyx either was i, to be honest, but after a while, it sort of becomes... i don't really know how to describe. i like it now, anyway!

  • OMFG so adorable when she slurs her r's. "and you can ask the counselwuh, and you can ask thing king"

  • People have to see another song of hers called "81". It amazing as good if not better then this one.

  • Comment removed

  • She seemed unsure at first or something but then she looked more and more caught up by it, if i could play/sing like that i would be in awe at myself for the beauty of it... i would play all day long

  • I went to art central last year, and there was a harpist. I brought up Joanna Newsom and he played this song personally for me. Love. LOVE.

I'm learning the harp because of this angel

  • this song hits me right here <3

  • I love lovelovelovelove love this.

  • 5 people haven't seen The Strangers.

  • **(((I LOVE THIS WOMAN'S VOICE. IT TAKES ME OFF N2 A DIFFERENT WORLD. ITS LIKE NOTHING ELSE IN THIS WORLD. A PURE INNOCENSE THATS NOT CORRUPTED BY THIS CRUEL WORLD. IT BREAKS MY HEART EVERYTIME 2 HEAR PPL TALK DOWN UPON THIS WOMAN FROM VOICE 2 LOOKS BCUZ 2 ME IT DOESNT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS WOMAN RIGHT HERE. NATURAL BEAUTY+ANGELLIC VOICE+ MUSICAL TALENT=GENIUS. I'M A 26 YEAR OLD BLACK MALE WHO JAMS TO RAP AND RnB BUT WHEN I SAW HER PERFORM, I WAS CAPTURED, COLD, AND STILL FROM AMAZEMENT)))**

  • @tylarenz I don't know why, but I find your comment to be compelling. I almost cried, a little. :') It takes a strong man to say such things, because I too, am a young black man that loves, and appreciates Joanna Newsom. Forget what the haters have to say.

  • @erikisPSYCHO yeah any1 who can catch my attention and make me listen to them, i have no choice but to give her props where its due!!! yeah, its not thats shes just different. the woman has a beautiful voice and her words and music mix 2gether creating magic almost...

  • Uh... yea... angels are real

  • I LOVE how she sings "and I railed!"

  • shes great at playing the harp but hher voice throws it off :/

  • beautiful, mesmerizing

  • I cant get over how much different she looks. I can't tell why though.

It's obviously not something drastic like plastic surgery or anything crazy like that. Her face looks much thinner now or something. But it doesn't look like she lost any weight or anything though. Hair is different. That can't be the same thing.

    Check out this and v=3XMJl-HCO7A

"Joanna Newsom - Jackrabbits (Live on Later with Jools Holland)"

  • So beautiful. I'm blown away.

  • I don't get it. I see all these comments on Joanna's videos saying "Well its not about her having a good voice, its about the emotion/lyrics etc", but I think she has a beautiful voice.

  • this was in The Strangers I knew she sounded familiar when I heard her song on that commercial

  • @Grado2003 im 12 years old

  • I may just be in love with you Ms. Newsom

  • How is it possible to think bad of Joanna of her mistakes when you think about it. Have you ever heard a classical concert pianist sing in one of their performances of hard piano pieces. Joanna sings and plays the harp at the same time and then it's hard both to control voice, lyrics, tempo and harp notes at the same time. She is indeed amazing!

  • so good...

  • her reaction at 1:28 is just perfect

  • @whichtitch Spelt is an ancient grain that traces its heritage back long before many wheat hybrids.

  • @hlrose50 i love how the top comment is about grains.

  • @whichtitch

At least he didn't spell "Newsome" at any point.

  • Shes the most magical thing

  • I miss her backwoods granny, mean old cat lady voice and nursery rhyme like lyrics. I thought it was all so charming and antiquated yet bold, dreamlike and wild, daring even. With that rough, thorny hardscrabble untrained voice that was somehow comforting and sweet. This is definitely my favorite version of the song. Raw, unihibited, uncluttered, no symphonies, or orchestras. Just Ms. Newsom and that sweet sweet harp playing and singing the way I wish she still would.

  • Comment removed

  • Newsom forever!!!

  • Every one of her performances is different. Some I like more than others, but all of them are mesmerizing.

  • The conviction on this version is insane. It goes so much further than making mistakes, this is an artistic statement. It goes beyond its construction.

  • She is so unbelievably beautiful. dangit

  • this song sounds like a nursery rhyme, it makes me feel like a little kid again.

  • Saw her a month or two ago in a school auditorium, absolutely incredible voice.

  • I would love yo hear this song with her ''new voice''

    *.*

  • CLEARLY GODS MUSIC...

  • she is my idea of perfection...

  • @bmargarete totally agree!

  • @bmargarete me too

  • The word mistake is meaningless. it can only exist if there is a perfect version which there isn't. Every time she plays the song it will be different - very slightly or quite noticeably. Changes are not mistakes, just variations.

  • well, i guess i never knew that such a thing could sound so utterly beautiful.

  • absolutely adorable.

  • 1:03 - the line (in this particular version) "the sprout and the be-ean" always reminds of how i fell in love with her whenever i hear it. plus, i cannot see those many mistakes you're bitching about, maybe you just dont know the song too well i guess.

  • ouch--many mistakes here. I wonder if this is just a bad day--reminds you how hard it must be to play these things.

  • @jrobertwood Damn people, don't give comments a thumbs down just cause you love her. I love her too, but there were a lot of mistakes here. Maybe she was nervous; maybe it was an off day. Touchy touchy.

  • This video is from a live radio performance. Yes there are mistakes. So what? People get nervous, they make mistakes. Those imperfections are part of what makes live music so interesting. If you want sterile perfection buy a studio recording.

  • @hlrose50 well said! people are too used to cd quality finished articles.

just shows the best musicians make mistakes, it's human.

    Long live live music!

  • @HangWire2 THANK YOU! People, keep in mind that she was alot younger in this video. This was almost 6 six years ago. Right after her first big album release. You would be nervous too, yall! lol

  • @HangWire2 They're not mistakes it's unintentional improvisation.

  • Naah shes just playing it slower than she usually does

  • gosh would you just look at her hands

  • I have gotta see her perform live! I get lost in the harp and her voice is quite enchanting. *sigh* I wish I my friends liked her music.

  • You got it sibling! I become disillusioned when my acquaintances ask why her voice is so "childish". Once, one of my teachers laughed out loud within the first two seconds of seconds of "Sadie".

  • metoo! they think her voice sounds like... i wont even say. its mean. i feel like the only person who listens to her music.. and loves it.

  • me too

  • you're not...

  • :c I wanna play harp now, haha, and really, I loooove her voice o: It's so unique! Tired of hearing monotony! She brings life into what she sings!

  • so if the black strings are 'C' strings, that would mean all the strings between are in the scale, since there are only 7 from black string to black string. i understand that the pedals control what key the harp is in. on Ys she modulates from key to key a lot, so that's a lot of pedal work. would this be right?

  • this is the perfect version of the song.

  • I agree 1000%

  • 4:04 She Shreds

  • i slept as though dead....

  • this is music

  • I could listen to that harp playing all day.

  • haha 1.28 aww got her finger caught on that C string there.

aww we all make mistakes there.

  • yeah cause music is all about the faces one makes whilst performing it

  • what witch do you know to compare this?

  • I'm pretty sure her singing isn't as well as in the album because here she's doing 2 different things at once while in the album she does the harp recording first and then does the singing afterward.

  • so awesome to watch her play...such a talented musician.

  • she is as punk as it gets from my perspective...shes like a landscape...i love her

  • Whoops, I meant I'm the old punk rocker ...not her. Sorry.

  • Wow! Yes her voice is unique, much like many others who've forged new ways, she's playing a freakin' harp! And it's wonderful! On top of that her lyrics and vocal are all her own (which makes an ex-punk rocker gone old like her that much more). Relaxing. After a long day, I love to listen to her.

  • Its so gracefull to watch her play.

  • ROOOOTS !

  • <3 joanna

  • can tell the harp has bunged up on her in beginning so its made her lil frazzled:( still she did SO wonderful as always x x x

  • chill out.. its just someone's music

  • this is what attracts me the most about her...lol

its *artists* who r trained or moulded n fit into the media/ societies puzzlelike boxes of whatever its supposed to be ...that make me yawn! but meh..more room for the ones with this kind of taste to marvel...quote*Mainly a celebration of music expressing the whole spectrum of human emotion*unquote...now THAT hipocracy is sad.

    sorry.

  • WHo do you consider a good singer?

SHe's a freaking MUSICIAN, not some polished pop tart puppet. Give me a one DIY Joanna Newsom over a dozen big label, flashy American I-dull Karaoke whores any day of the week.

  • Incidentally her singing has smoothed out significantly since this was taped. Check out recent vids of her performing "Colleen".

  • You mentioned the word "freak". . .

  • Actually, I do love her voice for its sweetness. She supposedly doesnt like when people call her voice childlike, but that's one of the reasons I love it. It's just original--so unlike the crap on mtv and the like.

But i can understand why you and others wouldn't like it. It takes time to get used to. And if not, then it's a love/hate thing.

  • You don't get it. It's not about singing, it's about emotion. I don't give a shit about professionally trained singers, because after a while, it looses it's meaning. I love Amanda Palmer, I love Melora Creager, and I love Joanna Newsom. Some people will get them, and some people won't.

  • you just named 3 of my most favorite artists.

  • Oh, god. I wrote "Looses" and I feel like an idiot. I'm sorry. Loses. Loses, god damn it!

  • @smellslikechildren1 You can have both.

  • @smellslikechildren1 Can someone disagree with you without being accused of "not getting it," Mr. Obama?

  • @smellslikechildren1 I get what she's doing .She's just bad at it.And the soul isn't there and she's faking it.Theres no real emotion there.

  • @smellslikechildren1 I totally get it

  • She seems to be a bit uncomfortable anyway the song is awesome one of the best recordings I have found.

  • Had to come back for a refill.

    *sighs

Incredible. Her vibrations make my skeleton feel like it's made of straw.

  • BRAVO! I felt it inside.

  • i love singers like Joanna. nice, fresh & fragile. none of this commercial bull crap where you find a sound & repeat it over and over while your stripping away your s&n outfit singing about how you loved someone (if their capable of it) but that love was void so you resort to being a ho. sorry guys, bad temper.

  • wow. this is soooooooooooooooo old! she looks so young and nervvous here!

  • Nice Video !

  • wow, we never really get to see her from this side of the harp...i rather like watching her through the strings:D

  • Tolle Harfinistin, gefühlvoll und eigenwillig.
