Why exactly is America the only western country where there are so few atheists and so many fundamentalist Christians? I never understood that. In Ireland where I live, about 1-3 in every ten people are atheist/agnostic or just don't give a shit and most the rest are Catholic, but most of them don't really take it seriously and rarely go to mass.

Makes me think at times that I should never reveal my secular views to anyone and just refuse to talk about religion or lack of it at all. I have ostricized people. Even the ones who don't take Christianity seriously, Atheism makes them uncomfortable. It comforting for people to think that there's something after bodily death and that if this life doesn't go well, there's a better one (possibly) waiting. My friend hates people who believe in God, thinks they should all die. I'm not religious at all but I grew up around christian schools because they were the best around and those people were the kindest, funniest, nicest and moral people I have ever met.

Militant atheist views? how about the oppression that religion has been bringing down on people for the last several thousand years, or as those idiots out there might believe the entire existence of our planet. there is nothing Militant about not wanting to see "in god we trust" on a bill, why should i have to be constantly reminded of religion if i don't believe in it! it is no longer a view that everyone shares!

@TheTycarroll Are you sure it's Religion that has done these things or rather ignorant people who do not listen to the true word of God? This country was founded by Religious people, you should respect this just as Religious people respect your views. There are some who will put you down, but are there not others who share your belief that would put me down? We are all brothers & sisters. yes i am sure its religion you nut job that is the point! it is a small number of ignorant people who have kept the remainder of the population in the dark for thousands of years in the name of religion. if you want to believe in god that is fine there is nothing wrong with that but it is when you turn that into a religion and begin preaching it upon others and using fear to convince them of something that i have a problem with!
