I think that's a little cheep. It has an LED sensor to detect the trail... It has a resemblense to the vectron wave= LED light

Just a normal black tape. An alternative would be to print the track.

We were only using original NXT parts - however this is not the fastest run, please check video titled '14.7s record' where we managed to cut almost 5 sec by adding gears, tweaking speeds and moving light sensors further away.
